Can't decide whether to fit Pirelli Diablos or Metzler M1 Sportec to Ducati M900.
Only open road weekend rides and South Island tours,
anyone had experiance with either
Cheers

I've been running M1's for a couple of sets as they replaced the Z3's. I'm dying to try the Diablo's for my next set (the 200/50 is now available) mainly because of the reviews they got for wet weather performance and general stickability. With 160bhp at the back wheel, I'm often struggling for traction and the M1's have seemed to be the best around for my needs, although I thought the Z3's were fractionally better for grip in the wet.

figjam, you must go through tyres faster than a very fast thing! I heard a story about a bloke that bought a ZX12R new and was determined to get good mileage out of the OEM rear, so he took it easy......but only got 3000k....while running in......
Is that for real?

If you choose the M1s, we've still got some of these left.

I was told that the Diablos are quite soft, so you won't get good mileage out of them (but then that should make them quite grippy).
I would check out some Ducati forums and find out which is the "approved" tyre. Wouldn't want to get excommunicated from the Ducati owners tribe for fitting something deemed unkewl... Seriously, feedback from other Mostro owners is the way to go. I was on a VFR forum and everyone raved about Bridgestones/ I thought it was all just peer pressure and hype till I tried them for myself.

I am just about to replace the Diablo on the front - it has lasted 9000km (alot of it down South) and would last couple more thousand kms if i kept going only on straights !
I have been very impressed with the tyre in both wet and dry
Have a metzeler z4 on the back and it seems great - am thinking of getting a z6
I'm not too sure that the m1 would be a good choice for the harsh South Island seal - could chew it out well quick
good luck with your choice

I've had 3000km out of the rear Diablo so far. It's about 1/2 worn.
I'm going to try a Metz Z6 next, for the Sth Island trip, and might try Metz M1 after that.
The M1's are miles cheaper than Diablo's for some reason.

I think Lynda is running Diablos on both her monsters and loves them.
If the M1s are as good or better than the Z6's, they should be great. Running Z6's on the YZF and am mightily impressed for a so called, sport / touring tyre - but then - I ride like an old fart so what would I know.
Oh! Thats right, I am an old fart!
ps. you arent running a black monster with clip ons, are you?

A lot depends on the type of riding you do , I have had up to 5000kms from a rear Diablo but tore the last one up in less than 2000kms . Interestingly it appears that aggressive riding on cold roads may have contributed to its early demise( the rubber was coming off in chunks). The theory that the tyre was not up to temperature and therefore sliding slightly causing extra wear.
To test this I have shod the bike with Diablo Corsas to see if the extra grip actualy reduces tyre wear .

.Yep, you're right SPMan, I'm running Diablos (not the Corses, just the "normal" ones) on both my Monsters. Loved them so much on the 800 that I had the 1000's Pilot Roads (a tyre I used to love on my R1150R) taken off before I took delivery of the bike, and had Diablos fitted.
Bear in mind though that I don't ride as hard as some of you guys, but I still punt along.
I can't remember the mileage I get out of them, but even on Sth Island roads I'd have them because they suit my Ducs so well.
They are the best confidence-inspiring tyre I've ever ridden on in the wet.

When I had the ZX12 I ran both diablo's and M1's.The M1's had better grip/ performance and feel, the Diablo's lasted a bit longer. Both provide enough grip to scrape the fairings, but the sportec slid less under power.I always found the feeling from the diablo's horrible, they always felt flat(even with 40psi)and wallowed and moved around too much.2000k's on the M1's and 2500 on the diablo's.
My personal opinion,I wouldn't use diablo's again, but if you don't ride real hard all the time then the extra mileage may be worth the crap performance.

diablos are good, got 8000 ks out of my last rear(3 track days included) with probly another 1000 left easy before changing.have since gone to a diablo corsa for better grip on tracks.
