View Full Version : Road Condition... New Plymouth-Te Kuiti

Had occasion today to drive to HN airport and back. The road between New Plymouth and Te Kuiti is, not to put too finer point on it, in SHITE condition.
Heaps of roadworks (everything between newly layed base coarse metal to new tarseal), and heaps of bleeding tarseal. I was quietly thankful not to be on the sem fiddy.
Just a heads up, folks!

Go via Wanganui.
It is appalling the state it is in. Why is the gorge fucked again? Why is Mahoenui hill slipping again? Why is it they continue to make little wee patch job that become more of a hazard than the original problem? Why is it they leave 3 inches of loose metal over patch repairs?
It is because we have short sighted idiotic bureaucrats in charge who give us roads the ancient romans would have laughed at as they only see in financial years not in long term strategic planning.
How much did it cost Taranaki the last time Maheonui hill fell away?

Oh, great! I was hoping it was going to be sweet riding to the Naki in the next few weeks... Does anyone know the condition of the road between Rotorua and Piopio via Benneydale?

I rode Hn to Wanganui and back yesterday (for a work trip:wari:), down via Awakino and back Parapara's. Both roads are a mess.
Did the same trip two weeks back and it was a blast (although that included Whanganui River road and a little side trip to Ohura) - this time was just hard work where i was expecting to have a bit of fun, especially when we had to wait while they spread fresh metal then they let us go through before it was rolled.
Took an hour to clean the bike last night and it is still covered in crap.

Put it this way, it is normally a two and a half hour trip from door to door from TA to NP and vise versa. Yesterday when I came back it nearly took me four hours! The road is a disgrace, there must have been at least a 1/4 of the way home was road works. Mind you it didn't help that a truck had stalled going UP Mt Messenger!

I guess then that if I have an attack of bad judgement and decide to visit Auckland over the holidays, I should travel via SH43 to Taupo and on north from there.
Guess I'd then be able to update y'all as to where the other roadworks are...

i know from about Mangakino through bennydale back towards TeKuiti is average, theres a couple of bits of roadworks but they have been sealed (still had pea gravel on them) but they were signposted. its the tarbleed you have to watch out for, if its a stinking hot day it gets ridiculous, and its fucken slippery as fuck, even on the parts that look ok the chip justs moves around under your tyres. if you can smell the tar keep your wits about you.
oh and watch out for the concrete patch on one of the corners taupo side of crusader meat works, all the tarseal has sunk around it, making it an awesome launch pad, unfortuntly when you land you might find yourself on the wrong side of the road, emmbedded in the grill of a truck.

Four of us went up to Kawhia on sunday for a ride, taking back roads from Piopio to Waitomo & 3 of us have just got back from Hamilton to get tyres fitted today. Road today was much better condition with sealing taking place but a good 30 minutes of hold ups for the normal 2 1/2 hour trip.

Seems like just because there is three days in a row without rain every idiot with a tar bucket and a stop/go sign gets themselves out on the road, how much is the bet that every single piece of mayhem is only half finished by the time school finishes and all the holiday traffic hits it?

Perhaps the above post explains your sign on name then haha, I know a dude who travells from Te Kuwiti to New Plymouth every monday morn at 6am, and makes it to work for 7-30 am, even in those conditions on an old 86 GSXR 750

Mind you I couldn't be bothered trying to get my head around the HN landing plates/proceedures etc. So i guess 4 wheels was a better choice!

The controllers at HN are pretty helpful to dumb ag pilots! So it's not too much of a problem.
After driving on that crap road the other day, the old Fletcher looks like the better alternative!
I've said it before, though, I'd much rather be wearing the Shoei helmet than the Gallet

against my better judgement,i decided to go for a ride to mokau today.
ya got that right pussy.fucken shit.my ride's now dust coloured.
i just don't understand why they don't finish one patch before starting another.but i guess starting 50 of them at once is the done thing when starting roadworks ...... at christmas time.

Mitchell Road (just west of Whakamaru) is just one wet layer of tar on a hot day. There is a thin strip of chip between the sea of tar, but its almost as slippery cause of all the soft stuff around/under it.
Eight Mile turn off through to Mitchell Road is good though :2thumbsup and from Whakamaru to taupo is ok too (but yes, watch out for the patch of concrete!)
The plan (apparently) is to get all of the works completed before Christmas (Tui).
The stuff in the Awakino Gorge is straight out of the Ministry of Works era...50kph signs where there's no roadworks, no signs on the corners where there is freshly thrown chip seal!
On the way back from Taupo the other weekend I managed to strike every bloody Stop sign on the way! All six of them!
(Still managed a decent ride all the same  )
Luckily the next time I'm heading back to Taupo (to see the Endurance Racing) will be in the cage and the time after that will probably be Pie Rower so no doubt there will be fresh road works by then!

mate, there's only 2 arrivals, 4 departures, or 2 instrument approaches (although the VOR was down for maint. today)
probably more like the 300' cloud base for most of the morning - even a fletcher going IFR* wouldn't have made it over the Kawhia gap....
