No Trace it is just an extra way to fundraise. It will be enough to come along and beef up the numbers and contribte by buying your badge and T-shirt. I think they only take cash though, so make sure you bring some.

I'd like to come on this ride, but I'm new to all of this.
What are the rules and regulations of a big ride like this?
Can one just turn up on the day and ride?
Are there any special things I ought to know first?
I haven't ridden in a large group of bikes before, or a slow convoy.
Ixion
19th February 2009, 15:43
There are no rules or regulations, other than the usual road rules and follow the directions of the marshals.
Just rock up reasonably early (:argh: - absurdly early start time) and wait until people start rolling out. Follow the mob, and just keep in your place.
Usual courtesy stuff, and keep an eye on your mirrors.
It may not be so slow! Ride before last I near the rear, doing 130kph with a cop behind me signalling to go faster !

Sponsorship isn't necessary! Just turn up and ride. Bring some cash ($20 or so should do it) and buy a badge and whatever other merchandise is around. Most excellent fun! :woohoo:
I will be there - I have been on the ride every year since before I got my bike! [I cheated - the first time I was a pillion.]
My advice for first timers would be to be courteous and just look after yourself. There will be the odd weirdo who will decide they need to push through the middle of the entire bunch, or squeeze between you and the person next to you :argh: but don't let them bother you. Just look ahead, allow enough following distance, maintain a consistent line and let everyone else look after themselves.
There will be a wide variety of speeds during the ride. On the motorway you will be going fast - slow - fast - slow. There tends to be a bottleneck at the Wellesley Street off-ramp and a bit of a squish at the end when everyone's getting sorted in the car park. Just take your time and don't get distracted by the presence of all those other bikes!

Ill be there.
Was a poor turn out last year. seems the majority of auckland bikers were scared of a bit of drizzle or just too lazy.
And the KB turnout was shocking. Not many of us at all.

People ....WTF. The nationals are on at Puke the same day as the Westpac ride. We have a website here that maybe could help you co-ordinate dates.
So why dont you organisers use it?
Actually to the organisers I am happy to collect funds at Puke if you think it is appropriate

How do you know who was a KB member? Nobody did a roll call that I know of (or maybe I was asleep in the back of the class at the time...)

There were quite a few, actually. The weather first thing in the morning was definately not the nicest, but it held off.
Who rigs the prize draw at the end? I left empty handed, but others did quite well! (Good on them!)

Last year the thin blue line were blocking off the onramps while the bikes all went past at 130.... telling us to hurry up...! Not so sure road legal is a requirement...

Take the karaka turn off, be there around 8:30... then choose any one of the 1,000 or so bikes that'll pass you...
seriously - you'll be sweet
By the southern motorway by Papakura ;)

Heading south on the motorway take the Karaka off ramp, turn right at the end and go across the motorway. The entrance is just to your left after you get over the MW. There will be people there to direct you.

Hope there was a lot of money raised. Sucked that the T Shirts and badges ran out. That was the only down side. Also traffic changing lanes in front of bikes and forcing bikes around.

To the kind gentleman who bought a button on my behalf and gave it to me because I didn't have cash - was going to get cash at a money machine and get one at the other end but they ran out - I just wanted to say Thanks again, and I did make a donation anyway later on in the day.
I went on the ride and didn't get a Teeshirt, same reason. If there is another batch being done, how do I go about getting my name put down and paying for it?
Cheers Richard, hope you're recovering swiftly, they can't keep a good man down aye. :ride:
