OK, I've been thinking about fun activities that I could do to get fit and lose some weight, and knowing myself well enough by now, if it's not something I enjoy or find fun, I just won't stick at it. I'm not much of a team sport type of person (not competitive so don't want to let the whole team down) and I really don't want to spend a crap load of money on gym equipment or a gym membership.
So I was thinking that I'd probably enjoy boxing/kick boxing or self defence lessons, something I could have fun doing, not overly expensive and learn something while hopefully getting fit and losing some kilos.
So anybody have any experience with this type of thing, i.e. done classes before and enjoyed or hated it? Do you think it would keep me motivated and help me get fit, i.e. is it fun and good exercise?
Cheers!

What about swimming?
I couldn't swim at all 3 months ago, taught myself in the first month. Its fun, low resistance, low intensity (once you learn to relax and get the breathing sorted) and generally for the win. Do try et!

I love to swim and do try to get to the pool, the only problem I have with it is the pool itself, all those bandaids floating about in the water, piss, snot and my local pool often has "Code brown" that closes the pool for half a day to be "cleaned" (dumping a shit load of chlorine in it is not cleaning it in my opinion!) But a fine idea thanks, maybe I should look at swimming in a different pool, like one that is closed to children!

Sounds cool, thanks. Definitely not looking at taking it up as a "sport" and entering competitions or anything, I'm not competitive, or violent (shut up Kendog), just want to get fit and lose some weight while having some fun and learning something. I also have weak knees, a dodgy hip and a bad back, so would hope that it may strengthen these areas so I have less issues with them. :)

Go Boxing!
Did French Boxing (same as english arm but you can kick with your legs/feet) for a couple of years: i loved it beacuse i was exhausted by the end of each session, you get muscles everywhere, and its excellent or your heart! One of the most complete sport and i could as well evacuate stress and all that energy in 2 hours. And sometimes, it occurs that you kick some boys'asses quite well (and the look on their faces and their hurted pride is actually pretty funny ;))

Bad point: teeth protection, bruises on legs and arms, and bleeding nose are not very sexy but ey!

Now that sounds like me! (Not the getting bashed up bit, I bruise easily...) That's what I'm thinking of, boxing that also allows you to kick. Cheers.

The idea of using my legs appeals as I have a soccer background and know that I lose weight easily when I use the major muscles in my legs and bum and think kicking a punching bag (or person) would be better for me than the impact of running etc as all that seems to do is make me "bulk up", not too attractive!
Also from riding my bucket I've noticed that I tend to not open my legs much on the bike, tending more to cling onto the tank with my thighs and find it hard to stick my knee out (knee down action) and thought that doing something that makes me open my legs may help my bucket racing a bit..... just a thought.

One bit of advice i'd give, is if your gonna wear a knee support, wear it under trackies or summit ! They look like a bullseye to whoever you may be sparring with !
Sounds like with all them ailments, swimmin would be better for ya !
Kick boxing training is prolly 50% full contact !
But no run of the mill dickhead be able to fuck wid ya after like i say 12 months

I'm willing to give it a go, if I stretch out enough before and after I may be ok. My knees and shit aren't too bad, they just play up occasionally, and I think a lot of that is due to being unfit and chubby! And if anyone kicks me in the knee it may motivate me to be a bit more "aggressive"!!!

I'll bring the gloves and train with ya!
There are several good training gyms around Welly and they're best place to go. They have different types of programmes available. Muay Thai is pretty full on but you can go at your own pace. http://www.gsw.co.nz/ is a martial arts gym in Mount Vic. They have a couple of different things taught there and do self defence classes. They also have weights and gym facilities for alternate training too.

The cheapest option is just to come round and grab the dogs - they'll give you some exercise...:chase:

what made me think of it is there's a little place behind Richard's Motorcycles in J'ville that has just opened and the sign says they do boxing and self defence lessons which made me think "hmmm, nice and close to home, would be more likely to actually go if I don't have to travel too far to get there!"

