:Oi:
Lets see the set up of all of our bikes, lets see how we have tricked them up and lets see what we can learn from each others set-up, get some comments, some help and some "holy shit, that looks great!"
There are a great number of talented guys and gals out there and I am sure we have passed each other on the roads sometime. It could also be a good thing to identify us when we whizz by....:clap:
Now that I am back in the land of the living I can complete my post...
There are two different Husaberg bikes there, one of them has a long range tank on it and I get over 300km to empty, which is great but I don't want to ride it that far in one hit of course....:scooter:
The KTM is probably my favourite go anywhere machine, great range and reliable as hell....
I remember someone saying somewhere what makes a bike good, is it reliability or durability? I would say the KTM is both, parts are cheap and it certainly is durable. Testament to this is the falls I have had lately on this machine:eek5:
It just bounces back, and in all cases better than me!

big f*ck off bash plate hides the engine from boulders, case savers on the sides too (Thumper Talk).
12v always-on accessory circuit to the dash, fused at 5A for running my bar mounted compressor (will do tyres to road pressure piece of cake - might put a heat sink on there though). Will also set up a GPS mount for my Garmin MAP76. Also considering a dual driving light set up below the main light. Nordie how's yours work out? Worthwhile?
Oh, and custom header pipe to help breathe.

heres mine.two stroke, two cylinders,YPVS(thats a power valve to you diesel riders)big 320mm fuck off front disc with a four pot caliper.(standard issue)currently running OEM bridgy trail wings, but can also do road tyres nicely due to the (aargh)18"front wheel/17"rear combo.
modifications?bugger all unless you count a remote voltage regulator to aid cooling(the first one fried itself cos yamaha decided to put them behind the radiator:doh:and a wee tweak to the tuning here or there thats secret squirrel.
more fun than a weasel down yer trousers and if anyone says its not an adventure bike i can tell you i have taken it to some pretty gnarly spots round banks peninsula.

Hey Sam, the can is just man-bling on the standard shock reservior - picked that idea up off Thumper Talk. Sadly, its void of the amber stuff...
The case savers have probably saved a few walks home by now - more so on the gear lever side which is notorious with its sharp-edged stock shift lever.
The bash plate was from a dude in Chch who made them himself and sold em on TMe. Haven't seen them for about a year though... only downside is noise - tends to bounce the engine sounds back up at you. Have had some mean rocks fly out from under it though!!! To get around the noise issue I put a yosh pipe on. Now I can't hear anything else and will be deaf by the time I'm 40:blink:. Roaring up a firebreak recently my ears were literally ringing at the top due to the trees either side of me. Needless to say, I have few riding buddies :bye:.

Pic of my bike with my better half just climbing on. Mods I've made are basically Renthal bars and moose hand guards, heated grips (still not wired up :bash:), folding tip on gear shift, wilbers shock and fork springs :wari: and probably other things but cant think at the moment. Bit rough to look at but works OK.

My DR650.... the tweaks and pics.
It came with that Bashplate already on it but I'd prefer the BnB one like we used on my partners DR.
It's got the IMS tank (I went for the natural semi transparent one) with a short one way valve attached to its fuel cap instead of the usual breather hose.
I stuck Pro Contour Taper bars on.
Bark Buster brand hand guards (long leaver model)
Hot grips are there,
RAM mount and GPS,
Home made windscreen, it's not perfect but does ok.
Headlight has one of those high output bulbs and for protection I put the thick stick on film on it.
Honda mirrors, one with the Transalp rubber bushed mount.
Fork Brace, Neoprene gators and DRZ400 front mudguard chopped up and fender braced to get it all working with the limited clearance you get when you put on the fork brace. Not sure I'd go there again.
Braided front brake line,
Extra Engine cover RTVed on left side of engine.
Cut small hole in CS cover so I can keep an eye on the sprocket condition,
Scott oiler with dual nozzle and lube tube.
Lube tube which feeds the scotty with extra capacity is in the toolkit holder.
Tank panniers are Wolfman, the place I got them online no longer exists. They do get in the way of my knees occasionally.
Rear rack is a Suzuki original and replaces the stock grab handles.
Givi E370 box is mounted on the rack.
Alloy bar is added to the side of the exhaust and keeps right side plastic off the pipe when panniers are in use back there.
Previous owner added a stone guard to the back of the oil cooler.
I've gone for 15 tooth front and 43 tooth rear sprockets.
Oh yes, almost forgot, the seat has had a bit of padding added. Once again not brilliant, but still seems a bit better than original.
I think that's all the tweaks, tuning is stock and it's slowly getting covered in Dusty Butt 1000 stickers.

