DUI - do they take your license?

Hi,

If you're done for DUI/DIC etc. in court do they make you hand over your physical license?

I think a family member has lost his license but he swears black and blue he hasn't. I won't let him drive my car but I figure if they usually take it and he has his license on him it probably proves he hasn't been done. Is this the right assumption? Is there a way to find out the status of someone's license or court proceedings?

I'd like to be the better man and just accept his word but i also don't want to lose my car if it's in a accident with an unlicensed driver.

If hes kept it it pretty much a waste of time as the first time he gets pulled over for anything they will go to comms who will reveal hes disq.As a rule they will take it but no doubt some slip through the cracks.Have no doubt if hes been convicted of DUI he doesnt legally have one.

Bad advice. It is an offence to possess a licence once you have been suspended or disqualified... it is supposed to be surrendered as soon as possible to LTNZ (or whoever they are these days). NO instant fine offence either - it is a court hearing.

As for the OP, Glad to hear your suspicions were spot on and you denied him the possibility of losing your car.

I got a little old lady (this is no joke) knock on my door, she showed me a warrant to take my licence and off she went. I became a user of the loser cruiser for 6 months. I asked if she ever run onto issues with people not handing over their license, getting abusive etc. She said that the '111' number was speed dial '1'.

I'm not one to argue the toss if I've commited the alledged offence, a little old lady would have done the job just fine in my case but I got a rather large gentleman of polynesian descent. Somehow I don't think he needed 111 on speed dial:no:

A mate had one turn up asking for his licence,the guy had it wrong and Dougie told him to fuck off back to his office and sort it out,the guy was adament he was getting it until one of Dougs pig dogs showed signs of annoyance at his attitude,Doug said to him "if you want to pursue this do you mind signing a disclaimer" fuck i laughed so much it hurt.

A little grumpy lady turned up and took my son's licence for 100 demerits two weeks ago. Three months ... right over summer and he's just got a job too.

She was representing Baycorp (oh shit I thought she's gonna seize his guitar, stereo etc etc) and had all the formal documentation, ID etc. The gorilla sitting in the car outside sort of prevented any arguing at the time. Actually to the kids' credit he was really good at it, knew it was coming and was quite reflective about having to use his pushie to get places.

Now he's paying off his fines, reckons without having wheels he'll save shit loads (I suspended his registration that ran out this month) and he's probably right.