Savate (pronounced IPA: [savat]), also known as boxe française, French boxing, French Kickboxing or French Footfighting, is a French martial art which uses both the hands and feet as weapons and combines elements of western boxing with graceful kicking techniques. Only foot kicks are allowed, unlike some systems, such as Muay Thai and Silat, which allow the use of the knees or shins. Savate is perhaps the only style of kickboxing in which the fighters habitually wear shoes (savate being a French word for "old shoe").

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savate

I have done Muay Thai and enjoyed it. great for fitness.

But if you are after something that is fun to keep you interested, is non contact, and heaps of women do it, It will improve balance core strength, But most importantly is enjoyable. Capoeira.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira

Capoeira (IPA: [ka.pu.ˈej.ɾɐ]) is an Afro-Brazilian art form that ritualizes movement from martial arts, games, and dance. It was brought to Brazil from Angola some time after the 16th century in the regions known as Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo. Participants form a roda or circle and take turns either playing musical instruments (such as the Berimbau), singing, or ritually sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Less frequently used techniques include elbow-strikes, slaps, punches, and body throws. Its origins and purpose are a matter of heated debate, with the spectrum of argument ranging from views of Capoeira as a uniquely Brazilian folk dance with improvised fighting movements to claims that it is a battle-ready fighting form directly descended from ancient African techniques.

Have done kick boxing classes at a boxing gym in central Aucks, awesome fun!. They are a pure boxing/kick boxing gym. I am reasonably fit, but found muscles I never knew I had. It is a fun workout and you learn heaps. The mixture of exercises is fantastic, cardio, strength, and flexibility work made fun (is that possible?), and have I said that it's fun?

Just be weary about where you go, I had been to a few up in Aucks and alot of the people there were farken tossers, too serious, very competitive blah blah. Most boxing gyms give you a couple of free sessions for trial too, so visit a few before you decide hmmmmmmkay

Judo is farken cool.....you get to throw people around, there is not alot of kicking as it's all about unbalancing your opponent, getting them on the floor and making them tap out (and sometimes black out - teeheee)!! Better form of wrestling really.

This is true. I grew up swimming in the ocean, but I have to admit it doesn't do a lot for me these days (had a few bad experiences swimming in the sea) and always feel I should have someone with me just in case I get into trouble out there (it's also not heated!!)

What you have described sounds like exactly what I'm after! I've never really been too interested in martial arts as it always seems to me to be a lot about posing and yelling and mental stuff when all I want to do is get fit and have some fun (and learning how to kick someone's arse is a bonus)

I've done pretty much all of them, achieving black belt 2nd dan in some, here's my summation for your contemplation.

Judo: Best all round fitness, lowish risk of injury although mat burns are common, no intentional kicks or punches, builds strength, stamina and confidence. Self defence quota maybe 6/10, certainly improves awareness. Good choice for what you want I think.:apumpin:

Tae kwan do; Fitness and amazing flexibility, higher risk of injury but the stretching flexing thing could be just what you need. Self defence quota 8/10.:girlfight:

Karate in its many forms; semi and full contact, either way, high injury risk, not huge on fitness or flexibility but dependant on style very effective. Self defence quota 9/10.:brick:

Atemi Jujitsu; Everything in one bag, good fitness, good flexibility, fairly high risk of injury although full contact is not generally allowed. self defence quota 9.5/10. My personal favourite, combines all Japanese styles and running away is a valid option at gradings :chase: love it.:kick:

Kick boxing in its many forms; good fitness, high injury risk if you compete but the training will certainly burn off them calories. Self defence um..maybe 7/10.

Just my Opinion gleaned from a few years fighting in Pajamas. I think Judo or none competitive kick boxing would be ideal for you babe..enjoy. x

Hullo dahling! So....still trying to get fit eh? Good on you sweet :niceone:

Now, I have done a bit of kickboxing a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was with Jason Suti who happened to become NZ champion: awesome fighter and a heck of a nice guy.

I reckon you should try a few sessions and be sure to be comfortable with whom is teaching you. Take it slow and be very honnest about your limitations.

Given said limitations, I would personally stir you maybe towards Jujitsu instead. It is more about self defence and control of your movements, flexibility and strength. The Dojo I went to had a blind girl as one of their best students. It was awe inspiring to see this young woman intuitively (due to training) know where people were around her.

It is not so much about contact and more about using your opponent's strength against himself...and the training concetrates on making your movements very fluid, and gaining plenty of flexibility.