Nah, thats the 5L heavy duty, from supercheap (nicer shape than the 'regular' 5L containers and more durable, for only about $10 extra). Gets me another 100kms, which makes longer trips doable. Thinking of including a couple of those aluminium drink bottles in my panniers as an extra back up now that I've got my 14t sprocket back.
Used a thick elastic loop to fasten it on, but that needed retying halfway through the trip because the elastic lost a bit of elasticity and it kept bouncing out on the rougher stuff.
Also taped a foam pad onto the base of the can so the plastic didn't scratch my precious bike... also stops a fair bit of rattle.
The REAL question is should I make a new warning label for the can thats in german? because everyone knows warning labels always look more important if they are in german...

... Thinking of including a couple of those aluminium drink bottles in my panniers as an extra back up now that I've got my 14t sprocket back.
Aluminium fuel bottles for camping stoves are very good. I have two 1.5 litre primus ones, and I am very pleased with them. Living Simply in Auckland sells them (they also have an excellent mail order service)
Drink bottles would probably work ok, but the primus bottles were a similar price, and I'm paranoid about unlabelled containers, fuel resisitant seals and being allowed to fill approved containers at petrol stations :sweatdrop
And carrying fuel in a red container boosts its octane rating

1 & 2: '02 TT-R 250 with Dunlop D606's, TAG bars, Zeta hand guards, B & B bash plate, Ventura sport rack and cheap carbon look indicators which are marginally less flappy and hideous than the stockers. It has also been dyno-jetted, for what little it's worth.
3 & 4: '96 Transalp, formerly Transalper's mount. Mitas E07's, Givi panniers and crash bars, R-Jays top box, Ventura light protector, the 'Transalper special' bash plate (not a patch on Nordie's awsome one), Daytona heated grips, Scotoiler and about $1000 spent on getting the suspension sorted at DAS. Credit to Nordie for pic no. 3, hope you don't mind me using it.
Not very bling, but both pretty capable in their own ways.

Have you thought about ditching the rediculus little tool bag and bolting a rack on in that spot instead?
The 2006 KLX250R had a rack there as well as the tool bag and it seems like it would be way more useful than that little tool pouch!

Had the camera on the wrong setting,so thats why it looks a bit blurry.
Things done to it....
Well it has a very very loud Two Brothers pipe, which I'm sure some will hear on DB1K 09.
Nicely ported head,if it's not, then Yamaha did a damn good job on it!
No right sidecover and half a left one (weight saving you see,but not done by me).
Hacked up front mudguard, back been cut for better airflow to engine, front been done because I'd imagine some person renting it crashed it years ago.
XR Indicators.
Emgo hand guards.
Airbox mod - Back taken off and the stupid vents underneath that suck hot air have been closed up.
Rebuilt rear shock, progressive branded springs in the front with 20w oil.
Trail Tech Vapor speedo.
Acerbis plastic tank.
And about 120,000kms thanks to it being a rental bike for 7 years of it's life in the early to mid 90s.

Hey Dion, I don't recall if I got round to thanking you for those faxes you sent me. Anyway they sure did the trick at the dealers and the rings and valve guide seals were replaced. Did an 1800 km run last weekend, bike got a serious workout keeping up with various fast bikes including a 950 KTM and performed really well, with the oil habit now well under control (the KTM used more oil than the killer)

Hey ridgididgi How do you find the adv compared to the KLR? It would be interesting to hear the comparison from someone who has actually owned the bikes. Obviously heaps more power but handling? Does the KTM feel heavy or lighter in comparison? Comfort? wind protection etc. If the KLR didn't have the probs would you have got rid of it after riding it for a few months?

