View Full Version : Cancellation: John Britten Memorial Race Meeting
LB
9th February 2005, 06:41
Please see below: this is the official statement from Peter ("Red") Fenton re the cancellation of the John Britten meeting, which was set for 19th/20th March. I took this from the Motorcycling NZ website. www.motorcyclingnz.co.nz
To the Road Racing community,
Sadly, I have pulled the pin on the Britten Superbike Event. This is purely a business decision.
Last year I put in a lot of money to run the event. My aim was to bring a different dimension to the New Zealand Superbike scene, as I felt that the current set up needed something new and hopefully exciting. I do believe that I achieved that.
One of the other main reasons I put in a large amount of money into the event, was to show to the main stream public what Superbike racing was all about and also to try and attract companies from out side the box……so to speak….. In coming on board to advance our sport. Sadly, after quite a few promising clients, this was not to be. And because of that, plus the general lack of support out there for Superbike racing. I felt there was absolutely no benefit for myself to keep on putting that sort of money into an event.
I have been asked about doing a smaller scale sized event, but I would feel that I would be going backwards by doing that, compared to what I have already done.
On saying all this, I still have Ruapuna booked for next year and I have thought about doing a special event every two years, very much like the Warbirds over Wanaka is run. I think this could be a viable option for myself, plus I still have plenty of ideas and themes to run the event under. One day I would still like to have a proper built Supermotard track at Ruapuna, tied in with the new track at Taupo and Hampton Downs, a proper National Supermotard series could be run within the New Zealand National Series. I believe this would be of great advantage for both the road fraternity and also the dirt fraternity.
Sorry about this, but as I said, it is a business decision and I need to look after my interests as well.
Thanks for your support.
Red.

Chill out dudes...
If you check your ferry tickets I think you will see that while they are generally non refundable, you can transfer them to another sailing at no charge any time before check in. (which is pretty reasonable really)
We have a little trip organised earlier in march and there will be other events you could enter. You can x/fer your tickets to those.
I believe there was a RAT ride team going down there. Someone should tell them...

I've e-mailed MNZ to request contact details for Peter Fenton - I want to see if the track is still booked or what.
Can someone in CHCH (Dangerous, Aaron, Biff Baff ?) check with the track organisers to see if an open day could be substituted ?
Tell them theres a whole heap of us coming down.

Hey I know what you mean. There is a huge amount of stuff to be arranged to get to these things. I'd be well annoyed!!
I got to say, it's pretty blimmin odd pulling the plug this late in the game. I guess a prospective sponsor didn't come through or fell over at the last minute for the guy. Bugger - it happens though!
I wonder what it does cost to put one of these on? Like if I won Lotto and didn't give the money to the Destiny Church....

There is a 'raid' in Nelson the preceeding weekend - A sizable group are doing a week's tour following, that was to culminate at the Britten races.
The cancellation has been posted on our group site - thank you anyway.

Guys n gals, I've been talking with the Honda Riders Club as they had also arranged an outing to the JB memorial races, and as such are now looking to arrange something else if the numbers work. Could those of you that may be interested in a possible track day at Ruapuna or a ride out of some sort please PM me. No commitments from either side as this is early days and we just need to gauge the potential interest.
Inferior bikes (non Honda's) welcome
Thanks y'all

HRC apparently received official word today that this is definately off, but HRC may have first dibs for a booking should the track become available.

Just been taking with Robyn from the HRCNZ. She said she had been talking to you Biff Baff. Robyn's still keen to ran the HRCNZ rides, but needs to contact the other riders and see what they want to do. Robyn will e-mail me with the up-dated itinerary, which I have told her I will post here. She do mention that she was keen to combine with KB'ers down there for a combined ride on the Sat or Sun. What's SI KB'ers thoughs on that? I'll be down there and will need to fill the Sat/Sun gap that the cancellation of the JB Mem Race has made, so I will definitely be keen:niceone:

To summarise,
There seem to be 3 prongs to the "replacement" weekend attack.
1) A track hire session for an informal hack and slash for those that want to cane their steeds around ruapuna, where somebody unknown to all of us will probably turn up on a bucket and whip both WT _AND_ Aaron...
2) An organised paid HRC organised session with hopefully still dean fulton and jared love, but maybe not, where those of us virginal to smooth black stuff with no lanes and no traffic can get some advice and some unhindered track time
3) A ride somewhere....
I'm just gonna wait till Robyn mails me back - like the rest of you i've already sent my cheque...

Hi D
Well if nothing else you have put a smile on my face – my email is running red hot. I have made a decision to run with the Track Day and if there is sufficient interest we could put together some activities and rides over the weekend – we had organised some rides for the Monday and Tuesday so maybe there will just be a few more rides on offer and a few more people.
Will stay in touch and everyone will be welcome what ever we come up with.
Cheers Robyn

Speaking of ferry crossings ...
Anyone who's already booked their ferry crossing should double check whether they need to change it due to one of the ferrys being out of commission to public transport.

I cant see why not, but I guess that it has to go through the right chanels and silly carry on which all takes time. One thing that I did here is that there might still be some racing happening out there as there was ment to be the usual points meeting for the locals being part of the JBM.... not sure if theres any truth in that, but if so then a day licence may get you in.
