As of yesterday I'm now bikeless again. Logic & budget would dictate I should buy something like a sports tourer RF900/YZF1000 etc etc

But...

there is this annoying farkin voice in the back of my head saying "this is the chance you have to finally buy that thou"

So my question is.... What is a realistic price to pay for an early GSXR1000 (or 750 but they seem pretty hard to find) if you can find one in reasonable condition & that hasn't been beaten like a rented mule?

$8-$10k should get you a 1k.

PLenty of good deals around at moment on range of bikes

Their price seems pretty static once it drops to around 10k, maybe a bit less now, with the economy.

i got a 01 1000, i would sewll it for 7.8k if i was convinced