I had the KLR for 9 troubled months. I got to ride 8000km's in total inbetween all the shit. What I decided was that offroad it was what I was after, but on road I wanted something capable of long road rides in between offroad.
Only really 2 choices, you guessed it the KTM or the Beemer 1200 gs. The beemer I felt was not for me. then I made the mistake of test riding a KTM 990. Never looked back after. Fitted me like a glove!
Yeah its not cheap, but it is quality. Same weight as the KLR. Of course the KLR is a 650 compared to the 990. the KTM is so well balanced. Great on road and kick arse off road. Comfort, well for me the KTM seat is pretty good for me.Better than the KLR.
Wind protection better on the KTM but still get abit of wind buffetting around the head but not to bad.
I think the KLR is a great bike for the price. The KLR will forgive you as well. The KTM you have to respect it. My skill level is rising, but at one step at a time.
I am very happy with where I am at now. Its been an interesting path. I was so wild for a while with the KLR and the knob of a dealer.thank goodness for the motor vehicle disputes tribunal.
Even when I ride the KTM to work it gives me a great lift! Its one hell of a bike!

Which one the, the "pink" :girlfight::bleh: one (XT600Z) or the scratched and beaten blue one (XTZ750).
Wifey and I did 300ish kms on the XTZ750 in the weekend and we knew all about it. Cramped and a little uncomfortable but it will have to do for the moment. Love the engine though. Super silky power delivery that just keeps coming. Great for hill climbs. Definitely a twin convert.

Here's my Baby on Bossu rd today.Love those Djebels. Had one very similar to that one, same year etc.
Ours had a small windscreen above the headlight (wasn't tall enough to actually deflect any wind though) and we put a BnB Bashplate on it.
In my opinion don't mess with the motor. We messed with the airbox and jetting and didn't like the results. Then no matter how hard we tried it wouldn't go back to running nicely when we had the mods reversed.:crybaby:
We'd propably still own it if we hadn't messed it up.

The green colour, and the front guard are sufficiently heinous that it's difficult to form an unbiased opinion about the rest of it.
Although I do like the chequerplate carrier/aerodynamic pod/whatever it is. I think teh sherp could do with one of those :sweatdrop

Still sorting the Husa FE600 out as a lightweight adventure bike of sorts.:headbang: Call me crazy. Crap range on tankful but nice 'n light with plenty of power.:niceone: Just slapped a Vapor on and looking for a larger petrol tank (or auxilliary petrol tank). Working to get it registered for the road as well.
In the meantime, there's always the GS to get around.

This is my bike set up for a camping trip (in other words a tent strapped to the back).
Not many mods, Scott oiler, Hepco .... crash bars (I got those after hitting a sheep in Awakino Gorge), and KTM hard luggage panniers.
Next mods, I would like a GPS unit, unfort the Akrapovic pipes are nice too pricey with the way the dollar has gone (although I know where I can get a set for free - isn't that right Crisis!!)

Hey, it's made by a bike manufacturer, I bought it from a bike shop, it has bike handlebars etc, it just happens to have a couple of extra "training" wheels :bleh:
Mods - Waltex box on front carrier, mesh headlight protector, and since those pics were taken I've made and fitted a gun rack to the handle bars :2guns:
It's a different kind of adventure riding, but still great fun in it's own way

heres my xr650r after 3 nights away doing the moleswoth, rainbow and Maungatapu
has a 16 L tank added but i think i may need a larger one. added a keyed ignition, zeta alloy bar guards and plastics, and a small luggage rack so im not tempted to overload the rear sub frame. also added a small fuel vent pipe that fell off on the rainbow so back the longer fuel tube
next on the list to get is a front fender bag so i dont have to carry a tube etc in my backpack , set of bar risers to make standing on the pegs easier and and maybe an alloy bash plate - not too sure on the plasitc one it has

My first adventure bike... 1986 Honda CBX250... from before touring on gravel/4wd roads had a specific name, or bike for that matter! I made a sheepskin solo seatcover, cut down from an old car seat cover. Tank bag and bicycle throw-over panniers completed the adventurisation. :2thumbsup The bike did have some off-road heritage; it has an e-start XR250 engine.

I found this old photo of my first adventure bike (well not really I had an XL175 and TC100 before that). This would of been 1980 - I think the XL350 was a 1976. I mostly used it for riding to University in Auckland but did a few interesting rides including 90 mile beach before selling it in about 1984. 20-something years later I've got the new version . Ya gotta compensate for old age and hair loss somehow...
