View Full Version : 24-hour fuel stations

I was thinking about some of the weirder members on KB (I may or may not be included in this) and got to thinking that it may be extremely handy to have a list of all towns that have 24 hour fuel stops. Some of us (I may or may not be included) ride at odd hours, and having a list handy of towns may save long night walks. The main centres will obviously have a lot, so they need to be on the list, but obviously the real aim is being in the middle of the country and being able to find out your best shot for gas.

Idea is, if you know of a town with a 24 hour fuel stop that isn't on the list, post it up, and I'll update the master list. From there, you're free to print it and/or carry the file on your phone etc. If you are using NZOGPS Maps on your Garmin device, the list is going to be sent to Zenbu, and their list of stations will be updated, so you will be able to search for stations nearby that are 24 hr.

Mods, I think this is the best place to put it, but if this goes according to plan, could we sticky it? Guys, try to keep the thread as clean as poss.

NOTE: It is vital that no guessing is made. You must be certain to the best of your knowledge it is indeed 24 hour.

See this post for latest file: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/87898-24-hour-fuel-stations?p=1130458304#post1130458304

Te Kuiti fuel stop is Shell Te Kumi at North end of town - this one is important as it's the only fuel stop between Hamilton and New Plymouth if travelling late at night.

I think it is important that where possible we list names and locations (especially in small towns) to make these a more valuable resource, as knowing there is a fuel stop in a particular town and actually finding it could be two different things.... :)

Hamilton has BP Tristram on Tristram Street in town as well as Shell Pukete at the North end of town (amongst others)
New Plymouth has Shell Waiwakaiho at North end of town (between Bell Block and NP) as well as Mobil, Shell, Caltex & BP stations on the one way system (both directions)

The list will need to be a compromise between simplicity for quick use, and detail if you need a helping hand to locate go-go juice.

Quite true. I am assuming most of us travelling at night are either using GPS or have local knowledge. For those with GPS, it will tell you where gas is, but can't make any decisions based on time and whether they are open (as well as sometimes having ghost stations). Local knowledge... well... that beats any list/gps.

If people would like a more specific location, it is best to provide the street address of it, and I will put it in.

I have split Hamilton into a couple of entries (direction and central) to assist, but don't want too many entries cluttering it up. Realistically, 10-15km in town isn't much compared to 30+km in a dark countryside

Warkworth Mobil is 24/7

wanganui. gull is 24 hours. follow road from south from waverly etc past the duck lake and down the hill and its right over the railway tracks. note: they are prepay after a certain time. not sure what that time is though. very handy cos its essentially on the main road through town... only a very slight detour required if you are desperate.

Thanks, was misspelt before, so had to make sure I had the right place.

I've also emailed the big brands, Caltex, Shell, GAS, BP, Mobil, Gull. So far, Shell has got back to me, and provided a list of all their stations and their numbers. Cheers  (I am not ringing every single flippin' station)

Manned or pay on the pump?

Fuckin oath. Hey you cunts no swearing in this thread eh.
What I actually meant was people trying to take it off topic, needlessly posting with nothing to actually contribute... hmmmm :Pokey:

The companies are slowly getting back to me, GAS only has one, and its in Auckland. Others are just giving me contact sheets for all their stations. Gull website may be useful, as they list the hours for each day of each station (none of the others do), but it means going through each one, and most have Force 10, no normal premium (so not too good for a lot of bikes)

In days gone by it was a real problem to find fuel at night . Heading north from Welly the last was at Kapiti and the next one was Waiouru if after 10.30 at night so you had to plan . It was (with the old road) 225 kms from Paraparaumu to Waiouru and my old 400 used to get 220 kms if i rode carefully. Always carry spare for the trip or suck some from a mates tank in an emergency. When Levin and Bulls came on line it was a blessing lol.
Good idea with this thread.

I plan to eventually have the entire list of all 24/7 stations in an excel sheet, but the companies are unable to provide a list of only 24/7, so its not a case of merging a few sheets. (I'll probably have to work backwards, have all stations country wide, and remove those that aren't 24/7)

Ultimately, I see a sheet with brand, address, city, country wide, but for the moment, a shortlist of centres/towns is better than nothing.

In Gisborne you can add the Caltex on Gladstone Road. The main road through town.

Locals may know better but the Shell Burger King and BP 2Go Kaiti are open very late and the BP does 98. The pump jockey at BP Kaiti said they were going 24hr after their refit but it will need confirming.

Hawkes Bay has the good ol' BP Express Service Station at Bayview.

