What an epic ride! 680kms in 11 hours for me.
Highlights of the day:
MaxPreload binning it in a rather large fashion. ZZR1100 over a bump and down the road sideways. Me being the first on scene arriving to him standing his bike up and retrieving his broken bits from the bushes.
Guy on the CBR250R looking green most of the afternoon, then topping it off by spewing all over the petrol tank on the way home.
$21 Steak & Chips lunch at Opononi Hotel/Cafe, which was more like a snack than anything else
Dude on the scooter keeping up with everyone through the twisties, leaning enough to scrape the muffler.
Motocross style 2 inch deep gravel roads causing some very slippery sideways bits. Who the hell decided that was a good idea?!
Me getting my first boot scrape through the very twisty mountains, and getting rid of most of the chicken strips on the front and rear.
The ride home with DucatiHard and partner, as well as the guy on the KTM. Nice meeting you guys, hope the ride down the motorway wasn't too wet!
Cheers to all for the ride. Really enjoyed that. Will be back for the next one!

Dude on the scooter keeping up with everyone through the twisties, leaning enough to scrape the muffler.
Nah, not the muffler - the scraping noise is always the centre stand, but every time is scrapes there is that much less metal and a fraction more lean angle gained.
From home back to home I did a total of over 700kms - but it was great fun, I would happily do it again. I probably only used about 40 buck worth of gas which is not so bad for such a great day out. I could have stayed home and spent the day on the computer, but it is much better to get out there and ride! :Punk:
I would like to offer a big thanks to TOTO for organising this ride :niceone:

good ride all and all guys... great weather for it, lots of great people hanging out etc etc, its really already been said.
However, i think we can learn three things from this ride... when someone stops at least two people should stop with them, also before the ride should specify hand signals for emergency/required stop, and also it to be known that the pointer does not leave an intersection until the TEC is there... but all turned out fine, but good to note for next time and hopefully remember
Well i decided to go for a run when i got home... you know how i said things happen in threes... well there was a bin, a throw up, and then on my run I stepped off a curb and twisted my ankle (which normally isn't that bad, however i have a past injury in that ankle). So am glad i left the run last night, until tonight, or else could have been a very uncomfortable ride today.... gutted!
thanks guys... enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Well KBeers it was a nice day today. Thanks to all of you who came out to play. had great fun meeting new people and catching up with the old friends.
Some of the highlights for me:
Turning up to westgate to find 20 bikers already waiting to go for a ride.
Having a good number of female presence certanly made the event more enjoyable and different :niceone:
Dry roads and tar-less corners was just brilliant. Couldnt have gotten a better riding weather than today.
biker family that did the ride with us - good people. The family member with the Hyosung - please be so kind not to overtake me from the left in the future as it scares me and I dont like being scared :playnice:
redhead police-woman giving a big grin or kaikohe  what is it about women in uniform - I dunno...
The whole KB crew that I havent met before - very nice meeting you and spending the day with you falks. Would gladly ride with any of you any day. Thanks for coming along and hope we see you on the next one :2thumbsup
Mr Ej being the photo man of the ride even if he didnt do the ride himself. O we salute you your Ej highness.
Mr and Mrs. Ducati*Hard - was nice to ride with you two kb celebrities. You trully deserve your fame for riding Hard...
QkChk and QkKid - cheers for the company. That green ninja of yours QkKid sure goes well for a 250cc...
Low lights:
Sorry abour yr paintjob Max - let me know if you want me to post or email you pics I took. How does your thumb feel ?
That damn gravel bit after the twin bridges :pinch: That was not fun. :angry2:
Glice having a :puke: moment on his bike...sorry to hear that buddy. Sorry we found it funny - you get a "take the piss out of anyone at anytime " card for next ten rides to make up for it.
My speedo going nuts on me (I think after that gravel) - basically shows me that I'm doing 40 - 50km/h when I taugh I'm doing 100km/h - wtf...
All in all a bloody primo day, great people, wicked twisties. Thanks all

I was possibly the bike you couldn't get a photo of. You had the camera down as I came around the corner. I was on a 250 ninja (blue) and left the ride at Wellsford. Had things to do and wasn't comfortable with the whole group ride thing. Not sure why I even turned up but enjoyed myself. Carried on riding and found Puhoi packed as they were having wood chopping there.
Maybe one day I'll come on another ride and be more relaxed, but think group rides aren't my cup of tea.
I'm amazed you didn't get rained on, did think of you when the skies opened up here.

