Good evening all,

Another newbie here from the Hutt Valley (Wainuiomata actually). Been riding for about nine months now. On my restricted license at the moment and looking forward to getting my full license around early March in the new year. I am getting around on a 2008 Yamaha Scorpio which I ride every day to work, come rain, hail or shine. Absolutely love it. Looking forward to making some new friends on here and go on a couple of rides. Will keep my eyes posted on the regular rides threads I have seen on here and will turn up at these over the next couple of weeks.

See you all around :wavey:
Cheers
Cloggy

Hi Cloggy, you're doing the best possible thing by riding every day in all weather. There is no substitute for experience!

Welcome along & enjoy the ride.

Aye.
First couple of times over the Wainui hill in strong gusty conditions was a little unnerving but practice makes perfect. I am still far from getting anywhere near what anyone could remotely call experienced but everyday I gain a little more knowledge, a bit more confidence. Learn about my own and the bike's capabilities and limits.

Why is that?
Cloggy has been my nickname for a long as I can remember. Came over to NZ from the Netherlands as a little boy some 27 odd years ago. My mates started calling me Kraut first until I pointed out that I wasn't german. With the Netherlands famous for its clogs, the next name was Cloggy. That one just stuck.

This is the same Cloggy that works on the Open Project Street Maps?

If not there's 2 of you in Wainui.

Your mates are obviously very imaginative people!

I took my Scorpio over the Wainui hill and down to the coast this winter. It went pretty well, I thought.

Yep, that's me.
Haven't done any work on the maps for quite some time now though. But it was fun in the early stages there. Has got a little technical now , I would need to do a lot of catching up to provide useful input again.
Who knows, once we start doing a bit of touring on the bike I may get the urge again to do some more mapping.

The other forum some of you may see me on is Offroad Express. My other interest is four wheel drives and getting muddy.

Yep, some of my mates are characters alright. Never a dull moment when hanging around with them.

I was surprised too with how well the little Scorpio flies over the hill. That was one concern I had when buying it. But it seems to be geared just right. Up the Hutt side in 4th gear, wind it out a little, flick it into 5th after the last bend before the top and it'll do 110km/hr when you hit the top. Not to shabby for 18hp. The Wainui side is a breeze in 5th and it will also do 110 over the top. Reckon it will do more than that if I wound it out in 4th but we'll leave those antics till I have some more experience under my belt.

Welcome Cloggy, I think I might have seen you in the mornings a few times at the Hutt Park roundabout? Good bike, but just a little 'reminder' if the bikes got nothing left, then you've got nothing left to play with in emergencies. Going for the 10/10's is when 'the damage' is most likely to happen. Stay safe, Ride safe.

Nope, that's not me. I head down the hill and then up the valley along Cambridge Terrace to Wingate where I work.

Good advice about giving it 10/10's. I will keep that in mind. So far I think I haven't done too bad, I haven't come off or even come close to coming off my bike. Being in my early 40's helps I think. Certainly very aware of being vunerable on a bike and try and ride accordingly. I definitely take it easy when it's wet or windy.