It may be worth noting that some smaller towns used to run a roster system whan at least one petrol station was open at a particular time. Wairoa was like that years ago.

Further success tonight. Despite most companies coming back saying they don't have details on 24/7 status, I have found some of the companies list it under advanced details, so it is possible to gain a lot this way (and soooo fun bringing up each one and pulling the details from it).

So far, I have put in Caltex, GAS, Gull, with Shell to come. The xls file is attached to the first post. Feel free to check it and give me any feedback, as I have my suspicions (eg, I could have sworn the Gull in Tairua was closed on Thurs in the early hours).

With the companies unable to provide info, its going to be real fun continually keeping this knowledge up to date, and the first post will have the latest file.

I'll continue to keep tracking stations in two ways at the moment, while the spreadsheet is not complete, and then switch to the spreadsheet once it has all companies.

I've also worked on the excel sheet, adding in Shell. There are some BP, Mobil, Pak 'n Save, but that is a work in progress. Next is tackling the posts, to make sure those are present in the sheet.

Currently 260 stations are listed, please feel free to run through it, and check. Its been quite hard adding them, as the excel file and the website on shell don't match, stations exist but the shell website doesn't show them etc, so its possible there are errors on this list, but hopefully over time it will become more accurate.

Mobil and BP both on Rangitiki street in Palmerston North and close to one another are both 24hr, BP is also a Wild Bean Cafe. As you come into Palmy on SH3 and go over the ramp you can't miss them.

The BP is better as it has digital gauge for the air so you get the exact amount of air your tyres need. Don't get air from any Caltex station here as they're way out.

When you say limited fuel, could you clarify? This could be a factor. Similar to my listing of Force 10 on relevant gull sites, as some bikes will not like force 10. Some people's bikes would need certain fuels, ie, if the station only has 91, I would make a note of that.

Sheet has been updated again. Star Marts removed as I realised they were open 24 hours, but didn't sell gas (real useful that). Phone numbers have also been put in for a lot of the Caltex stations now.

Can I get more information for the following towns:
Waiouru - I have a Shell on SH1, any more places?
Amberley - whats here?
Kaikoura - What is the marine one called? Shell West End Motors?
Invercargill - whats here?
Murchison - which one is 24 hour eftpos?

Other than that, all those in posts 2 and 3 have been loaded into the spreadsheet.

I have to gripe about the lists the stations provide, and their websites. Its inaccurate, often not enough information (mobil simply doesn't list numbers - hell, waipukurau is even listed under Taranaki).

On the flip side, Caltex contains a fair bit, and you can simply ask for 24 hour, bp, you have to enter a region, but bp spreadsheets are probably the most detailed (except for 24 hour status :slap:)

edit: 260 stations now listed.

You would think it would be a good idea aye?

First, you realise that their lists aren't very accurate (ie, the phone number is wrong for the site - rendering the most extreme form of contact in doubt)

then....

they tell you they don't keep any data on which stations are 24 hour. Even Caltex told me this, but its available on their website if you dig a little. Can find it on Gull, but you have to look through every site (which I did).

Last time I went through Tekapo they said their 24hr eftpos wasn't going to be around much longer as it wasn't worth it for them to do the upgrade for the new chip cards. Dunno when this happens but it might cause more than a few eftpos outposts to close.

Like the one at Kingston GAS.

Omarama Mobil probably does enough to keep operating.

Queenstown has 24hr servos in case you were wondering. Good pies and coffee.

Wanaka shuts sometime late evening and it's fuelcard only after that.

zooter, if you know more details, can you let me know, as I am also going to be giving www.zenbu.co.nz a copy of the sheet, to update their Points of Interest file, so the list will be useful for those running NZOGPS maps, hence I need to know specifics.

Tekapo is not on my list. GAS, I only have Great South Rd (GAS confirmed it was their only 24hr station) and Lewis Pass, which is eftpos at pump (just loaded into the sheet).

I don't have any stations in Omarama on the list, and I have one 24hr Queenstown station, Shell Queenstown, 846 Frankton Rd.

I am not listing fuel card only stations, as its too specific for many people, and I have limited fields to place information without the sheet being too difficult to use. They need to be manned or eftpos/credit card, as the vast majority of people have that.

The sheet has been updated, in the first post as usual.

Yep, it will be sent to Zenbu (Sam). Spoken to him a while ago, when I was first compiling the list, and he has no problems with the xls format.

Easier than doing each by hand anyway, I've already done over a hundred other POI edits by hand...

2km from statehighway 1 are 2 caltex 24 hours pumps .

