View Full Version : Help from any Oz military bikers regarding joining the Australian Air Force.

I'm interested in joining the Australian Air Force (since the Ozzie's actually have a decent Air Force where I can use my hard earned university degree) but I'm not too sure if I am able to join from NZ without actually living in Oz at the moment.
I was wondering if there is anyway to get through the selection process and get a job offer without moving to Oz yet?

Thanks for any help.

What did the Ozzie airforce have to say about it?

I haven't called them yet since I don't really know what what their number is and their website does not have any email addresses to ask. They did sent me an information pack today but that only has their number on it.
I might try and call later if I have no luck contacting someone directly. There is nothing on their website saying how to apply from outside the country/ if it is possible to.

21 minutes between your first and last post... think you'd have the answer by now if you'd rung them?

Nationality

You'll need to be an Australian citizen or hold Permanent Residency Status with the intention of gaining Australian citizenship once you are eligible.

No idea what the academy is for... you'll have to figure that out ;)

/edit: Well bugger me.... http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/recruitmentCentre/faq/OverseasApplicants/

Do I have to be an Australian Citizen?

For full time or part time entry, citizenship requirements will be satisfied if you are an Australian citizen or a permanent resident eligible for Australian citizenship.

NZ citizens can be considered as a permanat resisdent. on the armed forces application. That was from the mouth of a recruiter I met in Darwin. It is up to certain individuals though. Same deal as for the Aus police, Army and Navy.

As for living there, I don't know. I presume the same deal as someone who does live here, you get barracks accomodation. Best bet is to ring them. Would be surprised if you are the first to ever ask this question.

Good luck bro.

Thanks for that. I have emailed Australian immigration to see what their take on the matter is so will hopefully get it sorted out.

As far as I know though. You will not be able to be deployed until you have Aussie citizenship, and thats a long and painful process.

Check that though, thats just what I knew from joining the NZ army

My cousin wasn't allowed to join the Australian Army until he had lived in the country for 2 years.

There are more catch's than that i would think, unless you have a residential address expect lots of PITA's,without one you will not get something as simple as a drivers license.
A lot of things here rely on being a resident.
I would think applying for even a basic job would mean being here.
IMHO... Do not think Australia will be exempt from the World going ons, things are slowing down big time in the resources sector, armed forces who knows, time will tell within the next 6 months.

lol, you have a degree, that would imply that you want to be an officer of some sort... and the fact that you give a shit about what aircraft they have, you probably want to be a pilot too?

they like people with leadership, forward thinking ability, and the ability to follow basic instructions.

If they expected you to get your answers from somewhere else, they wouldnt put their phone number at the end of the adverts.

Its too much of a bugger trying to get into the Oz defense force as I have just found out from the high commission.
However I'm trying my luck with RAF since NZ citizens are able to get in without many probs.