Yea I have to 2nd that.... there was a lot of unnecessary passing on the ride which started to wear on my nerves. Especially on the corners.
I'm not referring to the Qk's and Duc's, they were moving ahead of the group and actually had the gas to get past, but on more than 1 occasion when I was happily sitting 1 or 2 behind the leader I'd get forced to the outside of my lane by someone trying to pass on a blind corner without the gas to do so... and for what? Because they didn't approve of my safe spacing? Or just so they could sit 1 spot further up the pack :spanking:
It's a group ride, we ride as a group, it's not a ride to show or try and prove something. That's why I enjoy Toto's 250 rides.
Sorry to add a negative post after such a great ride, but it seems I wasn't the only victim of such annoying maneouvers and it's somthing I'd like to avoid on future rides.:done:

I'll admit some of my passing could have come accross as a bit agessive, but I always planned it out and never did it If I thought I was going to hold up the person I was passing. and I hope that if I do get a bit carryed away that someone will let me know. I have no issue if they are actully going to go faster, but that guy did when it was just me and him, with nothing to gain, except having me be slaming on the brakes to avoid him.

Good ride (what I did of it anyway).
No serious damage to me - fractured right wrist (now in a cast after 14 hours at A&E ) and a bruised left shoulder & ribs & a few minor abrasions. Strangely, I'm actually a lot less achy today than I was yesterday.
What happened: I was on the brakes setting up for the next left hander and hit that nasty bump and locked the front, putting it down the road on the left side. About 6 tumbles of me down the road first onto my left shoulder. Bike ended up on the grassy mud on the other side of the road (luckily no oncoming cars) at the bend. Must have slid a good 40m - quite a long way for 50km/h...
I strangely enjoyed the challenge of the ride home, to a degree. :2thumbsup
Glad to hear you limped her home alright MaxPreload, and hope you are still feelin alright now the adrenaline has worn off. The calbe-tie clutch did the trick eh?
It worked well indeed - I knew I'd need them for something other than re-attaching Crazy Steve's number plate one day!
Sorry abour yr paintjob Max - let me know if you want me to post or email you pics I took. How does your thumb feel?
Bah! That shit'll buff out!
The thumb is fine - my ring finger is swollen and sore but that'll probably be fine inside a week.
Huge thanks to Trump Lady for the escort back through Waipoa to Brynderwyn & Crazy Steve & Din Pelenda for sticking with me down SH16 all the way home. :first: I couldn't have done it without you guys - I couldn't even put my helmet or gloves on unassisted! Damn, that rain stings without a visor!

Then you surley won't have a problem.....
Crazy Steve..
Nope, there's still a problem when I'm forced to the outer-edge of my lane on a corner by a bike doing maybe 2km's faster than me entering the corner, and would be slower than me upon exiting had I not been forced to brake to let them ahead.
There's also a problem when your forced to look over your shoulder every corner on a group ride. We're not on the track.
I thought the 1st thing we learnt when riding was to keep left...
Surley if you had of then there wouldn't be a problem...:2guns:
Crazy Steve..
So on a left hander you hug the inside of the corner right the way round, and the very outside on a righthander? You don't try to... I dunno....ride some sort of optimal line?
Bike in front owns the road. That was the first thing I learnt about group riding. Keep left? Yea, obviously, keep in the left hand lane.
I have no problems with people passing in a corner, If they actually know how to do it.... not entering the corner fast and wide, braking, and forcing the bike inside you to slow down and adjust their line... I say wide since it only ever happened on left handers;)

Erm, i beg to differ... came round the corner, saw what looked like a bike and someone on the ground on the inside of the corner. Took me a sec to figure out wtf was going on eh... Was thinkin to myself "How the hell did someone bin and end up in there?"
Doubt that will put you into danger...
Sorry to hear that it wasn't your cup of tea. However thanks for sharing your thoughts, a very honest opinion.
Oh by the way I did get the photo of yours, it's in this lot here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1884346&postcount=255), 3rd one from the right. That blue 250R is you right? I saw your nod, beside you were the only one passing by who nodded :)

