Hi all,
My partner had his helmet stolen off his bike outside 81 Carlton Gore Road, Newmarket at about 10:30 this morning.
It's a bit of a manky old thing, and more of an inconvenience than a cost, but I reckon hemet-theiving-scum are probably also bike-theiving-scum so it's worth keeping a lookout.
Description:
Shoei full-face
Matt black
Iridium (mirror) visor
2XL
It's unlikely that a helmet of this size will actually fit any random passer-by so the over-large size might be a clue that it doesn't belong to the person who's got it.
Thanks!

If I left a $100 note on my bike then walked away from it do you think it would still be there when I returned?????
:Pokey::Pokey::Pokey:
Hope you get it back, but that was a bit daft....

Yeah well I didn't say it was a smart thing to do...
On the other hand, I come from a time & place where you literally could leave your front door unlocked when you went to work each day. My cousins on their farm didn't even have a door key. Any time of the day or night you could just turn up, go inside & make yourself a cup of coffee (instant, with two sugars and full cream milk straight out of the bucket). Ah yes, those were the good old days.

Jeez, I'm always paranoid about my bone domes, never leave them and prefer to carry them with me even with the chore of having to do so. I see them on other bikes, but always had an internal shudder since there are great unwashed miscreants who can't respect people's property.
Karma and Sod and Murphy will hopefully deal to those scum sucking, bottom denizens of society :oi-grr:
On the brighter side, shopping for a new lid? :msn-wink:

Yeah... trouble is he's been shopping for a new lid for a while now and it's not easy! When you have a 2XL head your options are unfortunately limited. Also he has a Shoei-shaped head so his options tend to be quite expensive. But yeah, that was a risk he took when he left his helmet on the bike.
Personally I would be worried about someone messing with my helmet and accidentally dropping it, or just bumping the bike & knocking it off then putting it back where it was. You would not necessarily know that the safety of the helmet had been compromised - and that might turn out to be very important one day.

Can you claim on contents insurance?
Probably. But...
a) we would lose our no-claims status and
b) we have a $300 (I think) excess and
c) the helmet was a few years old and probably reaching the end of its useful life and
d) it wasn't actually locked onto the bike - it was just hanging on the helmet hook. (I think he was hoping nobody would notice that there was no lock on it.)
Which makes it a bit hard to justify to the insurance company that they should pay for a new helmet.
This thread's just more about "if you happen to see some dodgy looking guy wearing a helmet that fits this description and is way too big for him, please bash him on the head with a shovel to make sure it was worth him taking the helmet."
Thank you very much.

:bleh: Yeah, thanks for that. I think one of the things he's upset about is now people will be able to recognise him as he's riding along and he won't be able to hide behind his Iridium Cloak of Anonymity any more.

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

You could ask Helen Clarke if she has a spare one, or even the one she wore when she stopped the springbok tour and she has a BIG head.

Thanks for the tip, Big Dave. Santa Claus always brings me Motomail vouchers so I'll let him know about that deal.
(BTW Thanks Santa... You know I'll make it worth your while...:blip:)

Sucks to get your helmet taxed but I gotta ask, is the helmet hook on your partner's bike a lockable one?
As in, it's sitting under the rear seat (like my 929) and when I hook my helmet to it (with the strap attached) and close it, it's permanently attached and locked, unless people got nothing better to do and they had a pair of sissors/knife to cut the strap.

No, it's not lockable. It's just a kind of a hook thing. To be secure he would have had to have taken his helmet into the meeting with him, along with his jacket, papers, etc etc that he was already carrying so I'm guessing that's why he ended up leaving the helmet with the bike.
I've seen those under-seat locking ones and I think they're a very sensible idea. I don't have one on my bike either, so I just end up carrying my helmet with me wherever I go. I wonder if you can buy those locking ones anywhere...?

I have a "Shoei" shaped head.. and went for a HJC, CL-ST, even better fit than my last $800 shoei at $199 from Cycletreads..
