View Full Version : R6 totalled - should I buy it back for the track?

I may have had a wee incident on Friday which has left my R6 looking a shadow of it's former self....

I'm considering asking the insurance co to buy it back so but I'm not sure how to find out whether it's worth while. The subframe is very twisted so will have to be replaced but I'm not sure about the frame and the forks - should I just take it to a bike shop before I hand it over to the insurance assessor and ask them to check it out?

get another R6 if you so love them. probly not worth going trough all the trouble with the old one.

I would be doing it so I could have one for the track that I wouldn't need to worry about destroying, then I'd get another bike for the road. I'd only look at getting it going again and not worry about the cosmetics of it all.

Go straight to the insurance company - the assessor will arrange for it to go to a shop and then he ought to tell you exactly what's wrong with it (round about the time he decides whether to repair it or give you a cheque). Then Q&A him to determine if it's worth buying as a track bike - and hopefully your insurance company will give you first dibs on the wreck.

Sorry to hear about the incident K! hope your ok.

Usually the bike shop does a report of damage for the insurance co. That will pick up if frame/forks are damaged. Even if they are, there is a place up in Cambridge that does a great job of straigtening frames and forks etc. So if you can buy it back for a good price then its probably worth it. Might pay to price up all the bits you will need for getting on the track as well though like levers etc. Ebay is good for stuff like that.

Be awsome to see you out racing!!! you will do well chick:Punk:

What Toto said.

Express interest in the bike to the assessor, get another one the same (or similar) if you are so inclined, then offer to buy back your original for the value of parts that you would use (tires, power commander, forks - anything you might actually want).

Otherwise just take the insurance money, do what you need to do, and walk away

Yep I'm all good thanks, just a bit sore as you'd expect so feeling quite fortunate!

Great I'll get the insurance co onto it then and do a bit of research on the parts. I'm thinking even if it's not worth while that perhaps I'll get a track bike of some description, it's way too upsetting seeing it sitting all sad and broken in the shed! Also I almost had to catch public transport to work this morning which is infinitely frustrating...

I have a mate who wrote off a K7 GSX-R600 with only 320km on the clock.
He bought it from the insurance company, sourced 2nd hand bits where he could, and aftermarket fairings etc, and ended up with a primo track bike for about 4.5k, including buying the wreck

Go for it!! :niceone:

Sorry to hear about the bin and glad to hear you're not too worse for wear.
What do you use the R6 for mostly?
I've only met you once and that was at a track day in Taupo, if you do the great majority of your riding on the track then it's gonna be worth your while to pick up the wreck (within reason) otherwise the new R1 is due out Jan/Feb. :niceone:

I disagree, the power of a thou is addictive - it even makes you think you're the man.

Just because you need the power of a thou to re-pass all the 600's that just go past you in the corners doesn't make the 600's lame.

I'd trade my 1000cc for a brand new 600cc sports bike anyday.

Ok, in my humble oppinion, a 600 feels like a step backwards after 1k.

Ive ridden honda model range and some other bikes to come to that statement.

Yes but then a 1000cc would feel lame after you'd ridden the same bike with a turbo.

Just like your missus doesnt look so hot after you've been down at showies with your mates.

ok enough with the pissing match over 600 vs 1000 and calling each other gay already. Perhaps MF you could start a new thread and provoke some similarly mature discussion there instead?
