Dandruff (also called pityriasis capitis) is seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. It is believed to be caused by a proliferation of a normal skin inhabitant, a yeast called Pitysporum ovale (Malassezia furfur). It is a common skin condition, which also occurs in other areas such armpits and groin.
Dandruff is a harmless cosmetic problem rather than a troublesome medical condition and it does not cause hair loss. It cannot be cured, but it can be controlled.
FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES TO EASE YOUR SYMPTOMS:
Shampoo with a dandruff shampoo (Selsun or Nizoral)
Leave the lather on a few minutes before rinsing, then rinse thoroughly.
Use a hair conditioner to smooth out tangles.
After the dandruff clears up, any shampoo may be used. A dandruff shampoo can then be used periodically. Alternating a regular and dandruff shampoo is another option.
There are a stack of good old home remedies to try out: lime juice, aloe vera gel, tea tree oil — it's all a bit hair raising.
