Having recently succumbed to buying a pair (for local short trips only), and being a firm practitioner of ATGATT, I am trying hard to convince myself that they might just sort of qualify as 'proper gear' in the very broadest of senses. just to make me feel better.
what do you think?

it is better than wearing normal jeans, you are wearing bike gear, mind you the smallest of falls can have bad injuries, I know someone who fell off a stationary bike and shattered their knee cap.
ATGATT - all the girls all the time?

If your not happy with them, then your not happy. Last thing you need to be doing is worrying about your legs when you should be concentrating on riding, or day dreaming about more interesting topics.
It matters not what anyone else thinks of them.

Hell, I ride in normal jeans all the time, but I'm buying some Draggin's so I'll be feeling like I'm better off straight away, don't expect them to put up a personal force field there only armoured jeans. If your so worried why are you taking a risk riding at all. Get some leathers....:Punk:

I've thought about them for Summer commuting ... still not sure though. As someone else has said ... they will only help prevent road rash .... and nothing more. I think they are marginally better than normal Levi's ..... that I used to crash in when I was young.
For me it feels a bit more secure having even Cordura trou with knee armour and hip padding.
I now firmly believe leather is the real deal though .... :doctor:

A bit of mx armour underneath (knee brace type thingies) would make them better I'd imagine.... but I still wouldn't wear them while riding on the road.

Yep the Knox armour improves them but they're still jeans. Good compromise for commuting at slower speeds in summer (for me anyway) but no way in hell would I ride on the open road with them - armour or not.

I have Draggins for summer commuting and I'm also in two minds about them.
Mind One says, "They're only fabric, they definitely aren't going to protect you as well as 'proper' bike trou, you're taking quite a risk!"
Mind Two says, "One of the biggest risks in summer commuting is getting overheated in your overdone armoured cordura trou. You will actually be safer wearing draggins and feeling more comfortable, so you can concentrate on your riding."
Mind Three says, "Lay off the arguing you two, I'm trying to sleep."

I've got shift (same as draggin) jeans for dry days and cordura for wet.
Jeans to be cool (temperature) cordura to be dry.
Neither have armour to speak of so wont help the impact but will prevent the gravel rash.
If the intention is more than commuting :nono: go for armoured leather.

I'm planning to get a set in a couple of days because if I get stuck in traffic on a summers day my leathers start to FRY. :weep:
The jeans are only recommended for around town use anyway and thats the only place I'd ever wear them. If was going out of town or anything faster than sub 50km/hr I'd wear my leathers for sure. I'm also getting armour put into mine.

Them puppies are useless dude. They'll give you:
No protection from Road Rash
Pammy Rash
Yeah - I'd see about a penicillan shot quick smart if I were you - then bleach the jeans, burn them and dissolve what's left in battery acid.

Cheap insurance is to wear MX knee protectors. You can spend anywhere from $30 to $200 and way more, but even the cheapies are better than nothing. I had a mate who binned on a tight curve - he had regular jeans with cheap knee protectors underneath, and one knee had the fabric torn off after the (50 kph slide out) accident so we think it would have been a trip to the hospital if he did not have the knee protectors. On one group ride one of the guys wondered how good my $35 knee protectors were so I picked up a big rock and slammed it into my knee cap then asked if I could do the same to him... point taken. :shifty:

I ride with my draggins all the time lol :)
(well almost all the time, sometimes wear spool pants depending on what im doing, where im going etc) When I binned, im glad I was in my spool pants cuz ended up with bike on top of me leg pinned beneath, if was in draggins, it prob would've been worse than a nice big bruise on the knee from the bike :)
Summer however, for comfort etc, will be draggins ftw :)

Is that armour that you attach to yourself ... like skaters or bmx riders use ... that sort of thing, or can you slot some armour into pockets inside the jeans ?

what the hell do either of those mean?
Yeah im planning on getting me some, as riding in town to work everyday, so want some form of protection while not looking like total noob at work. But will definitely not be wearing them outside of town streets. They are better than the normal jeans i wear to work at the moment! :(

Attach to your legs under the jeans. I have both options but don't like the ones that fit into the jeans as they feel like they'd slip to the side if I was sliding along the road. The MX style ones will stick to your legs and have better side protection as well.

ATGATT is a religion and its followers are devotees. They wear braces AND a belt, fluoro vests and coccyx armour.
It is entirely possible to protect oneself without being obsessive about it. In this context Draggin jeans are an appropriate addition to one's wardrobe of riding garb.
The ground is hard, people. There is no apparel available that will negate the effect of sudden impact, including fluoro vests.

I wear Quasi sliders with MX pads underneath, I deem this appropriate for my style of riding (super-nana).

....I do actually own a set of Quasi leathers, and a set of armoured cordura...these are just to make the 6km occasional commute to work/pub/shop/ a bit more bearable.
any real ride and I'm in the other stuff....

It's your skin and bones so only you can make the call. It's a risk I personally think is worth while.

Having had a 50-60k/hr slide on the chipseal in my Levis and suffered only minimal roadrash on my knees under my jeans, the jeans had no damage whatsover needing only a wash to get some blood and skin off. Still wear the same ones with some light knee armour underneath.

In the Draggin publicity they show someone being dragged along the road behind a vehicle, with the only protection being his Draggin jeans. I'm not game to try it myself, but I would be even less likely to try it in standard Levis.

Draggin's are great for commuting particularly here around AKL where typically you ride to work, home mates place, pub, cafe etc which is usually only 20-30 mins anywhere and at least in the Draggin's you look casual enough to go to a variety of places, rather than wearing leathers.
They are a lot warmer than normal jeans too. Sure they wont protect you from impact but they wont shred into you like normal jeans would and where at the hospital they literally use a wire brush to scrub out the shredded jean from the wound.

I got 'dragged' down the road under a 265kg bike in Levis...smashed my femur in 3 places but the jeans were intact...!!!
I don't recommend it!

bones heal mate, skin doesnt grow back very well. Draggins are a very good addition to your riding kit, and they are about all I wear whilst around town. (plus jacket and lid, of course)
I've binned in draggins before, sure i broke 10 bones, but meh, my skin was fine and the bones healed with time :)
