Oh wow - Comstar wheels, choice. The 400 is so much better than the 250,which weighed the same and went even slower. That's the US model they called the Hawk, the Euro one looked different and was probably called just a CB400 and some meaningless Honda suffix. They went like a Honda 400cc twin, which was pretty good, and handled ok at the time too.Three valves as per Honda technology of the day.If there was a 500 version I'd be pretty keen....the 400 weighed in at 500cc territory, and the 100cc would make it a real bike.

The engine evolved into 450cc or there abouts. The only model we saw here with the 450 donk was the Rebel but it was put in a chassis similar to the earlier GS500. Also a 350 veraint of this for some markets. The twin came out as an automatic model too.

My second bike was a CB400T I bought new. Went well with no real issues.

Edit- The CB450s/350s chassis was quite a bit different to the GS.-my bad.

The one I am looking at (above) has had an engine rebuild also.

Shiiiiiiiit CB400T, my bro had one of these (in black) in the early eighties, he got it from Bill Russell Honda in Mt Eden.
Of course I was the slack-jawed pain-in-the-arse little brother so if I really wanted to hang out with him and 'the bike' I got to wash it!

Sorry, was too young then to be able to help you now, but just had to pipe up with my memory fart.

I came across a really ratty one in dunedin years ago, no lights, open pipes.
He gave it the big rev at the lights, I was on the NSR (2up tho), said to my mate,"hang on, I'm gonna smoke this cunt......"
Fuck did he give me a fright, like he was launched from a cannon I had to give me bike a real hidin to take him.
I learnt a lot about ratty bikes that day......

Oh Maha, that thing is cool, I had a mate in the 80's that had one. At the time I had a newish CB250RS that could ride circles around it but it was still a reasonably quick machine and ultra reliable.

Hope you get it.

Oh, cool man. I don't want to piss of Magua, but I prefer the CB400Ts in looks at the very least. The CB400N (Superdream -- is that what you were talking about, Motu?) is very similar, just a different set of clothes I think. One or two minor differences in the engine, but still the same 3-valve twin.

I was reading stuff just recently in a book about them... the 250s are lardy and horrible, and nobody liked the 400s because they replaced the CB400F (the Four), which was a gorgeous, tiny little screaming gem of an inline four. Even though the new twins were faster and better in most ways, they were a bit square-looking and bland and didn't have that same delightful CB400Fness that makes me want to take one to bed -- so even though they were very capable, they weren't well loved at the time. Still sold shitloads though, didn't they.

Comstars, bleugggh!

Get it :D

That's not the same animal -- earlier generation, from the CB350F/CB400F/CB500F/CB550F collection. I think Honda only developed the 3-valve twin up to 450cc.

I did a Google Image search for that and instead turned up this horrible monstrosity -- 10 points to the first one to guess what it is --

Well it's not fair when you lurk around, is it! :D

Apparently even the 250 could outperform it. What's so hard about shifting gear anyway?

Looks very similar to the CB350 twin drum, which was period so would probably just bolt up -- however it looks like it's ventilated in the picture, and I don't think any CB350 came out with a ventilated drum, they just moved to a disc eventually.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind something like that for my RS, still trying to get hold of a TLS front end somehow, but nobody's got anything :(

That CB400/4 is sex.

I had a CB400T Dream in the 80s. From memory the Euro model I owned had lower bars than the US. The Super Dream had come out so I was able to get the Dream for a song.

I put a Givi screen on and had soft luggage made for it 'cos nothing I found would fit. Back when speeding wasn't a crime ranked up there with animal molesting and treason it would happily sit on 90mph all day.

The only down sides were the ignition coil and plug units and the quick rot exhaust.

It was good bike (not a great one) and did everything a poor student could ask. It all came to an end when I hit a cow. The insurance co. offered me the wreck and a chance to make some money but I did not want it back. I bought a 400/4 with the proceeds and never regretted it.

Hope that helps.

Two things......
I think the bike in question is fucken' cool.
I also, dont need another bike.
If I end up with it, I might let it go the highest bidder on here, after a month or two...

Edit: Been outbid....someone wants it more than me and is ready to hand over $2k
Edit Edit: ...owner stoped the auction, now needs the bike.
