Well it finally happened, and within 24 hours of getting my SV:love: too!

Travelling along a well surfaced piece of road pootling along at just over 100km watching my trip metre (meter?) so I knew when I should be looking for the next turn off to somewhere I'd never been... woop woop. SHIT!

Pull over to be told I was doing 28km over in an 80km zone :spanking:
He was all no-nonsense, didn't want to hear any excuses so I knew "popping a few buttons" wouldn't work either

I'm not going to whinge about him being an arse or whatever, he was doing his job.

What I am going to ask (and yes I know its been done to death) is where I can pick up a good, inexpensive radar detector preferably in Auckland?

There, that's the obligatory abuse outa the way...

My sympathy, not hard to do, especially on a new machine.

Don't know about the detector, plenty of threads about 'em though.

Nice bike btw.

You shoulda asked about "other" maintenance/servicing costs of big bikes :shifty:

inexpensive and radar detector... the old saying pretty much holds true, you get what you pay for. Ie, you can get some really cheap ones, but I think the cops can confirm for you, they're not much more than a light show.

The Bel STI vs V1 bridage will probably come in, but they are probably the two best, maybe an escort into that mix, but they come with the price tags to match. I have an STI, over $1k.

Inexpensive? Depends what you call a lot of $$$ I guess.

In saying that, if it isn't a Bell STI, Passport X50 (the cheapest of the three) or the V1 (the best IMO because of the arrows indicating where the threat actually is) then forget it.

Around $900 brand new, $400-$500 second hand for both the V1 & STI. The X50 can be had for around $250-$350 2nd hand. Not sure of its brand new price off the top of my head.

Hope that helps :sunny:

ps: you will need to either fit that yourself, have a friend do it or pay for it. Then you have all the usual issues of how to practically use it....ie be able to see it go off & react in a nano second, as thats all you get sometimes & thats using the ones mentioned above.

The Bel RX65 is of similar performance to the Escort 8500 X50. They're both decent detectors. Not top of the line but OK. Personally I don't think I'd buy secondhand but if money's tight...

The other one's probably OK too but it's being sold by a guy who's also peddling KAT and Rocky Mountain Radar detectors... for which he should be dragged out into a desert, gut shot and left to die.

I had an Escort X50, from what I read & saw in utube posted tests it came in around 50 metres short of the STi & V1's, so still a bloody good detector. The only budget detector to touch from (again) what ive read & seen (not gospel).

This is the type of situation where 95% of the time a radar detector will save you. The other 5% is bad luck.

Coming into a restricted zone the cop is likely to have been using his radar so you could have a warning a kilometer out. That does a couple of things, 1) makes you think, what is the speed limit and how fast am I going and 2) turns on your defences.

To cover the 5% before someone points it out: yes the cop could be saving the instant on feature just for the girl on the bike.

On the open road a radar detector is less effective. If you are scooting along at warp speed where there is little traffic - just you and the HP, the warning may be at the same time as the cop locks you in :Police:

I agree. I think if I had my time again I could probably settle for an X50.

I used to have an STi and a V1 but wound up selling the V1 because mine had a regrettable habit every now and then of really hanging you out to dry with the speed cameras. Never actually got me a ticket but it must have been awfully close a couple of times. That's from my cage background though so maybe without all the superstrucure of the car you get better performance on the bike? Here's hoping.

What I'd really like is an STi R. Blistering Ka performace and you can switch off chunks of the bandwidth so that it just focusses on the actual threats we face 34.6 and 34.7 GHz. $2000... ouch!

I know when I test rode the SV thou I found it impossible to keep under 60km/h without constantly looking at the speedo. Probably because I was used to judging my speed from the scream of a 250 IL4.

No harm in writing in and explaining what happened and plead for a reduction in the fine/demerits. Worst that will happen is they'll say no.

Hey, a noob question here.

With the radar detectors, it wouldn't be too hard to install it in the car, or on the bike (with a bit of time and skill). So how easy is it to move it from the car to the bike, and visa versa? Because it would be good to just throw it in the car whenever I got for a drive, then put it back on the bike when I go for a ride.

