Erik and I were heading down Scenic Drive in Titirangi and saw a horrific sight. A red sports bike lying on it's side against the mountain side...... horrible in the gutter......
There was a fire engine and all the usual coppers ......anyone have more news?
Couldn't see the rider or any others...... but there was no ambulance so perhaps no one was hurt.....
Times like these make me appreciate the Rescue Helicopter....... bonafide heroes those guys :doctor:

Shit, hope it is not one of ours.
Well it's not me. Bike's the wrong colour (quickly runs out just to make sure). No Roxannae is still safely in bed.

We went through there at about 6:15pm. I think there were two firetrucks and a cop car, they stopped the traffic for a while and wouldn't let us past, I'm not sure why. I didn't realise it was a bike until after we had started moving past again, otherwise I would have tried asking what had happened.
It was hard to tell what happened just from what I saw. It was on a corner a few corners up the road (ie, towards Piha) from the Arataki Information Centre. Going back towards titirangi, the road dips down into a left hand corner, and then continues uphill in a long right hand corner. The bike was on the right side of the road in the ditch/side of the bank. It was facing the wrong way for the side it was on and looked like it was fairly well wedged into the ditch/weeds.
I couldn't see what type of bike it was.
There was a car on the side of the road and there was a guy and a chick on the side of the road by the bike, iirc the guy might've been comforting her or something.
I didn't see anyone in bike gear or notice any bike gear on the ground. It could be the biker had already been taken away in an ambulance.
Hopefully whoever it was wasn't hurt too badly.
It was a fairly sobering end to a good day of riding.

Well, I thought it might've been a vtr1000 or something similar, but I didn't see it well so could be completely wrong.

I know exactly the corner, and it is a bitch. Going from Arataki, the corner before is marked 35, but is easily a 60. That corner I reckon is supposed to be the 35. There's rough seal on the outside and inside wheel tracks. Beats me how he/she ended up on the inside.... From Piha side, the corner isnt too bad, but still a bit tricky with rough seal, washboards etc around. I reckon the worst corner on Scenic Drive, and I think Milky will agree.....

Scenic Drive is a naughty little road........
But since it's part of my family no bad words against it alright:niceone:
On that road it is infinitely more efficient if you use your line of sight rather than road signs to navigate.

It just proves that not all of us are invincible and things like that certainly open up your eyes to your vulnerability.
Hope the rider is OK, and all you guys ride safe. Makes me cringe when I hear of KB's binning.

Just spoke to a workmate who is a volunteer f/f up there, he didn't attend that call out but was told about it, the guy apparently injured his arm/wrist in the accident.
He walked away from the accident... Phew!!!!

that road is an awesome road to ride if you know if. Blistered many a tyre on that one, but it isn't forgiving. It tricks you to go hard out, then out pops a corner that tightens or some crap right in the road line you're taking. All too easy to get it wrong. Unbeliveable scenary on that road, just don't become part of it..
Hope the dude is ok..

Hopefully this is not the same dude my wife dealt with at Middlemore hospital yesterday. When she got home from work about 4pm and I asked her how her day was, I was told 'busy because I was looking after (she's a theater radiographer) a naughty biker who'd done a runner from the police and crashed into a cliff face'. Dunno what injuries she was dealing with but might be a different one if the scenic drive guy walked away from it.

Dropped my brand new XJ600 out there 2nd day I had it :angry2: Only broke the belly pan though.... Had almost stopped when she fell over and was saved by a poor little sappling from going over the edge.....
