While many may be thinking about Christmas and spending time with families, or perhaps gearing up for the next big bike event of the summer, Tauranga's Ben Thomasen lies injured in hospital. According to reports, he's lucky to be alive after his chilling high-speed, high-flying crash at the Timaru round of the motocross nationals a week ago.
Ben said it was, "the scariest crash ever... I've never flown so high or so far. I had arm pump and I just couldn't back off the throttle."

Kawasaki Team Green manager Mike Cotter is organising support for Ben and anyone wishing to donate is encouraged to do so. "Ben came off early on in race one in a horrendous crash where he sustained internal injuries and has also broken his back, pelvis, elbow, wrist and both ankles," said Cotter. "He shattered a vertebrae in his lower back which has also nicked his spinal cord and at this point has minimal feeling in one leg, the doctors are hopeful that this will heal in time and we are keeping our fingers crossed. He underwent surgery on Sunday night to correct the internal bleeding and is scheduled for another later this week for his ankles. Ben is in Christchurch Hospital where the doctors expect him to be for at least three months before he can be transferred closer to home in Tauranga. I would like to thank everyone for the support shown since the accident. As Ben is going to be away from his family and friends for so long I am sure that he will appreciate phone calls, texts or visits if you are in the area."

Mike has opened a bank account where any donations to help Ben and his family through this difficult time can be deposited. Alternatively, if you see Mike around you can also hand them personally to him for banking.

That must have been a huge get-off. So much damage is a lot to deal with all at once. Not going to be much of a Christmas for Ben or his family. Stuck a few $ into that support fund, ACC not going to cover family travel/accommodation expenses.

Message to pass on (Thanks Choppa):
Hi Ben, I've never met you but very sorry to hear of your injury. Your already proven winner's attitude will stand you in good stead over the next few months, so hang in there. You have a lot on your plate at the moment - just take it one day at a time.

Could you please pass on our very best wishes from Nicola (with the camera) and family. I’ve already messaged Ben on Facebook but would like him to know that we are thinking of him at this time and praying everything will be ok.

I have started another thread in the hope that we can get LOTS of people to come.
