Finally found some time to go for a ride. Decided to break a promise I'd made a couple of years ago, and did the Makairo track solo.
Almost had a serious mishap last time solo. Picture ending up 2 metres down a bank, hooked up in a tree, and looking up to see the bike on its side, teetering on the edge, about to come down the bank to meet you. Scared the shit out of me.
Here's some photos from today. Track seems to be getting more over growen each year.
1. Call that gravel........this is gravel
2. The track begins
3. This bit looks easy
4. So does this
5. Glad I didn't come around this corner too quick.
6. Where does the track go??

7. Glad to get the jacket off.
8. View from the top
9. View the other way
10. Even the little 4 hundy will struggle with this rut
Awesome ride. About time you guys brought some big bikes through to clear the track.

cool photos
that gravel looks horrible - ball bearing hell
did you do it west to east or visa versa?
So it all looks ok for a bike of "generous proportions"?
hope to go through there on weekend of 14th/15th

Good pics, looks like a lot of fun.
How long is the track , do you ride it in both directions or is it a dead end ??????

Did a loop from Dannevirke. About 90 km, half seal and half gravel (+ about 8km of track). Went West to East as this is easiest. Big bikes should be fine in the dry.

I meant 13th/14th (senior moment) - I hope to be there on the 14th - weather/family/life permitting - provided I can find some pushers to keep me company - maybe head out to the falls via Towai Rd and then Pongoroa for food or somesuch???

Hmm, that's a fair transit but looks like it could be fun.
Hanging a right at Eketahuna and up Mangaone Valley road looks a little more interesting that SH2.
How lumpy/bumpy is the track? My bash plate still needs attention from a bigger hammer and more skilled weilder than I am, plus a bit of bracket redesign wouldn't go amiss.
At the first decent thump it tends to jam itself against the sump

Heres the track I took on the GPS last time we did it.
the pics are quite large 1920 wide, so if you save them you will be able to see all the detail
Heres a few links to some previous rides, there are quite a lot of photos to
have a look at.
Gives you an idea of what to expect :)
This is the last ride we did, pampa also supplied some other links to follow

I'm in. Gets me out of going to the stinking Christmas parade. Bah humbug.
Track was quite dry, so should be easier than past adventures through there. Some tight going and I found the worst part were low overhanging branches. Big rut towards the end was too deep for even the drz400, but easy to walk the bike past.
Anyone got any plans together yet.

Lets make it Saturday the 13th as it seems to suit most people?
What about meeting at Pahiatua at say 10.30? - can anyone suggest a good coffee shop as a meeting place?
I'd be keen to head out to Pongaroa afterwards via the Towai Rd.
I might head up north at the end of the day and stay at Hastings and maybe do the Gentle Annie on Sunday and then via the backroads to Ashurst and then back home Sunday lateish.

OK twist my arm - I'd love to come - should be all good - I'd already socialised that weekend as the date for the next ADV ride - just need to get the emotional bank balance topped up this weekend! - cheers S
