View Full Version : Day trips from Wellington/Hutt on a 250?

OK, so now the little lime green monster is run in I thought that this weekend I should start finding out where I can get to on it for a day trip - the obvious limitations being the 7.7L tank and the narrow, tailbone destroying seat! Thought it might be useful for other newbies if I shared my experience and maybe others would have some ideas to share.

I'd been wanting to go explore the south coast of the Wairarapa so decided to do it over two days, west on Saturday and east on Sunday, each one a separate day trip from Lower Hutt.

Saturday:
Over the Rimutaka Hill to Featherston then south down the west side of Lake Wairarapa to Ocean Beach then west out onto the 4wd track along the coast towards Turakirae Head which is south of Wainuiomata on Coast Road. Along the beach/4wd track from Ocean Beach there's fun to be had with some streams/rivers to ride thru!

Now I've been to Turakirae Head from Wainui so I've seen the "Private Land" sign and gate although the gate that end is often open so thought I would chance my luck from the east! Would've been nice to do a loop and not have to do a retrace! Wainui looks a helluvalot closer going round the Head!

Here's what I learnt on the day - I was short on gas at the start of the day, had to fill up in Upper Hutt and didn't top up in Featherston! Bad idea! The access to Turakirae was blocked with a locked gate so had to retrace back to Featherston which made it a tad tight on fuel but fine, just a little worrying. Lesson learned! Met a local guy on a quad who reckons you can get the gate key from the Station from the western end by 9am by arrangement with return required on same day! Sounds like a future plan!

With some little detours did 250k on the day. And by the end of it was wishing I had a sheepskin for sunday, but alas not!

Sunday:
Up over Rimutaka Hill again, head east from Featherston to Martinborough, fill tank at the BP in Martinborough!!! Then south on Lake Ferry Road. Just before Lake Ferry you can turn east onto the Cape Palliser Road to Ngawi/Cape Palliser. If you're ready for a latte or other beverage you can head the 9k into Lake Ferry and get sorted at the pub/cafe and then choose to either backtrack OR do the 4wd drive track along the beach to Whangimoana Beach and then join the Cape Palliser road there. Near Te Kopi did find a couple of logging tracks with unlocked gates I had a quick look down! Then there's some twisties and you're back on the coast raod again. Just before that little twistie section there is a yellow diamond slip warning sign and a short section unsealed, along some unstable cliffs, right after you come round a bend so keep your eye out. It starts off uphill so not a major problem even if you don't catch the slip sign. Nice run to Ngawi, along the coast, where there's loos and a mobile cafe! From Ngawi it's gravel to Cape Palliser! I didn't go all the way round the end of Cape Palliser to the 4wd track but turned back at Te Kawasakawa Rocks before the Mangatoetoe Stream and had lunch in Ngawi.

For those that like a little speed at some point in their day, there's some long straights from Martinborough to Lake Ferry and the Cape Palliser road has some lush sweeping turns as you cruise by a turquoise sea - life's rough aint it?! Even made it back to Martinborough before the reserve was needed although it must have been close as i gave the bike a bit of a blowout for some of it! (well it's run in now so ya gotta haven't ya!).

The BP in Martinborough does close at 6pm on Sundays BUT they have a pre-pay machine on the wall for out-of-hours fuel purchase anytime, just stick your EFTPOS card in and away you go - good to know as it may only be 20k ish to get to Featherston but if you're out on a 250 with thimble tank and pushing your luck, Featherston could easily be a tad too far at the end of the day!

The other thing that turned out to be fun was that the D605's turned out to be fine/fun on the gravel although a bit of a pain on fine shingle/sand! They were also fun on the switchbacks on Rimutaka Hill! Thats the trade off I guess with those, they're more street than serious off road for a street legal knobbly. I think once the K760's are on the bike in the new year the 4wd tracks will be more fun but maybe the Rimutaka Hill switchbacks won't!!

Did 315k on the day and YES I WANT A SHEEPSKIN....... NOW!!!!!! :crybaby:

Anyway hope that little summary is helpful to any newbies stuck on a 250 for a few months like me!

Any suggestions for my next day ride from Hutt?

nice one! I only made it out to lake Ferry once from Porirua last year. Last weekend I had a sniff around the pylon tracks at the bottom of the Featherston side of the rimutakas. THere's some concrete blocks preventing 4WDs getting past, but there is ample room to get any bike through. Very rocky, steep in some places, but a good ride that gives views over teh Wairarapa lagoons and Kaitoke. If it wasn't for a locked gate you could get from Featherston to Kaitoke through these trails. Worth a look.

Cheers! Those pylon tracks sound like a fun challenge - will keep an eye out for the access to those when I next go over the Rimu's!

In the original post I forgot to say:

A thank you to MarkS who recommended on the 250 I restrict the days ride to 250-300kms as more would be a serious pain in the @rse - literally!

Mark, you were bang on and the last few km's on Sunday after coming down off the Rimutaka Hill were accompanied by my butt screaming it had had enough, but overall that 250-300kms looks spot on on a 250, cheers mate!

My DT230 seat is way more comfortable than your plank so you must be a real hard arse :)

Sheepskins are available cheap from the sheepskin place in Himatangi ($40-$50) or you can get one custom made at a place in Otaki ($120 I think).