Both pumps are easy accesible.

This one is actually called Otematata Fuel Supplies, if you needed to know, but the info has been added to the sheet.

Southbay, just 500m out of Kaikoura's citylimits is the turnoff to Southbay.

Thank you for the detail. This one was much harder to pin point, as Caltex doesn't list it, it's not listed in the GPS maps (well, it will be when my updates take effect) but all in all, a hard one to enter when precision is necessary.

If someone has a GPS, it would be real handy to get the co-ordinates of the two pumps, but I've done it roughly for now, based on description (alternatively, for those with zenbu accounts, head on over and search for "caltex south bay" - which will bring up the two pumps, and you can update their location).

Sheet is updated in Post 1.

I rang "McKeown Petroleum"...."Otematata Fuel supplies" is out dated information!

The information I gave you is correct.

They also advise:

"Caltex NZ" fuel cards will not work there! (a Caltex NZ generated problem)

"Caltex" fuel cards issued by "McKeowen Group" will work there!

Otherwise as I said earlier: EFTPOS, VISA etc and Fleetcards will work!

This (24hr) service is a recent establishment since the previous closure of the "local" service station and is proving more popular as people are becoming aware of it.

McKeown Group Oamaru is: 03 4331022. (Oamaru is on the East Coast, 100km away from Otematata.)

The number of fuel stations that have closed up in the South Island over the last ten years is amazing!

Distances between fuel stops down here seem to be much longer than they are in the North Island.

This could be a bit of a trap for bikers on tour and it gets worse after hours!

We do a lot of riding late at night, getting home after watching sports activities etc! (grandkids)

The Tiger's big tank (24 ltr) and good fuel economy helps and we enjoy riding the bike as much as we can all year round.

The information that you are accumulating for us is invaluable.

Gremlin
10th June 2009, 15:07
Yep, there are far more areas in the South Island with limited fuel, than in the north. I guess the South simply has more areas that are remote. And if there is fuel in some places (eg Haast) its incredibly expensive.

In contrast, my KTM drinks fuel faster than medium sized cars, and has a 19L tank, so the information is crucial for me too :sweatdrop

I would probably recommend a Garmin GPS, with the open source NZ maps. If you spot errors, like the GPS saying a gas station exists, when it doesn't, it can be updated via www.zenbu.co.nz (the open source maps pull the point information from that site). It means that once you have noticed one is closed, updated the info, and the gps has the new info, you're good to go.

Way better than fighting a big company, that won't update its information

Gremlin
25th June 2009, 23:41
Ok, the list of 260+ stations has been provided to Zenbu, who has kindly batch updated all the stations.

This will filter down to the NZOGPS mapset during the next round up POI updates. Searching fuel for "24hr" should yield the particular stations that have 24 hour access.

Now, can anyone provide more details on this service station: http://www.zenbu.co.nz/entry/1153981-caltex-hutt-road

You can use streetview on the website to see it, but not even Caltex lists the station, so I can't find phone numbers etc, and searches reveal the old hutt rd station in Alicetown...

Gremlin
5th July 2009, 01:18
Just another update.

The updates have definitely been applied to the NZOGPS maps, the latest release now features all 24 stations as having "24hr" on the end of their name.

The idea of this is, wherever you are, bring up a search for fuel, and simply ask for "24hr". The gps will then search for the closest 24hr stations. Easy aye?

Keep the updates/revisions coming as and when you come across them, and I will aim to keep everything up to date (spreadsheet and gps data).

This is a secondary list, and yes, best effort. The best option, and what I use regularly, is the NZ Open GPS Mapset. All POI are maintained through zenbu, which is community driven, so anyone can help keep things up to date. Regularly (monthly or more frequently I think) the zenbu data is incorporated into the GPS project.

This is more for those that don't use GPS'.

It's as up to date as the information provided by others (as I can't know when stations open, close or adjust their hours).

I'd suggest in the first instance you use a Garmin GPS and the NZ Open Street Maps. All points of interest are taken from the community project Zenbu (www.zenbu.co.nz) which anyone can edit after establishing an account (email address and password). I note 24hrs in the opening hours field and this is dragged through to the maps. Anywhere you are, search for fuel in the gps, put in the key phrase "24hr" and you'll find the closest 24 hour stations. Naturally they may be unmanned, and it's only card facilities.

Failing that, buy a bike with a 600km+ range

The flaw in that plan ... is that on the South Island west coast ... is not possible to travel at a consistent open road (speed limit) speed. Some portions tend to chew into your fuel reserves more than others ...
40 km's south of Hokitika and you have no cell coverage. (even on a good day) Limited coverage at Fox and Franz.

