Got a ticket today cop said i was doing 135 on a bend can they detect your speed even in bends? Fined me for 122 so guess it takes a while to register on the machine

How fast were you going?

You must have been going faster than the 135km/h because the speed reading is diminished when your direction is not directly towards the source of the microwave or laser, which measures your speed towards it, not your speed in the direction of travel i.e. it knows you're travelling either away from it or toward it but not at an angle. It's called the cosine effect. If you're doing 140km/h at a 45 degree angle to the patrol, your speed will be measured as Cos 45 x 140km/h = 0.707 x 140km/h = 99km/h.

It's actually 99.0 km/h... Just to be consistent. :D

(or that depends on whether you consider the initial value of 140 km/h as having 2 or 3 significant figures...)

Well you are probably stuffed. With visuals and know the right question to 'cross' with it's possible to get off.

So I should swerve if I see a cop? Can you be ticketed for doing 50k Under the limit?

If you were to swerve at any angle > a couple of degrees for even the shortest amount of time, i think the dangerous driving would replace the speeding fine :)

Ps wicked use of trig, i'm impressed.

Is my capitalization sufficient?

yours truly got pinged back in 98 for doing 195km/h on a heavily modified zx9. And the cop was going towards me around the corner. One argued that radars can't work around corners with trees and that the corner had a posted 80km/h advisory speed limit. None the less he proceeded to write me up for not being in control of motor vehicle (charge which was later laughed out of court) and speeding. Yes, all at the same time. I chose to go to court and argued that there is no way i could have made the corner (in control of my motorcycle) at the speed the cop was suggesting i was doing. Also i mentioned that the traffic officer did not have a radar in the car and only estimated my speed. Luckily the judge (motorcyclist him self) saw my reasoning and let me off all the charges. Wanker plod was soo upset, he walked up to me after the hearing and said that he was going to ping every last one of us so the streets are safer for the car users.

A plod on a mission me thinks. For those who want to know that happened on muy holiday in Blenheim.

If only he knew how fast i was going before i got to the corner :sweatdrop

Did the cop move to Auckland after that? That would explain why the guys in the weekly Auckland ride are so upset

possibly. haha. he was an old fart. Probably retired by now. Still, makes you see that some of them are out to get us just for wearing leathers and riding a shiny new sports bike. And before you think of saying that we riders deserve it because most of us break the law anyway. I had a cop last week walk past my parked up bike in the middle of town, stopped and checked out my tyres, WOF and Reg. Then walked off. Nosy little fucker he was too.

Yup. He was the main reason i got more serious into bikes. Watching that guy on a bike was like watching a good porn. The win was the climax. The guy had pure talent. :first:

As for cars (tin tops) well, i guess they have their place as mobile chicanes. hehe