I have done a little but my beloved did 7 years of it. Playfights sessions between us are awesome I can tell you

Thanks for that, you explained it much better lol!
Wearing shoes (soft ones) helps soften the contact (in some way..ahem). There are two types of what i call french boxing: savate, where the winner is the one that you'll have the best fight tactic and the best technical movement; and what we call 'combat', where you 'fight', and the power of kicks and punches is pretty high...

i haved trained in muay thai for the last few years. its pretty intense and the injury levels are high dependidng on how hard out you go... worst injuy i had was 2 lost teeth when i wasnt holding the pads tightly

had a few issues with the bones in one foot as well. other then that just bruises and sore muscles

starting brazilian jujitsu soon so looking forward to that

one thing i would do is not commit to a contract in case you dont like it. there have been so many people at my gym that have a few leasons then given up - then find out it costs quite a bit to break the contract. have a trial period first

Boxing is an all over work out. I have been into it for 2 years now, some times going 4 or 5 days a week. I have not yet found something that is so incredbily exhausting. I agree, the blood noses etc are not always the most fun...but I just love sparring.

Cheers!

a few years ago,(4 i think) i went to a local kickboxing gym to get fit.i knew the head trainer,(a former nz champ, and commenwealth champion kickboxer,k1 ref,and he had also done pro boxing before muay thai) and got into training in his gym.

when i started,i weighed 110kgs,at a height of 5'8"
10 months later i weighed in at 82.5kgs :)

i've never been so fit in my life.it's great for your confidence too.
i like to see women get into it,cause unlike a lot of other martial arts, what you learn from the start, can be used on the street.(for defensive purposes)
and i think it's good if a women can kick a potential attackers arse :)

it would also be great for motorcross riders,as it conditions your body to hard knocks, and you learn to block out pain.

boxing is very good also, but it stands to reason, that kickboxing is better, because, from a defence point of view, you use more weapons.(ie:elbows, shin kicks, knees, spinning back fists, and grappling,as opposed to just punching in boxing).

from a fitness point of view,it's way better.you burn heaps more calories when kicking, then just punching, and the warm up,and warm down stretches help build a flexible hard physique.

a lot of muay thai/kickboxing gyms just train fighters,so if you don't want to get in the ring, you better ask the head instructor if they cater for fitness 1st.
however,if you do want to get in the ring, that's very rewarding too.

i really enjoyed it.it's worth a look.
good luck getting fit :)

Depends what you want really. Iv done a few different forms. For me boxing was the most physically demanding, its the most intense workout so if you are after fitness then this may be the best option. Some clubs are definately fitness based so anybody can enjoy it.

I did karate for a while, and this can be a good work out as well. Its primarily striking based form, which means it is strength based. If you come across somebody that does something else such as ju jutsu, or judo, your in trouble once you get taken to ground

Tae Kwon Do is primarily a leg based striking discipline. Very effective and can be quite demanding but builds up flexibility too. But like above, different disciplines and you have the potential to get owned.

You could do a mixed martial art. Although it doesnt have the 'spiritual' aspect for want of a better phrase, it can be full on and like the name suggests, incorporates many different aspects.

I now do Hapkido, which comprises of joint locks and throws, sparring and striking, and ground fighting, so similar to a mixed martial art but is korean based. The club that I go to is fairly informal and the ground fighting and sparring is a good workout.

Depends what area your in but the internet searching is your friend. I had a look at half a dozen places before I settled on the one im at now. It comes down to what YOU want and what YOU enjoy.

I think what I may do is ring around a few places here in Wellington (unless someone can recommend somewhere in particular to try first) and see what each place recommends for complete novices who are purely in it for the fitness and fun, learning aspect and try as many different things as I can. I don't necessarily want to learn to "fight", but hey if I learn something that may help me get the upper hand or at least give me time to run in a sticky situation then all the better!

Col, I'm free most evenings and sometimes during the day, so if you're keen to come with me to check some stuff out I'd be happy for the company.

Boxing's a great sport if you don't mind the high probability of head injuries.

And if you're going to mitigate that risk by not ever actually fighting, I don't quite see the point of the specific training.

