Would a crossbow such as http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Hunting-shooting/Archery/auction-194050921.htm put a fairly lethal dent in something like a goat or even a fat boar (well maybe not lethal for the pig, but you know-deep)? I don't really have any perception of the strength difference between a 50lb bow and a 120lb one other than the force needed to cock it... Any help?

this is what you need if you want to make a dent

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Hunting-shooting/Rifles/auction-193672150.htm

and its much easier to cock than a crossbow.

BB gun=kids toy. Asked someone else and they said something to put a deer or goat out well would cost more upwards of $700... great...

It's a toy.

If you're hunting with a crossbow you need A: somewhere between 120lbs and 180lbs; B: the ability to stalk an animal to within 50M; and C: the ability to track it when you fail to kill it clean.

So we're talking somat like this: http://www.crossbow.com/hunterhd3

And a fair bit of commitment to learning the craft.

I'm guessing you're looking at a grand for that?

At least. You can get less expensive ones but you're not going to find any sort of proper hunting bow for a couple of hundred new.

I'm not sure your tactics to win at Buckets will be met with much enthusiasm.

Bugger that. What's the best one to permanently maim a burgler

Actually, I will be honest since it looks like i won't have the money to do it now but I was aiming along the lines of scratchas post. A dude has been breaking into my big sis' house night after night 2 times in a row since sunday so I was going to stay up there tonight and wait for him seing as the pigs are too busy having important meetings and such. Don't worry though, they can't warn you quick enough to take not take the law into your own hands... Lol skunk... I figured a little cb125 or something with a crossbow mount would be kinda creative? It will make up for my lack of corner speed! :)

Suggestion 1: Blank shotgun cartridge + trigger + tripwire = burgler shitting their pants.

http://www.visordown.com/forum/forummessages/mps/utn/247308/v/1/cp/1/

Suggestion 2: After being broken into 5 times by the neighbour's thieving little junkie kid, a mate of mine accidentally make his back door handle "live". It was an honest wiring mistake officer.

Best suggestion....get a good video camera in a hidden location. Put it low so the the scumbags baseball cap/hoodie doesn't obscure their face.

The problem isn't finding out who it is, the problem is putting them in hospital or jail before he does anything more. Kinda why I wanted the crossbow. Shotgun would be nice, only it wouldn't be blank. I'm sure I'll get arrested some time tomorrow morning for "taking justice into my own hands", though I guess the crossbow won't be available but the steak knifes in my kitchen draws will :)