Hey guys n girls, sorry I didnt come out riding with you yesterday. Sounds like a bit of fun. I always enjoy Toto's rides as watching his improvement over time give me immense satisfaction.... until the time he gets too quick and passes me, then its all on lol.
I spent the last day cleaning my RM125, man that thing flies... tore up the best part of the Waitakere ranges and was completely covered in mud. Everything was brown.... trees, forest, bikes, people everything....
Till the next time

mate, firstly everyone should be riding their own lines and you should only follow someones lines if they know you are learning lines!
Secondly, when passing a bike or a car you need much more passing room, there were times when you passed a car and both the car you were over taking and oncoming car had to slow down to allow you to get through. And you do need more room before corners when overtaking.
but its all a learning experience and everyone made it out

Good ride (what I did of it anyway).
No serious damage to me - fractured right wrist (now in a cast after 14 hours at A&E ) and a bruised left shoulder & ribs & a few minor abrasions. Strangely, I'm actually a lot less achy today than I was yesterday.
As I was examining you, I made mention that it's really easy to break bones in places like your wrists, and not know it due to adrenaline and shock. The swelling was very quick, and that is normally an indication that there's something going on. I've broken both of mine 6-7 times.
You're more than welcome to come grab my trailer at any time - but it sounds like you rode home?

The thing is, with group rides, you're always going to get an element of friction between riders because most people want to ride their own ride. But that doesn't excuse them from not being aware of riders behind them wanting to pass - just let them pass if they want to and carry on. Courtesy goes a long way.
I've only recently started on KB rides, first with the SATNR early last year and then Toto's November Northland loop and this one. Previously, I haven't been much of a organised group rider except in the 'Darby Street' days. Everyone needs to find their own pace and organise themselves roughly right after stops so as to minimise the friction, especially so with inexperienced riders around - they don't need any more obstacles.
You're more than welcome to come grab my trailer at any time - but it sounds like you rode home?
Yeah, rode it home to save hassle. It was a fracture but there was no dislocation. I don't break particularly easily - it took a plane crash to break my first bones in '00.
Trump lady followed me back to Dargaville and Crazy Steve caught us up there at the Caltex where we'd been resting & eating. Then Din Pelenda caught up at the end of the Dargaville straights and Trump lady left us at Brynderwyn as we hit SH1, only to pass us again on SH16 when I had to stop for a bit of a rest and to impress the horses.
Actually, traffic was lighter than I expected on SH1, but I decided SH16 was a better (and more enjoyable) option. I didn't want to ruin my enjoyment of the ride any more than I already had! We stayed fairly dry until we hit the NW motorway.

The correct approach is to talk to a mentor or experienced rider, and then stick on their wheel. I watched you doing some silly stuff - passing up the left, forcing a rider wide (twice), braking mid corner, rolling off the throttle etc. Group rides have ettiquite, the reason for it is that if you make a mistake, you can bring another rider down. ZXRider and I got so pissed off watching you that we both jumped off the front and left you to it (the Gixer 1000 and ZX9R). He has 40 years riding experience, ex-racer, and he was riding about 6/10ths.
You were riding past your abilities, and you need to spend time with a mentor. We were young and inexperienced once, the lucky ones get to do this for a long time and improve with age and practice. Possibly the most consistent lines I saw were GSXRTrace's - she's a good, experienced rider who rides conservatively and well within her limits.
I'm the worst person to follow, my line is lazy (I'm riding a thou).
As for the 250 ride comment - I think I got you beat. Chasing y'all into D'ville, I banged off the rev limiter in 6th... It was on a private road.

Glad to hear mate! Wrists can be a nightmare! Broken my right one twice, the 2nd time from a bin which happened about 6 months ago. The Doctors in Thames said it was a minor fracture, but after seeing a specialist turned out I'd torn ligaments and shattered several of the smaller bones....
3 operations and 6 months later I pretty much have arthritis at age 26... still sore from yesterdays ride.

Don't tell me THAT!
My left elbow is getting a bit that way - my humerus is plated with 8 screws and can be painful if loaded in certain ways. They were going to put a rod inside instead but when they found out I was a motorcyclist decided a bent rod if I binned wasn't going to be the best situation.

Yes there were a few close moments and dodgy overtakings, all i can say is please dont assume that the rider in front knows that you are there :calm:. this was a 250 ride and novices were to be expected. feel free to pass but allow the passee some room. Otherwise great effort guys, only 1 mishap that i know of.
See you on the next ride.

Good ride peeps.
Just one grump at a particular rider who passed a car on a left hand blind corner and then nearly kissed the bank a km down the road. They should know who they are and I would suggest you start to slow down and concentrate on what you are doing or you will become a statistic. Dont outride your capability!