I had extra padding added to the seat and got it recovered at a place in Newtown (Rotary Motor Trimmers) for $100 - made a massive difference.

If you hunt around you can get 3 liter petrol containers for about $15-$20 that are a good compromise size/weight/range wise - takes the stress out of using up your complete tank full.

Have you explored the Karapoti/Mungatooks yet? - the 250 would be ideal - were bound to organize a ride through there soon - might even go through this weekend after attacking Odlins Rd

cheers

Thanks for the info on the sheepskins Mark. Actually you have reminded me there is also a sheepskin place in Hataitai/Evans Bay area in Welly I can check out too!

The 3L petrol container is an interesting idea for when/if I try to put panniers on. At the moment I'm coping with a nifty sized/shaped bag bungeed on the back that has my spare tubes/tyre levers/tools in, and lighter stuff on my back in a smallish backpack, so not sure where i'd put the petrol as of now LOL!

I haven't explored the Karapoti/Mungatooks yet as TBH I don't know where they are!!! Is this up in the Akatarawa Forest area? Have been over that road to Waikanae from Upper Hutt but not been offroad up there yet. If a ride gets organised there I am well up for joining you guys if I can.

cheers,
Dave

I spoke to the land owner at the Kaitoke end of that track and he won't allow access through his farm to get from the track back to the road, even though it's only aboout 500 metres along his cattle race.

hmmm. fair enough if he owns it I s'pose. To be fair you'd probably end up with all sorts of f*ckwits up there in SUV's and 2smokes if he opened access. Instead there was just me an a few dead possums.

I'm definitely no hard arse ;) so went to the Sheepskin Warehouse on Evans Bay Parade in Evans Bay, Welly, and got one plenty big enough to sort out my plank of a seat for $35! Looking forward to testing it out after having cut it to shape this arvo! :woohoo:

Been lookin at the map for this weekends 250 day trip to test out the newly aquired sheepskin (!) and fancying the ride down White Rock Road from Martinborough, to White Rocks. On the map it looks like there could potentially be plenty of gravel to have fun on after the Hau Nui Windfarm! And petrol allowing, maybe take a look at the 4wd track heading west from White Rocks!

Anyone been down here recently?

Where does the gravel start after you leave Martinborough?

Met up with mate Ben on his DR250 at the Shell at west end of Jackson Street in Petone; chain lube & gas up and all set for fun in the sun!

Planned ride up over the Rimutakas, through Featherston to Martinborough(topping up with fuel here!!!), head out on the Lake Ferry Road for about a mile then left into the White Rock Road(well signposted!), following this all the way to the coast to White Rock, which is east of Cape Palliser and the Aorangi Forest Park. If fuel and/or time allowed head west from White Rock on the 4wd track along the coast.

The run down White Rock Rd is very scenic and some nice sweeping turns - should've stopped for more pics, but there's four below at least!

On the map it looked like there could be gravel anytime after hitting the Hau Nui Windfarm south of Martinborough. As it turned out the seal is now well past the windfarm all the way to Tuturumuri. From there its a 24km gravel run to White Rock on the coast - was hard packed with fine gravel today - great fun with a couple of full-on sideways moments just to keep me awake! There's a few side tracks off the gravel section and a dry river bed, which is what we went for a quick play on! There's no fencing down here so watch yourself with the rampaging livestock!!!:angry2:

It was 60kms to White Rock from Martinborough so we had fuel for a play on the 4wd coast track BUT alas were short on time - a good excuse to have to go back! Just before White Rock there's the right turn on Kaiwaka Rd to the Aorangi Forest Park that looked another possibility for exploration! Looks like there's enough fun to be had down there that its worth strappin a 3 or 5L petrol can on the bike!

Ben's got more experience and confidence offroad so a big thx to him for leading out on the gravel and giving me the confidence to get the speed up on the KLX a bit and let it do its thing - wicked fun!!! Although I did have to suck on his dust for 50kms! :argh:

Oh, yeah, the newly aquired sheepskin definitely made some difference in the comfort level today!!

Round trip from Petone - 258kms.

Here's a few pics:

1. Fuel & Latte stop in Martinborough - REQUIRED!!!!!
2. Start of the gravel on White Rock Road at Tuturumuri.
3. The White Rock !!!
4. Lookin west from White Rock towrds the coast 4wd track and the Aorangi Forest Park......... next time !!!

Hey Dave - how'd you affix the sheepskin to your seat?

Paladin

Hey Dave - how'd you affix the sheepskin to your seat?

Totally low tech ....... used two bungy cords!

The rear one on each side is hooked into the little metal guard loop behind each pillion footrest. This enables it to sit behind the pillion strap and therefore not under your butt!

The front one runs just forward of the dip in the seat. On the off side its hooked into another little metal loop that is protecting some cables just below the seat aand next to the bend in the frame. On the near side there's no obvious place so its just hooked under the faring above the fuel switch at the moment, not ideal but ok.

Check pic 1 in the post just above about Saturdays ride on White Rock Road, you can see the off side connections in that. If that's not makin sense PM me and i'll take more photos close up!

The guy at the sheepskin place said apparently some people use velcro but I couldn't see anywhere on the KLX I particularly wanted to stick velcro on!

The sheepskin DID help some as I didn't feel pain as early in the ride but by 250kms I still had a sore butt like usual! Am already thinking double thickness sheepskin could be worth a try LOL!
