I've just had a look at Tool on wikipedia then a look at the Beatles..
No contest dude.
The Beatles released more than 40 different singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one, earning more number one albums (15) than any other group in UK chart history. This commercial success was repeated in many other countries; their record company, EMI, estimated that by 1985 they had sold over one billion records worldwide.[2] According to the Recording Industry Association of America, The Beatles have sold more albums in the United States than any other band.[3] In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles number one on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[4] According to that same magazine, The Beatles' innovative music and cultural impact helped define the 1960s, and their influence on pop culture is still evident today. In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of top-selling Hot 100 artists to celebrate the chart's fiftieth anniversary; The Beatles reached #1 again.[5]

Mwahahaha, I'll tell you a little secret, my husband and kids enjoy listening to him. I think it's a Dutch thing.
For performers, in regard to a live acts as opposed to recordings, Elton the queer is right up there in my book (yes I did see him years and years ago in Auckland), am really looking forward to seeing Kylie next week; and even though he's the king of mega weird I reckon as a live act Jacko would have to be right up there with the best of them. (When he was at the top of his game anyway).

My in-laws are Dutch, and strangely, although my wife doesn't like salty licorice, our eldest son does. Mind you, he's weird...
It can't be good for you though, it's loaded with all kinds of salts and chemicals.
I have to admit, if you don't count Sleepwalkers and Mombassa, I haven't been to many live concerts. My feelings are a great concert is one where the performer sounds much better than listening to a recording. Too many sound worse (don't put anything extra into it).
I went to see Bowie on his "Serious Moonight" tour some 25 years or so ago, and was most disappointed. After listening to his live performances from the prior decade, and given that Auckland was his last concert on the tour, I was expecting somewhat more than the measured and restrained performance he gave, and felt ripped off. Similarly, Little Rive Band at Nambassa may as well have not bothered turning up - they sounded exactly like a recording. So now, with the odd exception, I don't 'do' live concerts, as they're often overpriced and poorly engineered; do concerts have to be so loud that you can't actually hear any detail?

Just so you know, there is a newly released Bowie Live CD "Called Live at Santa Monica 1972". Its been widely bootlegged though often of inferior quality because it was simulcast on a local radio station. The official release is worth buying because the sound is not bad. As Bowie says in the liner notes "we screwed up a few things, but it was a good gig" or words to that effect.
I am a HUGE fan of a Bowie live recording called "David Live": its concerts recorded in Philedelphia in 1976. You need to get the reissue because it has better sound and an extra track. The Ziggy Stardust live DVD/CD at the Hammersmith Odeon (ending with the immortal "this is not only the last stop on this tour its the last concert we'll ever do" line) is only OK in my view.
Stage is the other essential live Bowie recording as well. If only for the version of Station to Station on it.
I dont share your opinion about the Serious Moonlight gig/tour by the way: I saw the Wellington show and it was excellent. Theres a DVD of it around too.

I have just finished reading a book about Black Sabbath, and have been playing their first five albums non stop for two weeks.
Jealous about the Wembley thing: thats an amazing DVD.
The band I would most like to see live (apart from the Clash, or the Sex Pistols in 1976) presently is Rammstein. I reckon that would be good show (having watched the Volkerball DVD a LOT)

Another one-hit wonder band. Catapulted to "fame" per virtue of an unfortunate plane crash. Regrettably their one hit has been flogged to death ever since by radio station "music directors" devoid of imagination, who treat the egregious Steve Miller hit "Take the money and run" in the same manner. Hang on a minute. Queen's final concert was at Knebworth on the Magic tour. I know 'cos I was there and it was after Wembley. I also saw the Newcastle concert in the company of some delighful young nurses.
For mine the thing that set Queen apart was Freddie Mercury. His (er) sensitivity to the crowd. They could switch the tone or feel of their songs in an instant to match the mood of the crowd. If you want an example of the perfect short set look at the Live Aid performance. IMO they owned the event.

You are right in the fact that Sweet Home Alabama was their biggest single, but they also had another song that hit big, and was released a year before "Sweet Home Alabama"...In my opinion "Free Bird" is a much better song, but it does not receive much airplay because the song is quite a long one at over 10 minutes.
What needs to stop is Kid Rocks awful song that is based around Sweet Home Alabama....

I agree there man, am a huge beatle fan, was never old enough to see any of their concerts but been to liverpool to see places where the boys made history. Been to the Cavern niteclub to see a band called The Mersey Beetles, brilliant atmosphere. Went to places like Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, Forthlin Road ( Pauls home ), Mendips ( Johns home ), Arnold Grove ( Georges home ) and finally Admiral Grove ( Ringos home ). Bought plenty of momentos at the Beatles Museium down the Queens docks by the river Mersey. An absolutely awesome experience, want to go back and stay at the new Hard Days Night Hotel in a couple of years.

Yes Ratfn - I am kidding. Who is the greatest has no empirical measure and will only ever be a matter of conjecture.
Personally my favourite performer is Bruce Springsteen.
Obscure faves are Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Same genre.
If forced to nominate a greatest it would be Beatles or Stones. The extra 30 years means I'd probably favour the glimmer twins.

at the moment, i feel there ar'nt many bands that can compare to Muse, their concert was amazing, any one who has seen H.A.A.R.P. their live dvd will concur
i only say this as atm there are few bands which are as good as their records and even less which are better than their records
although definately not the best band or performer ever, at the moment, as in 2008, they are definately up there

Yet, IMHO, Blackfoot were much better and Ricky Medlocke shouldn't have canned them to go be Skynyrd's frontman.

I agree. We went to Rock2Wgtn earlier this year and saw both Kiss and Alice Cooper perform. To say I was disappointed is a huge understatement – they sucked! Don't even get me started on Ozzy the decrepit old man. It’s pretty sad when he gets an excited and is only able-bodied enough to jump up and down on the same spot.
I’m absolutely gutted that I was too young to see my favourite bands perform (G’N’R, Led Zep. and Pink Floyd). The best live performance I’ve seen was U2.

Yep U2 were pretty good the first time they came here back in the 80s. We saw them in a small room at the old Winter Show Buildings.
Ian Drury was pretty impressive live. Boomtown Rats were good. But the worst live concert I attended was Dire Straits at Athletic Park (that old stand sure did bounce). They were possibly the most boring moments of my life.

Hmmm. Of course, this is a highly subjective decision. My best so far would be Slipknot a coupla months ago. Or Korn earlier this year. Awesome performances both of them, and you know you've been to a good concert when your lungs are collapsing from being trampled, your voice is gone, you cannot hear your mate talking in the car, and your head is exploding from the sheer awesome.
It's also down to what happens on the night, for instance Disturbed could have been up there on the list, if the sound had been better (I believe the sound techs have been convicted and beheaded for that not-bad-but-not-awesome concert).

I've always believed that live music sounds better in smaller settings.I have seen The Stones and Bowie in stadiums and while they both were way past there best it hardly left much of an impression (maybe coz the boppers keep cheering each time they shook there asses)Dave Dobbyn down at the local pub is a better memory.
But for me the best would have to be Stevie Ray Vaughan, the man bled class out of every note he sang and played.Married a kiwi girl to boot,so had taste in women as well.

Pink Floyds Dark Side Of The Moon concert is still the one to beat out of all the concerts I've seen. Awesome laser show!! Paul McCartneys concert had a great vibe as so many people sang along and being with 70,000 people singing along was pretty cool. I still like Metallica..Ozzfest even