Its a classic case of cars merging on bike they don't see, causing me to get distracted form car infront, then having to try and get myself out of it and unfortunately, the gap wasn't quite big enough. Luckily i have insurance and hopefully it can be fixed (as I don't want a newer model! haha)

Hey man, if you want to learn off people you should have a talk to them so they at least know what your doing. Instead of people just thinking your being a pain. and like others have said, get hold of a mentor.
there were afew times when you passed me not long before the entry to a corner and then got off the gas, which could have caused some issues.
but we all live and learn.
people keep on saying you know who you were, but that leaves everyone guessing about whos been doing wrong. isnt it better to let them know for sure so they can learn what they need to change.

Well, and I said this once or three thousand time yesterday, you're in (mostly) one piece, so the rest is a case of insurance companies doing their thing.
No worries, I love hanging out in hospital waiting rooms, I seldom have had the opportunity after so few injuries growing up (TUI!). Seriously, I got to watch the biggest loser for an hour, plus I got give you shit (captive audience), I got to see some westie porn star wannabes, and we stood a good chance of catching Ebola from that Suicide Bomber looking guy.
GSXRTrace was responsible for a 9 kilometer queue along the southern motorway, good effort - those cagers deserved to sit and wait.
EDIT: I was thinking about the accident and how it went down from Trace's description, and also from a couple of other people. Tracey is a good, experienced rider who rides with confidence and caution. Sometimes there is just no escaping hitting the deck when there's so much shit happening. It's always an eye opener when someone experienced and good goes down.

oh no, your poor gixx! :weep: as nice as it is to go new bike shopping, it's just never the same as your baby
Well at least insurance is playing ball and paying out quickly. Did they cover gear damage as well?
Might be able to find a good K7 out there for less than the insurance cheque tho? maybe? :D

Two arms, two legs. You could've been squished by dickhead cop in the van.
You need to buy a Harley, that way people won't dare run you over.
Trace on a hardley?
well i just filled my laughter quota for the day, hehehe

Woohoo - a new GSXR-600 K7 for you next week is it?
It is sad to lose a bike you really love, but these are mass produced and there are many more out there that are pretty much the same. Don't be put off - get out there on a new bike and get riding again ASAP. Getting straight back on the horse and all that sort of thing.

Yea, too many broken fairings = writeoff. Personally I see it as a good thing... saves waiting around waiting for it to get repaired!
Finding a new Gixxer should be easy, there's just so darn many of them!!

Yeah i saw trace chatting to the cops with her poor baby looking quiet beat up. But if you got out with just a few bumps and buises it's all good. Although you'll b on a different ride next time i see you trace, u still got great kudos in my books. Thanks for ur lil tips to help a newb out. I'm sure u'll find your next baby soon. Looking forward to see you out there :)

I'd like to custom paint a GSXR1000 in white, with candy tanderine flames (or even silver pearl flames). Polish the hell out of everything. Kewl...

You will probably miss the 5th gear wheelies anyway but at least you get to keep the pain away from your knees in the twisios :wari:

Hmm, maybe you're right. But there's something special about a bike that will rise to the heavens as far as you have bravery...

If that's his problem I reckon he needs to hang up his 'superbike' boots and get a super-naked like the Fazer.

Cheers for organising the ride Toto. It was great to get out and learn a little more about how my bike goes. Lots of interesting roads and great weather but my butt felt like I had been sitting on plkywood by the end of the day. I did 675 ks, thats a pretty big day regardless of what you ride.
It was good to meet some of the identities from here.
Thanks also to EJ for the photos, good effortHope the downed bikers recover soon.
cheers

Sounds standard to me - well with my current insurer anyway (used to be with State, never got good service from those cnuts).
So far in my current claim, I've dealt with six people at State and out of that, only one was a bitch (she seemed to think that since I got rear-ended, I was at fault because I didn't have insurance. Wrong.) and the other five have been pure gold to deal with.
Took three days to accept my claim against the dickhead, only two days to arrange an assessment, and they paid out on my damaged gear within the first three days without a fuss.
All we are waiting for now is bloody Blue Wing Honda to get back with the parts prices.
I'm a happy chappie (at least as much as I can be) in regards to State so far. :niceone: As long as they don't try to bone me on the bike's value I'll be most pleased.

What kind of logic is that??
"Hi I've been in an accident."
"Do you have insurance?"
"No."
"THEN YOU MUST BE AT FAULT!!"
:confused::weird::wacko:
