That was a bit of a bummer for the competitors.
Line up at the start and get told it's off.

The South American Dakar shouldn't have that problem though :D

Ooooh you'll be a shoe-in, mate. Piece of piss with a bike like that. I imagine the South American terrain will suit it very well; the sprung seat will soak up the hills just lovely.

Yeah, you never hear of any sort of unrest or trouble and strife in a place like South America

There was a 660 Ralleye KTM for sale on Trade me. It was from Australia.
I remember the set-up, it was fantastic. It looked great and was ready to go. It belonged to a Privateer and for $20000 you could have the bike, it all set up and included the shipping crate made specially for the event.
I think the competitor used it in the desert race over in Australia.

Fantastic engineering, if only money was no object...

:jerry:

Have you ever wondered about the entry fee for a privateer on the Dakar?
I downloaded the entry form just out of curiosity....
Forget about the 20% needed for a mortgage deposit, the money the Dakar asks for in unbelievable.

I think off hand it was over $100,000 NZD after converting to the Euro...
Insurance, air-lift out, sentinel, comms, etc etc, but once in everything is free, including all the food you want to eat - 24 hour canteen, drink etc..
Mind you, finish a stage at 1am if late and as a privateer rookie, out the door again at 4am, no time for food...lol

The thing that gets me is, I believe it is worth it but the privateers that do this race on their own back and with limited sponsors, albeit a bike shop for tyres or similar.
These guys front up year after year and I remember the year before last there was some Scotsman that was nearly or at 70 years old!
Shit! couldn't belive it, AND he was doing it for the umpteenth time.

So, after seeing Charley enter it and do it before he broke his wrist, the only respect I had for him was the fact that he tried it. The entry, the sponsor etc was all taken care of and all he had to do was front up after a bit of training (all paid for in the desert in Africa, the odd Enduro event in UK)

We really need to appreciaite Joe Bloggs here that turns up and is given a small crate for everything, spare parts, tools and living gear for the next three weeks....

This is a truely amazing event for a motobike enthusiast, my hats go off to these fellas! :second:

French motorcyclist Pascal Terry died of a lung edema which caused a respiratory and cardiac arrest according to an autopsy.

Terry was found dead early yesterday morning after going missing during the second stage of the Dakar Rally on Sunday.

The 49-year-old had informed race control his Yamaha had run out of petrol at the 197-kilometre mark between Santa Rosa and Puerto Madrid but later could not be contacted by organisers.

According to the official report, he showed no signs of bruising nor dehydration and had died sometime between Sunday night and early Monday morning, just a few hours after his disappearance.

'He had taken out his helmet, he had food and water with him and had no signs of bruises, nor his bike,' said local police spokesman Julio Acosta.

'We guess he got lost then he suffered some kind of health problem and he died waiting for the assistance.'

Despite the fact Terry had not been in contact with the organisers since Sunday afternoon, police said they were only informed about his disappearance on Monday night.

The reason for this delay is still unclear and is yet to be clarified by the race organisers.

Argentina newspaper Clarin reported on their website that there was a communication problem between the organisers.

'Apparently Terry turned on his emergency beacon on Sunday afternoon, and that information was received at the Paris headquarters but they didn't inform the Argentina crew until Monday morning,' it claimed.

From AdvRider...

i was at the B.A airport and spoke to a couple of guys from belgium who were at the same point as pascal terry ,they were in a toyota and got stuck at the same point ,the navigator said he stopped and gave pascal water and said he was o.k then, the navigator was walking looking for a new way out of the dense scrub and deep sand ,then he got lost too and could'nt find his car ,he walked for 30km before he found some locals to help him.

they also said there were a few helicopters in the area "looking" for stuck riders.

Especially when you consider that 104 bikes didn't make it at all.
