View Full Version : Shell Station and a nice lady looking after a biker

Tank
1st December 2008, 12:26
Pulled into Shell this morning and filled up the V-Strom. $25 (Loving the new petrol prices).

I go inside to pay, and *&%& (thats polite for fuck), my cards are missing from my wallet.

See lady at counter and explain that my cards have probably been stolen and I have just noticed.

I offer her $10 (all the cash I had in my wallet), photo id to hold (My drivers licence), a brand new $1100 blackberry bold (because I hate my iphone and had to get something with a decent battery) as collateral as I head back to the house to pick up some cash (all of 20 mins return).

She wont allow it. I offer to leave my Givi box off the bike as well - nope.

She tells me the only option is to call the police. I explain that:

a) I'm leaving them plenty of stuff to show my intent to come back, and
b) I will be back within 20 mins - its not like the cops are going to come out lights and sirens blaring.

How about I offer - I leave all my stuff here, you take my number plate as well - and If I'm not back in 20 mins - call the police then?

No - we have to call the police now and you have to wait. (BTW this is the manager of the branch I am talking to)

I suggest that they call them then, but I'm off, and I will be back and paid before they arrive.

Lady behind me - goes "You folk are being stupid - here let me pay for his petrol."

I object but the Shell staff are lightening quick to get the problem moved to another customer.

Lady turns to me and says "I cannot let someone start the week on a bad note" and despite being soaking wet in my bike gear, gives me a hug and says have a great day!

I had to plead with her to get her address so I can pop around with the $$$ (and some flowers) this evening.

This was some very well dressed mid 40 lady driving a nice new exec 4x4. Now with a really wet jacket from hugging a bloke in dirty old bike gear.

What a sweetheart! She made my day. Now fuck it - I feel obliged to do something nice for someone else .... grrrrr

Back when I was working at BP some lady couldn't make her $17 bill. I paid it in full and she payed me back with a nice card and a $20 vodafone topup.

Nothing like doing good for someone else for a change.

that shell woman sounds like a right bitch! that woulda been more than enough for me to hold onto while you went and got the cash. in the end though, my boss changed the rules and we werent allowed to take ANYTHING from a customer except a signed promise to pay [tui please!] meant quite a few dollars of petrol unpaid by the time i quit.
we had something like 10 broken cell phones, 3 empty wallets, a broken pink ipod, a broken digital camera and the cover off a car stereo. basically a cupboard full of crap. needless to say, when the owner of the camera failed to return as promised, i took off with the memory card. [left it for a year or so to be sure]

good on the now slightly damp 4wd driver. definately pay it forward, even if its just a smile at someone having a bad day.

Serves you right for going to a Shell station.

The one time my card has bounced was at a BP station - I just handed the chap my drivers license, headed home and was back with cash within quarter of an hour. I like the guys at BP Howick - they know me, and they like motorbikes. Plus rep to you BP Howick guys, even if you are boyracers! :niceone:

cards are gone-burger. Cancelled this morning as soon as I got to work. Checked on Internet banking - and accounts still have $$$ in them so I'm guessing whoever stole them didnt get my pin.

That will teach me for taking my wallet out in West Auckland!

I work at a BP and we use the general rule of "if it's worth more than the gas" for holding stuff (wallets are worth more in time replacing the crap inside than monetary value). Anyway, you guys have no idea how many cameras are around that place in case you dont come back...

It ought to be enough for the attendant to sight your driver's license and take down the license number...

In that case the driver/rider has been identified and whether the vehicle is yours or not won't be an issue as well.

Good on that lady for sorting it for ya however that shell station seriously needs new management.

In your case what the fuck are you suppose to do when you've got your wallet stolen and you have happily offered the service station your $1000 blackberry + to jot down your details, and they still want to call the fucken cops? What the fuck for I wonder? You haven't done anything remotely wrong and apart from filling up without realizing your wallet got taxed.

Any person with a brain would've just taken your blackberry and said ''no worries mate, go ahead home and grab some cash''.

I thought I heard it all but this story got to be one of the most unbelievable, and the dumbest logic of any service station staff or any person for that matter.

Where the fuck do we get people like this?

Popped in to the local servo yesterday, filled up and went in to pay. The woman in the queue before me who was obviously disabled, handed the attendant $30 and asked if he could fill her car. Guy said "No".

No offer of help, or "Just hang on a minute while I serve these other people, i'll be right with you". Flat out refused. Told her to do it herself.

What a cock.

I ended up filling the car for the lady while she made some jokes about "service station".