Cheers.

Yeah, me too. Like PB says, *phew*

So, lets get a couple of things in perspective. It's a speeding ticket, it could have been worse. Next time, try crying, men are biologically programmed to give in when a woman cries.

Perspective #2. If you were paying less attention to pass a cop and not notice, then you need to refocus your attention to stuff like cars and other lethal objects that you're sharing time and space with. A pig sniffer isn't the answer - and to be frank, I've had one (hidden) speed camera ticket in the last many years on the bike. Nothing beats the Mark One Eyeball for picking cops...

Car was a beige-y coloured Hyundai, parked up some way back in a driveway, I eye balled it and dismissed it as a non threat.

As far as I was concerned I was sitting right around the speed limit and was genuinely surprised to be told the whole stretch of road has an 80km limit, as was the friend I was visiting who lives out there!

Hmm. I'd be tempted to go back along that road and check. I know someone else who got a ticket in just that scenario, and it turned out the zone was 100k. Ticket got torn up.

Unfortunately for her the road was posted as 80kmh... They've just gone through and decided to drop nearly all of the speed limits in the Matakana area. There was an article about it in the local newspaper which was on the table at our friends place. Most 100kmh areas there are now 80kmh, and what were 80kmh are now 50kmh - not ALL the signs have been changed, but the ones on the main road have.

It's another one of those places where 100kmh isn't unsafe but enough people have gone through there being stupid and either maimed or killed themselves or passengers to make the local council believe that 100kmh is too dangerous.

A gripe I have is there are too few speed limit signs and it is easy to miss them. This is okay for locals who know an area but I have been caught out when travelling into a new area and missing signs. In Australia there are heaps of signs - if you miss a couple there is another one. In NZ they put one or two at the point of entry to an area and no more.

I bought the STI after getting pinged in what I assumed was a 70kph area. At just past the 2nd 50 sign going down off a bridge the cop was waiting. Yes I missed the first sign which was at a roundabout at the end of a motorway - the road following over the bridge was 2 lanes and could have easily been a 70 area.

Classic speed trap situation to easily get the ticket count up.

Little Miss Trouble
23rd December 2008, 16:35
In all honestly its pretty funny to me now, all the mis-bahaving and naughty-ness I have/do get away with only to get pinged when I thought I was being good!

It was just a bit of a shock to get it so soon after getting a bigger bike, but thinking about it some more I doubt I would have been doing any different had I still been on the GPX or in a car.

A RD will still be on the shopping list at some stage but its not URGENT, since my sense of time & place is still in good tune most of the time.

On a positive note, it's gutless, useless in the twisties and the brakes fry easily.

Easy, the cig lighter cable and bracket stays in the car and the detector just clips on and off. On the bike you need to use some form of mount, I use the RAM mount which has a metal plate that attaches to the bottom of the detector and then uses a magnet base attached to the bars via a bracket to just clip on the bike.. You will also need the hardwire cable for the bike (about $30) then you just un plug from one and onto the other, and back and forth.. easy..

Sure, if you check out the "expired listings" section (of any item) you can see what has either sold (and for what) or what it got "passed in" at. To get a good idea of what is really going on in the market place check the date of the auction & also check the actual listing itself to see if its in good condition etc then check the end time of the auction as some clowns finish auctions at 3am on a Tuesday & wonder why their $1 res only sold for half of what it should of. After that you will get a good idea of what is happening.

Ive seen your listing for your gear Boomer & it is well priced for what you get. However not many are willing to fork out that much but more to the point its too many items in one package, ie a little too specific. If I were you I would sell each component separately.

Hope that helps

Depends what kind of roads. Hop onto a motorway, and stick at the speed limit for a few hours... you'll get a good work out.

Back roads are much easier, as you are moving around, corners etc. A small screen to take the pressure off your chest will help a huge amount (tested it myself). Too big a screen, and you may find you get buffeted by it. Its all relative to the rider's size. What works for some won't work for others.