Was in the news ... lines are fixed ... well connected for now. A proper fix later when they fix the bridge. (Watch the news on tv tonight [tv1 anyway])

Been txting back and forwards with my brother up there today, and it sounds like it is fairly messy up there. The river behind his place has been threatening to spill over.:sweatdrop

In late December I askex Caltex "Would you have a list you could give me of the location of all your 24hr stations throughout New Zealand?"

Today I got this:

Hi Stephen

Apologies for how long this reply has taken… it is not an easy list to gather together especially with so many staff on leave throughout the country.

This should be a current list of all 24 hour sites that trade under the Caltex Brand in New Zealand.

Hope this is what you were after.

...

Cheers
Kind Regards

I suppose that a number of service stations have changed their hours since this list was first composed.

Would I be best to contact each oil company and ask for an up to date list of their 24hr outlets? or is there an app or website with this stuff listed?

I'm looking just at the North Island.

The date in the filename is a timestamp (YYYYMMDD).

No, I don't actively update it, so unless someone gives me some data, nothing happens

I'd suggest updating details on Zenbu, and the data from that website gets fed through to the NZOGPS maps (which is then searchable).

If I remember rightly, some companies listed 24hrs or not on their website, so that was how the initial data was compiled.

BP is open till midnight but if anyone is ever stuck for gas in Kaikoura, at the boat ramp in South Bay there is a 24hr (Eftpos or CC) pump with 91 (and Diesel). Has saved my bacon a few times.

Man do I wish I had known about that (or it existed at all) when I went through there on my RG years ago. Reserve somewhere down Greta valley and fumes when I rolled in to Amberley.

I'm quite certain that was the most polite hour of RG riding in history.

What about Taumarunui? I assume there would not be a 24hr stn but is there an after hours eftpos pump there?

@ awa355, The new BP down the bottom end of town (next to Mick D's) was 24/7 when it first opened some years back.

Don't be put off by using those unattended roadside credit card only pumps, the one here is always 5-6c per liter cheaper than any service station we would use. Granted no a huge saving but they are 24 hours.

Those 24 hr roadside stations can be a sight for sore eyes, esp when you don't know how far it is to the next town and your on empty in the middle of nowhere (left the petrol station haven of Mangakino:shifty:)
No map, no idea of whats ahead or how far.
Corner 3 Waipapa Rd, SH 30/ Whakamaru Rd - met up with a nice local who informed me of a mbike tourist killed on a BMW earlier just down the road to Benneydale- suggested that I was careful - in the shady areas
-38.390586, 175.759678 - its fully automated
I said yeah ok thanks (no idea of where Benneydale was at that time) Funnily enough came back that way the next day through Benneydale and found the station again - connected the dots in my mind.

However, I like to support local communities, Had I known how far it is to Whakamaru AND there was a petrol station there I would have waited - experience I guess.

PS - I can recommend Kaahu Rd, behind Whakamaru as a nice gentle way of getting to Taupo via Poihipi Rd

When you are unsure as to where your next fuel stop will be ... gas in the tank is always good insurance ... regardless of the price.

Hindsight is never the best way to screw your mind ... but many still will.

I now take a little bit of mbike type oil - just in case (yeah I did need it but I had it with me:Punk: ). Those 24 hr stations don't stock it. :shit:

http://www.bp.com/en_nz/new-zealand/find-nearest-bp.html?gclid=CO_D6LD6gcgCFRWUvQodlbQC4Q I was going to check it out this weekend but the weather forecast said rain, rain, rain.

These petrol stations and the web - so much better info than it used to be.
I remember travelling with the old man in a ute down to wellington from Akl, he had a couple of drums filled with petrol to get there and back, just in case the stations were closed...and they were, back in the day

Hi all,
Not sure if this is the best place to post this - I do a lot of long distance endurance riding, and I'm always having to plan trips around petrol stations that are open in the middle of the night or early hours of the morning. To help me I have compiled a list of all petrol stations that are open 24 hours where petrol can be purchased with either EFTPOS or Credit Card. Some of these are 'pay at pump' unmanned stations. Some of them only sell 91 octane.

It's presented as a Google Map and can be found here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1SS-SPnGdTsTRKOTVcaGu-U5NfF0&hl=en
(https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1SS-SPnGdTsTRKOTVcaGu-U5NfF0&hl=en)
If you find any mistakes please let me know, via this post on my website: http://www.thinman.co.nz/24-hour-petrol-stations/

Cheers