If you're just into a sport for 'fitness and fun', why not choose a sport that's more about, uh... fitness and fun? As opposed to fighting.

But, hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

My main problem is I get bored of doing the same thing time and time again, if I'm learning and being taught something I tend to stick at things longer. Can you advise me on some sports that would be good for fitness and fun that I may not get bored of too quickly please.

Actually, that's not a silly idea. Someone else mentioned ballroom dancing, which interests me also, however I KNOW my hubby would NOT do that and so I'd have to dance with a bunch of sweaty unknown men... ewwwwwww. Unless Number One wants to come along and we can take turns at being the man :blip: I should warn though, I have two left feet, no rhythm and not the daintiest creature on earth, so maybe I should be the man!

Well, I find that road cycling fits that bill - all the basic attractions of motorcycling, freedom and fresh air etc, plus it serves the purpose of super-economical transport (particularly useful when one runs into motor vehicle licence issues!) and has huge strength and fitness benefits.

And you get to wear Lycra?

I wouldn't call that a benefit.

But if you don't want to be seen in lycra, you can always pop something baggy and stylish over it.

You do need the stretchy shit as a bottom layer to save your skin, though.

But, no, it's not compulsory to display it as shamelessly as I do.

Cheers. I do have a pretty good bike that I have only riden on the road once (rest of the time it's on a windtrainer) and do enjoy cycling. The main issue I personally have with that at the moment is that I'm really unfit and everytime I go for a ride I have to then cycle or push the bike up the bloody great hill we live on the top of, so until I gain some initial fitness it's really not going to happen. The other thing I've been thinking of doing is loading the bike in the car and taking it somewhere flat to ride for an hour and then take it home, which is an option, albeit a time consuming one. But thanks.

Yes, Christchurch is a far better town for beginner cyclists than Wellington.

I have a perverse and masochistic desire to cycle up to James Deuce's house sometime, y'know, just to see what it'd be like.

Perhaps I'll bring the bike next time I'm down.

On Deano's recommendation (Thanks Deano! :niceone) I contacted a Muay Thai kickboxing gym here in Welly and was put on the intake waiting list. Was contacted last week that we could now start coming so to come in and try it out, first lesson free, see how you go.
So on Tuesday evening Kendog, Number One and I rocked on up to the gym and were soon chucked in to doing squats, sit-ups, press-ups and a number of other exercises and stretches I haven't bothered with in quite some time!!
Then off we went to learn how to stand and walk Muay Thai style (Owwww, feel the BURN in the calf muscles! )
Then we were split into smaller groups and taught how to throw left and right punches and practiced on each other (with sparring pad things.... although there was one girl there that was just about knocking us over, took good mental note of her face so not to ever talk back to her on the street!!) and then into some kicks. Some more squats, press-ups and push-ups, cool down stretches and that was our hour done!! I was fucked!!! But felt great and had a ball doing it!!:wari:
So we're going back for more tonight even though my body is still aching, especially the front of my thighs (can hardly lower myself on to the loo, owwww!!). We're going to sign up for 9 months and see where that takes us. I figure that it's going to take some time to learn all the things we have to learn, so won't be getting bored, and by the time the boredom starts to set in hopefully the results will be motivation enough to stick with it.:)

Even tho' I stopped fighting a while back - we still go to the Muay Thai fights often.

My wife's boss is now the NZ Womans champ 55-60kg(?) weight division - its turned out because originally she couldn't think of anything worse than going to watch an evenings fights - but now after supporting her workmate a couple of times she loves coming along with me for the evenings - a bloody good family night out.

If you are ever up this way drop me a PM and I'll take you to one of the fight-nights (assuming there is a night on etc - there is most weeks).

Last one I was at I ended up talking with David Tua for most the evening - he's a pretty cool cat and he is certanly smarter than the o for 'orsum' comment.

Awesome going on the Muay Thai you guys, ive started going to boxing here in Upper Hutt (and its free) and have been absolutely loving it. Its definitely a gut buster of a workout but the time flys. Have also started skipping each night to help with the strength and coordination side of things plus the cardio benefit.

My plan is to drop 20kg(or convert the fat to muscle) this year, as fast as i can.
