It amazes me that all the Motorcycle and car companies are giving in to tougher emmision regulations to make our machines run leaner and more restrictive.....
BUT F**ken Diesel trucks and 4WD's are allowed to pump out as much black shit as they like.
I try not to be stuck behind one of these enviormental killers for very long.
I've herd of a phone service where you grass in a smokey car, but is there a "Dobb in a Diesel" line?

I have heard they will, but will be interested if anyone could confirm? If so it will be one hell of an expensive COF bill for the trucking companies

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the emmissions from a diesel engine were actually safer for the enviroment. Just you can see them, so people assume they're dirtier. Or is this an urban legend?

I always thought the same, the smoke you see from diesel vehicles is unburnt carbon. The invisible smoke from petrol engines can contain sulfur and nitrogen oxides (and other nastys), which can react with water to form acids, which is bad

That's right,the black smoke is just plain carbon,all diesels do it,it's part of how they run,excess black smoke is a sign of problems,but black smoke under load is fairly normal.I think the whole ''dob in a smokey'' was based around smokey diesels,but the results of the survey are applied to petrol vehicles - good one eh?

Anyone who's worked around diesels will know that on a cold start they put out some white smoke,and it stings the eyes - I think that is sulphur combining with water to make sulphuric acid,hence the stinging eyes.

The hydrocarbon chain in diesel is fairly long,so under load with a lot of fuel around there isn't much time to complete the combustion process - so first the oxy atoms strip the hydrogens from the chain,this is easy,leaving the harder to bond carbon atoms for later,these go out the pipe as black smoke.

Fear not - I picked up a set of recon injectors for the Pajero today,this should cut my smoke by 0.5%.

I heard that our diesel is much less refined than that used in, say the USA. Tighter controls are more difficult to inflict upon industry than the average Joe.

Thats all nice an shit, but I'd still prefer not to inhale it... why dont all trucks and busses have zorsts that point up... pointing to the other side of the road or out the back is just plain nasty... kids in cars with windows down have to breathe this shit too... wrong, I tells ya, just wrong..... :done:

I also think any finger pointing argument by one fuel burner over another is a pretty self serving argument in todays world.

It smokes HEAPS when it's serviced cos they fill the filter with cleaner. I've been dobbed once for that. Guess what? No right of reply. You cannot give a reason. You are guilty. Strike one. Get three and you're policed.

Does it normally smoke under full throttle? if so, you can adjust the amount of fuel being injected into the cylinder with a simple screw.

The hardest part is finding the screw isn't it always???
