DAMMITALLTOHELLINAHANDBASKETANDBACKAGAIN!

I might take up duck shooting.

Binned it this arvo on a sweeper, cos of a DUCK.

OK, so what happenned is that as I was scraping the peg at about 80k on a nice right hand sweeper on the open road out towards Clevedon, a freakin' duck comes from the right and flies right into the road in front of me, with the result that my front wheel goes over him. Now hitting the equivalent of an unexpected speed bump at that particular moment was NOT good.....the front came up then bounced back down causing a big slapper and then down i went on the right hand side and slid to the outside of the corner, coming to a rest in some gravel.

:argh: FUKKIT. :angry2:

First thing to do is check that all the major structural bits are intact - arms, brakes, legs, handlebars, head, gearshift and rear brake....... actually I lie - the FIRST thing i did on instinct was look what was behind me....I really DON'T need to survive a bin just to be taken out by a following truck!

So anyway....the beast was rideable but looks shite....so tomorrow off I go to get an assesment....sigh. Anyone happen to have or know of anyone with a set of red ZZR fairings for sale......?

Flaming hell.... are you sure that YOU are ok...?

One assumes that the said duck is now dead?

Try ringing Atomic on the North Shore.... they may have some fairings.

Yeah I'm fine (thanks!) - I'm glad I force myself to wear the gear though - on the next real hot day when I'm heading out I won't even think twice about pants, jacket, gloves and boots. Oh and my helmet has an awesome set of grind marks where i slid for a bit.....so that goes in the bin as soon as insurance has looked at it (i think it's covered under my insurance).

The duck? well i found some of him....a wing to be precise. he was a big bastard....like hitting a sack of sand!

Anyway, I'm sure it doesn't need to be said but I know people who have come off far worse and if all it costs me is (gulp) some $$$$ then i got off lightly. The only thing that makes me feel a bit better about the whole situation is that it wasn't rider stupidity that did it! :niceone:

Bugger. Shame it caused you to bin it!
I hit a pukeko once, on the road to Marakopa - it went across my headlight, bent right hand indicator back 90 degrees, hit my knee, then cartwheeled ingloriously down the tarmac before finally sitting flapping in the middle of the road. When I went back to finish it off, the bugger got up and ran off into the bushes!!
Then a mate of mine hit a turkey near Hahei... looked like the world's biggest pillow fight! Fortunately he kept it upright as well.

man that sucks.
I remember one day a segull hit me square on the noggin at 120, just about knocked me off the bike - i have no idea why i didnt crash, pure luck.
keep your eyes open, mate of mine sold his zzr4 for about $500 about 6 months ago, so there are cheap ones out there.

Dude,

What a quack-up. The odds on actually running over a low flying duck (assuming he's going at about 20-30km/h) with a 150mm wheel must be just out of this world. Buy a Lotto ticket now!!!

Way back when, the family was driving along the Hauraki plains at night headed towards Paeroa in the clunky Morrie 1100 when we hit a duck. No light to clean it up so we drove to a gas station at Paeroa by which time half it had cooked on the block!! Nicely sliced after going through the grill/radiator vane combo too.

He just ddn't want to live without her.

thing is, did the duck learn a lesson from this? Is it doing to do it again...??? Lets hope not.
Shame on the bin too. That sux big time. Least the bike slid instead of highsiding and going over and over..

On a related note, a lot of us seem to be binning (k, not always human error, like this..) but can we be more careful, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease? Just hate thinking that I'm next for one, or the next one is worse.. keep it real

Hey all - thanks for the sympathy and concern aye, I'm glad I found this wee community!

I'm definitly fine, no pain no sore neck or anything (i've had the delayed whiplash before from being rear-ended so yeah I know not to be macho about it!)

Plus there was no real impact to me, just lots of sliding and the gear took care of that (thankfully). Recalling the recent discussions on gloves and gear....jeezus anyone who wants to be convinced of the value of proper gear i will tell you all about it until you're sold! :)

I was kinda feeling bad and stupid for binning it yesterday but i spose it wasn't *really* my fault....hope insurance agrees if I decide to claim!

I was actually thinking along the same lines Krayy - what the fuk are the chances???? Then again, life is all chance, you can't get too much into the "what if I had left 5 mins later, what if I'd gone 5 k's faster or slower...."

I start thinking like that sometimes, but it'll drive ya nuts!

This morning sucked...nice sunny morning and I'm caging my way to work....lane splitting is much harder in the Legnum!

Hey sorry to hear about your 'mallard'ramatic bin! Damm kamikazi duck. Was shitey bad luck, but glad to know you are ok and bike repairable.

My partner got taken out by a duck in the chest. Sent him flying off his bike and where he landed badly winded. He was checking himself over for damage and looked over to see the duck doing the same! It gave him a quack as if to say 'fucking look where you're going next time' and flew off rather unsteadily. He ended up having to push his bent bike home. :angry2:

anyone seen that clip from Lil' Mad Cow DVD (biker stuff) where the guy has the cam mounted to the side of the bike following someone else. All's going well, until you see one frame of a deers face in front of the cam, then it's all over rover.. can't find a working link to it, but I'll try. It's a good clip..

We need to talk to Igor about that one - somewhere he has posted photos of when his mate took out a sheep, didn't crash, just kept going, photos are sometime later with sheep parts still embedded in the bike.Hitting a stoat would be very rare, you hardly ever see the little buggers, let alone run one over.Ducks are unpredictable - they fly slow, but low and often change direction...slowly,I've had some close calls, but no hits yet.

Ah,here it is.

Just some pointless advice,
Apart from pukeko's who live in a world of their own,all other birds will fly in the direction their looking if their standing on the road or side of the road.
Cows just stand there with a dumb look on their face's an wait for the impact.
Sheep will stop an turn back into what ever path you take,I know this because that's what the bugger I hit did. :angry2:
Possums are Australians so they just stand there an say "ferk maaaate".
Cats lock on to where they want to go an run for it,so aim for where they were an you should miss em'.
Turkeys are possibly related to pukeko's so you never know what their gonn'a do either, but they do taste better so not all's lost.
Come to think of it,if a Turkey jumps out of the long grass an you run it down.Cheak to see if it's a hen, there could be a nest in the grass an the eggs are very nice fryed in butter on an old MOW shovel.
Oh yeah try not to hit flying ducks when your caning it around a corner.
It hurts :msn-wink:

Jacks right - most trajectories are fixed and you can sorta get an idea of where they are going.I've had a duck do a U turn mid air and come back on me....not what I was expecting.Pheasants can be scary - they burst out low and slow, but I've never hit one.Hawks (harriers) I find are pretty cool,I get close enough to almost touch them, but like myna's they like road kill and are street wise.

This reminds me of a sheep I once clobbered whilst touring on a TT500 somewhere near the Lewis Pass. I remember sighting a lamb and ewe on opposite sides of the road heading down a longish straight. The inevitable happened and the ewe ran back across the road to its lamb. Two drums didn't pull me up fast enough and I flattened the fat b@#$&** at about 80k. The TT must have thought it was off roading cause the front wheel just lofted over the b*&%$*, I swear I heard her grunt as I flattened her. A wobble later and I was still upright. Boy did my sphincter pucker on that one. There was wool stuck in the forks that I left there as a lucky reminder.

The last thing I clobbered was a magpie on my BMW. That splattered fairly effectively on my right pot, typical BMW, think of everything, guess thats a good point in having pots to protect & warm your feet.

No more quardle oodle from that feathered fiend.
