View Full Version : Knee protector recommendation

Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for knee protectors? I was advised to stay away from the Fox ones with the moveable joints due to them breaking easily.

Has anyone tried the Alpine stars or Thors (both with the moveable joints)?

Cheers.

There is a few threads here on this topic do a search!
But after some of the guys discussing this, I got these! Not a knee full knee brace (and not marketed as such) but not to far off. Much more support than a standard knee guard and a pair for $140 instead of up to $500 per knee!
They are bloody good!

Bought them from Scott411 here http://www.mrmotorcycles.co.nz/product_info.php?cPath=47_37&products_id=714

Cheers - yeah I had a quick look on a few pages for threads but couldnt find any.

Sweet, yeah those were the ones I was looking at. So now problems with the strength of the joints?

Haven't had them that long but they seem solid enough. Joints are plastic but seem ok! Others here have had them longer and they will probably testify better to their quality.

They look like they last, skip on Alpinestars or Fox ones, been there didn't last, got some sixsixone ones very similar to the Thor's which are good.

ive got the alpinestars knee protectors. best investment on gear for me so far. slammed into a tree in woodhill, knee in between bike and a solid tree root. my knee would have been smashed if it werent for them so alpinstars gets the thums up from me, and they wont break the bank.$

true, I had a similar experience with a large stump at woodhill on sunday too. Borrowed my mates boots which are reasonably good (I was just using shitty road boots prior) and top of my right foot hit the stump. Would have shattered my foot for sure if I didnt borrow his boots....I will look into them.

Cheers.

I like my Thor ones.
Even more now since I found THOR is "Torsten Hallman Original Racewear".

I asked the same query a few months back, went to multiple shops and ended up buying Thor Force Knee Guards, took a couple of rides to get used to and had some chaffing the first few outings, but I should be standing anyway. All good once you're used to them. $140 MMcycles.
NB: Almost wont fit under standard pants, I had to buy some loose it ones but was due for some anyway....cheers

I bought the Fox Raptors, and immediately found out the little hinge grommet/keeper clips kept popping off (as alluded to above). Not from falling off the bike, mind you - just kneeling on the ground next to the bike. Took them back to shop. 'Solution' to the problem was to keep sending the complete knee guards back to wholesaler to re-fit new clips and return them with exactly the same problem! (Insert appropriate expletive here)

Fox-Fix: For others in the same boat wanting a sane and simple cure - I slowly backed away from the shop counter, went home and put some Araldite into the overly flexy slot at end of hinge-pins. No problems at all since. Presumably Fox is still cranking these flawed hinge pins out and inflicting them on the dirt-riding populace all around the world. Rest of knee guard design is excellent, and it would be a very simple matter to alter the existing hinge die slightly. (Used to work as a toolmaker on plastic injection moulds so have a rough idea on this)

Sweet - yeah thats what happened to my mate when she used them. I have the same design for elbows which are sweet as. Salesman and colemans suzuki asvised against them.

I'll go with the Thor ones as I dont want them to brake just before I go for a ride. Due to the fact that if it happens luck will have it that my knee that is wearing the broken guard will probaly hit a tree or stump (if I bail) at some mega speed...

Thanks again for all your info/help.

Cheers - BC.:2guns::clap::woohoo:

Same thing happened to me, nice fix BTW because other than that they were ok, certainly a nicer fit that the Alpinestar Bionics, the Bionics plastics didn't like me falling off ( frequently ) & cracked both knees by the time they got retired.

currently using Alpinestars knee protectors but having an ACL injury am stepping into a pair of CTI knee brace's. Meant to be the best for the type of injury I have. Mind you the Vapour are $750 each, customs are $1500 each.
