Hi all, back on here as it's not long until I rock up in NZ!
I'll be taking my basic handling skills test out in Auckland soon after I arrive, can anyone recommend a good training school where I can do this? I've got a lot of practice on bikes but haven't been able to sit my UK test since they changed the test rules last month and hardly any test centres can now offer bike tests
Any info greatly appreciated!

I 2nd Fizbin's comment..
I saw Qkchk a couple of months ago, having not touched a bike in 13 years... very patient, explains things clearly etc etc.

I did mine through passrite in Onehunga (they're also in Albany and Hamilton). A couple of hours training and then the test. It was pretty straight forward really. Peter gave us simple, straight forward, and encouraging instructions.

Thanks for the info everyone! I'll give QChik a PM once I'm allowed to send one and have a look at those links. Then all I'll need is a 250! :D

It's a good thing you're 25 and over, means the period for your licenses will be a lot shorter!

Indeed- still occasionally get carded buying beer as well, for extra win (though that may be out of pity more than anything else...)

I have an Intro course that costs $140 which includes 1hr tutition plus the BHS test, all done on my Tricker 250. Majority of people pass first time (with the exception of people who have balance and co-ordination issues).
Next Saturday (20th Dec) is the last training day for 2008. Have a look at my website (below in my Signature) for the 2009 dates and any info regarding the BHS test.

I did mine with a private licenced instructor Doug Swanson
He was great, i got one on one tutoring after i passed for free just cos i asked for a few pointers on what i could do better, and i liked it cs i know of someone who did their test in a group (with passrite) and couldnt actually ride properly but she went unnoticed (not trying to say that you cant ride )
cut a long story short soon after she got her bike she had a serious accident cos of balance issues and fear of cars on blind corners.
Now passrite is very expensive as well, this guy isn't.
I think it was $40 for the test and $50 for a 1 hour lesson but you can just take the test if you want.
heres a link to his yellowpages info.

Hope it helps. I think he does his tests only on sunday, provides all the gear and the bike and it is on the north shore. (not whenuapai as it says)
Hope it goes well for ya

If you haven't done the Basic Handling Skills already, I do it at Massey University in Auckland. I charge $150, and that includes use of bike and helmet. YOu will get cheaper elsewhere, but do you shop in a decent shop or the $2 shop? you will go away knowing more than is required to pass the BHS. I am LTNZ (NZTA) approved and hold a diploma in motorcycle instruction. check out www.rcsom.co.nz.
What you have to weigh up, is do you want the cert for just showing up at the agreed time, or do you want to learn some life saving skills??

Just to update, I went with Passrite in the end as they were fairly close to where I live and had good feedback on here (haven't checked the forums much recently- been busy with the move!)
I passed fine, the instructor was really nice and helpful though I felt the price was a little steep for the time it took. Still, I have my certificate now, just need to pass the scratch test tomorrow and then I can ride my new baby home....

Thanks!
Got it today, the guys at Red Baron were fantastic, really friendy (even printing off and laminating an L-plate for me). Have spent an utterly terrifying and brilliant evening getting used to it and getting very lost
Am now living on toast for the next month or so, but by god it'll be worth it :D
