Accounting packages?

Anyone use Quickbooks? Any comparisons with MYOB.

Particuly interested in how good is the support etc.

it really depends on how much you are going to do with the software.

do you want it to keep track of your debtors & creditors or just income & expenses?

i highly recommend MYOB probly cos i use it 8 hrs a day

Talk to your accountant first. I did and he recommended some shit arse application called "Cash Manager". $500 or something similar, written in some god forsaken early 90's shitbox language like powerbuilder, replete with nasty nasty "tadaa" noises once it's done the reconciliation it's a good idea for one reason and one reason only: it's files are directly compatible with the big evil corporate accounting software they use. No re-entering of data, no additional cost, and everything is set up just like the accountants like so we get to use some shit cheap "my" time to do things instead of expensive "their" time.

So, I'd talk to your accountants first. Think very carefully before using Xero - and that's all I'll say about that.

I'd look at using the Xero system.

About a year ago it was missing some rather important pieces, but it has undergone a lot of development and they've filled in the gaps rather nicely.

talk to your accountant, ask them what they recommand, often get it cheaper if get it thru them.

AND in turn make sure you get them to setup the accounts way they like it, saves headaches at end of year returns etc.

You could do much worse than "Moneyworks" from Cognito Software in Takapuna. NZ born and bred, very easy to use and does everything you want. Comes in various iterations from basic cashbook to full blown everything......they will also give your accountant a free copy so he/she can sort it out.....

or... for those really confidential documents - this thing (http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/looflirpa/shrinter.shtml) works a treat. The CFO has one, reckon's it's pretty easy on the toner consumption too.

I started off on Quickbooks. It is in large measure the same as MYOB, the screens work the same, input is the same etc. I cant comment on the support though, never had to use it. I found moving to MYOB was a breeze.

As others have said, what are you going to use it for, and what does your accountant say.

Beyond that, MYOB seems to be heavily used, but their support was a bit pathetic when it came to an out of the box tech issue. They simply didn't have any answer, and kind of ignored the issue. Getting through to them often took a while as well.

No comment on Quickbooks support, we use it ourselves, but have never rung support.

MoneyWorks have support personnel scattered around the country. I have been using them for years now and I have never had to pay for support from one of their people...........They also have a support phone line which is an 0900 number (I think) which does cost. But they DO help....!

Take a serious look at cashbook complete by Acclaim Software. I use it with my clients. Easier than MYOB, NZ support. Does most functions. Mostly - it is bloody simple to use.

Speaking as an accountant, (yes, I was one once), paper is probaly better and cheaper than the "simple simon" so called 'accounting' packages.

If you don't know what to do with a paper system, you will just not know what to do with an electronic one, except the mess is much bigger.

I have used quickbooks for quite some time, easy to use & reliable.
Previous comments are correct, make sure your accountant also uses the same system as it makes transfer of info so much easier & makes it easier for them to audit etc. Sorry Ixion but I don't think bean counters really want to wade through 10 column cash books etc any longer.
Get a good bean counter not a glorified book keeper, someone who can give good advice on business managment & direction, it will be dearer but make you more money long term.

We used Quickbooks & switched to MYOB, the main reason was that Quickbooks would only do about 7 lines on an invoice before you had to close that invoice & issue a new one.
Their victim support was ordinary at best & when put on the spot about the 7 lines they told me that 7 was all the program could do. IMHO a totally useless item that cost me a lot of time & effort before it was consighned to the land fill.

We use Quickbooks at work, it has its quirks... and was ok... the support wasn't bad but cost.

Anyway I built filemaker database solution instead, so now the job tracking, and invoicing, stock levels are all from with in FileMaker.
