Im on a semi-urgent waiting list for an operation and have been for almost a month now. I received a letter today to tell me that they would try their best to book my assessment in 6 months time. Then I may have to wait for up to another year after that assessment for the actual surgery

I feel sorry for my poor man who has to put up with a grumpy sick chick for so long. I reckon he should apply for compensation for the likely bout of mental health problems he's about to develop....

Arent we lucky that we dont live in a 3rd world country!

Fuck that for a game of soldiers mate! Squeaky wheels get oiled, roll into A&E writhing in pain and screaming the house down! They will soon realise this semi-urgent matter has become VERY urgent and do something. Refuse to leave unless they give you so much pain relief you are off your chops and cant do anything to make them keep you, wait for them to wear off and repeat.

I hear you, Str8, and its a right pain in the arse (or wherever!)
However, when my daughter was seriously ill and needed urgent neurosurgery, she got it. I felt really sorry for the poor bastard who was sent home that day to accomodate her, but absolutely relieved that she got what she needed when she needed it.
Its a bit of a balancing act, for sure, and I'd hate to be the one making the decisions...
All you can do is jump up and down, as Mom says.

Good luck!

Well I'm gonna stick up for the health system. I've recently had an encounter and could not find one thing to complain about. Oh well maybe the 3 hour wait in A&E was a bit long but apart from that it went very smooth. Had the surgery I required within 24 hours and was out home 24 hours after that. I guess because it was an injury from an accident (see avatar) it is a different scenario but still a very pleasant process.

Hope you get the surgery you need sooner rather than later. Have you looked into the private option? Yes I know it costs but at least explore all your options.

Dont get me wrong. Ive been really well looked after, after all my bike accidents. I got seriously ill a couple of years ago and they were great. Im just bummed cause Im suffering really bad symptoms which really fuck up my normal activities and make me feel like vomiting constantly. 6 months seems like forever at the moment!

I definalty hear you. My sister in law waited 2 years to get a MRI scan (bumped of the list a few times) By the time she got 1 she and a Huge brain tumour, which if she had had the MRI scan when she was first put on the list would have been way smaller and other treatment issues would have been avaliable.

Anyways this is her story if u want to read

All the best SJ I hope that u get the surgery u need soon, but otherwise keep hassling them till you do.

With carpal tunnel does it mean your man has to hold your glass and pour the beer into your mouth as well as pour the beer into the glass in the first place?

The system is fucked. I feel sorry for all those working in it trying to do right by their patients but getting no where. Must be heartbreaking for them to have to watch people suffer for so long.

 keep giving them arseholes chick - I hope you get your op soon and can get back to living life 110% again and feeling fine. M is a sweetheart and a strong guy with a very sensible mature head on his shoulders...not a drama queen that would hold grumpiness under duress against you or go all soft headed on it  for you both.

Two years ago our little girl was just over 1 year old. She was not too happy, so we took her to our local A&E. The GP there took a look at her and said: "Meningicoccal disease. I'll ring ahead. Do you want to wait for an ambulance or do you want to race to Starship yourself?"

We raced. Got to Starship and it was like fucking Elevator Music. It's around 10pm or 11pm and by the time we actually got a doctor to see us, never mind Triage by a nurse it was 4am the next day. No matter how many times you go to desk, ask for help, explain the situation they just say: "Sorry, you're in the queue. You have to wait."

Thank fuck it turned out to be chicken pox and not fatal.

So fuckit. Despite the blowout on health spending under the Labour government less is being achieved. I'm now privately insured and yes, it rips almost $200 a month out of my wallet but at least I know if something happens we'll be taken care of.

So Jacket, best of luck. I really hope you get your op. But I don't have the faith in the public health service.

I have quite a good relationship with all my surgeons. I was kept on the triage list for shoulder rebuild after I rebroke shoulder rearranging furniture I was on the waiting list...but got in with 24 hours notice at someone elses cancelation. I had to wait 2 weeks in Hamilton for grafts...that gave me the shits. Everyday I would be waiting ready to go ..and someone else was fired in ahead of me. (Burns unit- Poor souls) Wouldnt have been so bad if I could move. Im still in the system. I cant complain at the level of care I have received. I can complain about the food tho..EWWW.

Heres a tip I learnt many years ago. If you see the specialist privately...then he puts you on the public waiting list, It cuts your waiting time down by %50. Its worked for me on a few occasions. Best result I had thus far was 18months wait down to 3 weeks.
