Been a Tolkien buff from way back. Sort of wish they had never made the movie as it has destroyed all my mental images of Middle Earth and those that inhabit it. Prefer the Silmarilion these days

This is one of the better sights on the net for those interested.

Far out! I thought I was the only one! That Australian bint was NEVER good looking enough to be Galadriel.
I used to have a yearly read of LOTR (aaargh I can't believe I just did that) until the films were announced.

I've got a well read 9th impression 1974 hard cover set,and somewhere an even more read earlier single volume paperback.Like Jim,it was a yearly read for many years.I just love parodies,Bored of the Rings was a hoot (Frito and Spam going to Fordor) I hate movie versions of books I've read, but Jackson's movies are the best attempt on any book I've read.

Yep found Bored of the Rings in much the same vein. Now talking of parodies years ago I read a book Satyman. This was a spoof on Superman and Lois Lane was a nymphomaniac. Funny as hell. Have no idea who wrote it and can not find any reference to on the net. But if you ever come across it, say at a book fair or sale of some sort, grab it.

Yep agreed on that. The other two charecters that did not fit in my opinion were Aragorn (too young for the years spent in the wilderness) and Elrond. Elrond just never looked right to me. The wisdom and compassion of the elf just never came across in the movie. Arwin was spot on .

Thirded Jim's and seconded your comments.....Elrond was a disappointment.
So was Gimli - Did they have to make the dwarves look like an idiot race? I suppose he was a candidate for a comic character, but what about a hobbit?
Haha, now lets pick holes in the movies.... a never-ending task, I read the books at least once a year for a time - have a hard-cover illustrated "The Hobbit", plus a paperback, one-volume trilogy, plus Unfinished Tales, and the Tolkein biography....(read big fan - though not obsessed  I find it hard to get obsessed about anything, I'm too much of a realist....) Loved the depth in the books, and was a little disappointed by the lack of depth in the movies, and the over-dramatic moments.... Still I suppose it had to be hollywooded.....

Frodo: Gandalf, what are we to do with this ring?
Gandalf: It has to be taken to Mordor and thrown into the fires of Mt Doom
Frodo: But that will take weeks of marching, lots of battles, everybody nearly dying and untold death, destruction and hardship.
Gandalf: Nah - I know some giant eagles that can whisk us in there in no time. Back in time for lunch!
Frodo: Sweet! :2thumbsup
