No, I'm not talking about limp-wristed people (I do know how to spell).
I'm talking about "Fuck All Gear, All The Time". Well... maybe only Most of the time, for all I know.
There's a guy who lives somewhere in or near Birkenhead, who I've spotted several times, riding a Triumph Rocket III. Each time he's been wearing the following:
An open-faced helmet.
A nylon "Fox" jacket or vest (the latter, I think, from memory).
Shorts.
Sports shoes.
Underwear and socks. (I guess).

Yeah it's his business, but it... just... sorta bothers me.
We're talking here about Serious Motorcycle Iron, ridden in a very casual way. It keeps niggling at me, in a way that someone dressed Eggs Zachary the same but riding a Dog 50 scooter wouldn't cause more than a slight "Tsk" or shake of the head.

I agree with you completely, you should be kitted up as best you can all the time. But I have encountered some people who reckon that a helmet is the single most important thing to wear, everything else is subjective, can't say I agree with that though.

Simple solution, worry about number 1. Stop concerning yourself with others wellbeing. Everyone has a choice. Everyone knows what happens when you slide along the ground at pace on your skin.

I'm pro-choice. Some lessons are harder than others, but still have to be learnt. Most people only learn by doing.

Whilst visiting the Gold Coast a few weeks ago both I and the other half were amazed at the lack of gear worn by the majority of riders we saw.
We visited many bike stores while we were there and saw three people taking large bikes out for test rides wearing sneakers, shorts, t-shirt and a helmet, stunned!! Also heard on the radio that they are considering reviewing some motorcycle laws there at the moment regarding limiting the CC rating of bikes that learners can ride and their ability to carry pillions, so immediately the thought of people with fresh new learner licences riding 1000CC bikes with a pillion on board and not wearing any gear aside from a helmet scared the crap out of me!
Live and let live, sure, but god, have a little thought for your skin!:(

i frequently ride in as little gear as possible. i wont ride in shorts if i can at all avoid it [last time was going to the doc for a knee problem and i wasnt interested in dropping my dacks] simply cos im not interested in turning my legs into a roast.

i got hit years ago wearing jeans and a singlet. my legs are fucked [as are the jeans] but my unprotected upper body came away with a tiny knick on the thumb. i now think that if id been naked i would have bounced.

id be more worried about the dick weed quad riding farmers who dont wear helmets. dont forget, they get lumped in with us and are one of the main reasons our acc is as high as it is.

You might get all enraged and upset about seeing people riding around without all the protective clothing on, but why let it personally upset you? Those people (unless somehow quite retarded) know the risks, but choose to do it anyway.

Even if you stopped them and had a rant at them about how stupid it is, it wont make much difference, and they probably would tell you to mind your own business but probably with a few choice swear words. Personal choice it is. Ive had the long talks with people who choose to wear what I would consider hardly protective gear, but in the end its their decision, just have to live with it.

I'm with Viff on this one. I gave a dumbass on a GN250 a bollicking the other day for riding in Jandals, shorts, open face lid that looked to date from the 1780's... And worst of all, a t-shirt with a nice flower on it, but without swear words. I mean, he's a biker right?? What's offensive about a nice t-shirt with a flower?

So because you are a biker and he is a biker you think you have the right to bollick him? If you did that to me I would tell you to get fucked. Would love to see you go up to a Hells Angel or someone of a big persuasion and give them a bollicking about their lack of gear.

This bloke wasn't just riding to the shop - he was communtering to work, and on his way to the D'Auckland CBD. That means he was participating in The Wacky Races. He was obviously not au fait with the rules (unless he was a last-minute novelty entry.

I agree. I'd actually hate to see mandation (yeah, ferktifiknow if it's a word either) - it leads to giving the Faceless Grey-faced Grey-suited Bureaucrats more power. Fukkim I say.

That sounds more like a problem with the system, than a problem with freedom of choice. Simple if it bothers you that much, then campaign for ACC to only cover riders wearing full protection. But don't make it illegal to not wear full gear. I like to pick and choose my moments of weakness, and ride accordingly.

Riding my 675 - full gear. Riding my wifes scooter - a lot less - open face helmet, work clothes, shoes and a casual leather jacket. It's not all one-sided. Sitting up right on a scooter with an open faced helmet, I can see a lot more than crouched over on the Daytona with a full face helmet.

If I come off on the road, yep I'll possibly get hurt more, but then cycling to work in lycra with a helmet than is more holes than it is helmet, I'm a lot more exposed and am travelling at aound 30-35ks on the flat and 50ks down hill, so not too different to the scooter commute.

ACC component of my Bike or scooter $166.50. ACC charge for sitting at a desk typing on a computer for a year - around $1,800. Where's the risk and who's paying for who here.

If we make ACC only for ATGATT riders, does that mean the health system would only be for skinny blokes that exercise and don't smoke?

Nope, he's had a long recovery, and is able to walk again with a stick, but I don't know if he'll ride again. He's got a 350Z that hes probably going to modify and get to the track. Haven't seen him since last year when he was in hospital, only been in touch by email, and he doesn't give away much. I'll get more out of him when I see him within the next month.

I had my own life problems (woman and life's expectations) and had to get away for a bit. But I'm better and coming back.

When I see someone with a pudding basin helmet, t-shirt, shorts, whatever, I immediately think "Man you look cool, James Dean stylin' and you're in control of your ride and that's a great look"

Sorry, I meant to say "You're a poseur and a fool to yourself and the people who love you and depend on you" and if it goes bad for you on the road it's going to go really fucking bad.

And when I see a rider with all the gear I know he gives proper thought to his riding and his safety. Respect. Why give the bloody cagers the percentage over you. They've got it all over us already so why make it easier for them to kill you?

So when you have your tennis gear on, or whatever, and a guy goes past you the other way with all the gear he will see you but he will also think you are:

1. A noob
2. Dangerous to himself
3. Immature in his riding behaviour.

And all that crap about rules for group riding a few days ago. "When your wingman goes to overtake you must go with him," even though you can't see where he's leading you or what shit-storm is going to come down on your head in the next half second due to his incompetence and bullshit, macho, stick with the group attitude.

The day I follow someone, the day I trust their judgement over my own, is the day I give the game away.

But in their defence, they warm up before playing, undergo training and conditioning- heck some are even wearing padding and head protection and they don't have to by law.
We are talking about the lowest common denominator in Darwinism here.

Mate i know what you mean i cant get it, why do they risk it even more by riding like that. But i take it like this, they have been educated on all the different things that could happen to them plus more without the proper gear so i look at it like this i like my life and skin and they must just not care. I dress properly even for a ride to the shops (learn't the hard way) O yes and i've seen that guy before.
Peace out