I've been in a gas station when some guy returned to collect his shit again the next day and the staff are telling him it isn't there and they don't know anything about it.
He was getting very irate and the staff had changed. Don't know the final outcome, but I can kind of see where they could make a policy to avoid that.
Still, 8yrs, if they can't bend the rules they're stupid.

Man, when I started reading the story I was hoping that the police would be called and you would have to wait for them to arrive and then get to explain your situation. I would love to know the response from an officer of the law upon arriving at that situation.
Geez, a guy offering to leave photo ID and expensive items - seems like a no brainer for the service station manager, who co-incidentally seems to have no brains.

I have once managed to fill my car then realise that I did not have my wallet with me. I explained to the (BP) service station manager that a return trip to my home would take less than 10 minutes, he got me to write down my name, address and license # (I think) and I drove off, returning less than 10 minutes later and paying. I still use that service station and always check that I have my wallet before pumping the gas.

MarkH
1st December 2008, 22:50
The problem is that the service station can't legally do anything with them - as they still technically belong to the people who left them at the counter.

Very much a no-win situation.

Rubbish - if the owners don't return in a week then the staff can take it home - who's to say otherwise? It would only be illegal if they involved the law and got an opinion, if they just take the stuff home and say nothing then the law has better things to worry about it.

If they were to take the items to a police station and explain the situation then the police would probably treat it as lost property - if unclaimed for 6 months the service station owner would then become the legal owner of that property. But who would bother with that?

If I were the service station owner or manager I would gladly hold onto anything offered that was worth clearly more than the petrol. I would also get the name, address, license number & number plate. I would tell the person that if they didn't come back that day then their details would be passed onto the police. If some customer left an iPod or cellphone or digital camera or whatever then it would be unusual for them not to return.

The BP in Whitford had a sign on the counter saying 'we will siphon it out if you can't pay'. When I asked him about it, presuming it was people passing through he said 'nope, it's locals taking advantage'. And if you don't know Whitford, folks there aren't poor.

The BP in Beachlands ended up closing because of people not paying.

I'm not saying that this was not an obvious cockup, and all of you people here are obviously honest and wouldn't dream of a driveoff, but not all people are so nice. And some are bloody talented liars.

By the way, I know someone who left an expensive watch with a taxi driver to show they were coming back out to pay, and when they came back out the taxi had done a runner with the watch!
Our gas station here in Rata-vegas would trust the guy, I've seen them do it. They also still take cheques! And pump gas for people.

I bet it was the grumpy old bugger who spends his life working there, not to mention Rose who's not exactly a ray of sunshine either.

I vowed never to use that station ever again, but its difficult when you live in Beachlands and its the closest gas station and 10mins away.

I doubt Beachlands BP closed because of people not paying, more like not enough service

Nope, I was speaking to the owner one day about the lack of gas there. (in Beachlands). They had been put on Cash on delivery by BP, and so sometimes they had no gas, so of course people like me stopped going there as finding they had none was ridiculous. They didn't last long after that. The guy was a softy and got taken advantage of. Letting people take gas without paying is the ultimate in good service wouldn't you agree?

I agree the staff at Whitford were pretty average, but it's not really a good reason to steal gas eh?

Thanks for sharing a really nice story Tank!

My dear old mum used to work for the MOT and often used to top up fines and accounts from her own purse.
Her two highlights include an old fella that returned an hour later, on a bicycle in the pissing down rain, to pay her back the 10c he'd borrowed (She'd told him not to bother).
The other was a young man she loaned $20, which he could only repay the following Thursday. She received a bollocking from a senior MOT officer, because this guy was a well known criminal and told not to expect to see him or her money again. Thursday arrived and the young guy returned as promised with the $20 and a big thank you!:niceone:
In all the years she did this, apparently no one let her down!

i gave one of my former co workers an ear bashing early one sunday morning. customer drives in and holds a sign out the window reading "assistance required." co worker stares out the window at the healthy looking middle aged guy and comments about him being lazy. she shuts up quick when i snarl at her that he happens to be in a wheelchair and cannot serve himself.
i got her a few times being a bitch like that. many customers disliked her as she would stand in the window, behind the counter, txting or staring out at the customers and refusing to help.
a good number of our customers were elderly folks who often didnt have the strength left in their hands to run the pump, or they had arthritis. my rule was always serve the older people first. younger generations can do it themselves unless they are disabled somehow. and i always hurried out to serve customers if they asked, but they had to wait until my shop was empty of other customers [7am sunday shift when i was sole charge]

staff at servos are always changing. my local shell is great! but when they first reopened after renovating, they had some real pricks working for them. thankfully the pricks didnt last long, and the current staff seem to have smiles tattooed on. lol.
