Nail in tyre!

Well, DB and I get to town today and he notices a nail in my rear tyre!:shit: so we ride around to the local bike shop and he pulls out this 4 inch long nail.. the type that goes in a nail gun. It didn't puncture the tyre but went in and travelled along kind of parallel to the outside of the tyre... lucky!

Do I worry that it'll weaken the tyre though? It's the original Shinko that was on the bike when I bought it in January..

Hi BiK3RChiK, I dont know what sort of bike you are on, but if it were a sports bike capable of cruising at over the speed limit I would say REPLACE THE TYRE.
If however it is a 250 commuter not used on the m/way or open road then bike shop is the best to comment after they have had a look. They may consider it is safe enough :)

yes also is the wheel a tubeless or tube fitted inside your tire...as if tube is fitted wouldn't think that you'll have a problem at all....tubeless well id it hasn't cut the steelbelting...should be okay too...may pay to keep on eye it for any tire pressure loss...

It's a Hyosung GT250R. I don't go excessively fast on it, so I'm kind of hoping it'll be ok. The nail was towards the outer of the tyre and there seems to be heaps of wear left on the tread. I often check the tyre pressures anyway, but will probably keep a closer eye on it now.

Hopefully the bloke that fixed the tyre will know the regs around that sort of thing. If it could not be fixed safely, he would not have. All the same, if I were you, I would start saving for a new tyre and replace as soon as you can. No sense in taking a risk.

Agreed, I'd change the tyre as well. Shinkos are really not good tyres regardless and something like this may give you good reason to upgrade to something a bit better, Battlaxes or something.

I cleaned the tyre today and found what looks like a nail in it,called cycletreads re getting it repaired,they said if it's 50mm from the outside they can't legally repair it,and it looks like it's just on the 50mm mark.

I am rather annoyed as the tyre is basically brand new and cost me $300!!

I don't want to take it out,as I might get a flattie.........

One time I had litterally just put a new tyre on to get a warrant - rode it in and found that I had picked up a bloody nail - RETEST AND NEW TYRE REQUIRED :angry:

Happened similar fashion once in the car to...cha ching!

Make up a soapy water solution and test it for leaks. If there's no leak whatsoever, then pull the nail straight out with the needle-nose pliers and re-test. If there's still no leak, I'd carefully ride it around for a week keeping speeds down, and then decide if you trust it or not.

Plenty of times something gets in a tire and only goes half way through, and thats not worth throwing the tire out over.

If it has gone right through and the tyre goes down, get a dog poo repair and shove it in there, and quietly commute on it. Again, after a week or so decide if you care or not.

Shinko's are not good tyres. If you rode with Pirelli's on your GT250 you would never go back, tyres are THE most important things on a bike, they will help you stay safe. If you ever feel that you are getting bored with the 250, put a de-baffled (it's one screw to remove) screeming demon pipe on it, extra 5hp straight away.

If you ever feel that you are getting bored with the 250, put a de-baffled (it's one screw to remove) screeming demon pipe on it, extra 5hp straight away.The extra 5hp is piss all, but a LOUD pipe is the fucking bizo - changes the whole character of the bike. The shinkos are fine if you want to learn to corner them in the dry. They are okish commuters if you are happy to ignore their poor behaviour in the wet and just grit your teeth and ride them - actually good training in my opinion.
