Have done some searching on here and i see that the horn of choice is a "stebal".
Yes its loud, but why could someone not use a car air horn or something simular.
Just a few thoughts of what people have got/tried.

1 word - size.

The stebel is a nautilus shape (coiled up like) whereas a car horn is a 15cm funnel.

Result? Car horn noise that fits beneath your fairing.

... car air horn or something simular....

I used to use a car air horn on my old hyosung. the compressor fitted between the frame and plastic at the back, with the horns underneath on the screws that held the plastic on. they got very close to the wheels.

I have Stebel Nautilus horns. There is also a "compact" model that is only about the size of 2 packs of ciggies. Ebay is a good place to find em and $50.00 is about right. They come complete with mounting hardware and relay w wiring diagram. I put mine on a switch, to either isolate (Bike horn only) or parralel...both horns.

They certainly get ppls attention!

+1,
is first modification to make on any bike! Got mine in a few days from e-bay Oz....saved my skin a couple of times.
One guy who didn't see my little bike coming stalled his cage after I honked my horn and he panick braked, looking around him in bewilderment trying to spot the oncoming "truck".....Priceless

Cool guys some more input,

A mate came over today (unexpectedly) with twin air horns so i tried them:shit:,
:love:Money wise i think i will get some tomorrow as they are $30 from supercheap.

I may need ear plugs for myself though as twin horns right there:shit: say no more.

I liked the look of the chromed horns but alas i dont have a credit card so getting things like that prove to be difficult.

Thanks for the replies guys
P.S. my bike seems to be getting sluggish, oh thats right it will be the 50 sausages i have eaten this week

Where did you/will you mount them? under the fairings?

From my eye:msn-wink:i should be able to mount the compressor where the other horn is and cradle the trumpets inside the farrings just need to figgure how to secure them.

Man that is going to be LOUD! :eek5: let me know how it goes beacuse i'd be really keen to get a louder horn!

when do you reckon it will be done by?

Hopefully tomorow. I have the day off so i will have something to do.

Would you like to see/hear the results?

If i finish with enough time i could be up for a ride.

I would but an absence of a clutch cable isnt letting me do anything at all! haha unless youve got a spare one that you would be willing to trade with cash??

Sorry i dont, but would gladly do if i had.

I will see what kind of photos i can take when done.

main issue i have is not so much where but how to mount them so that they arent just sitting there.

Yea thats a good point, just looking at my bike, there doesnt seem tobe alot of places to mount it, the mount for the stock horn is a bit small, unless you chuck a bigger mount onto the small one (depending on how much it weighs of course)

Gummie
27th December 2008, 20:49
And i found out you cant use that mount the horn has locktite on the nut that holds it on.
Will mock up something as i usually do.

Dont stop there i have seen a few Maxs in the states with 2 of them , you could always use a train horn - might need a couple more batteries tho:lol:

Ok. I managed to mount compressor ok.
The horns i am still working on i managed to duck tape them to the inside of my farings until work tomorrow, i should be able to make some plates to bolt onto.

The neighbours did complain but luckily i get on with them:apint:

See what ya think?

1:From the Front
2:Left Side View through the faring, horn sits from indicator to GT250R
3:Right side looking forward through the side
4:Top view looking down through handle bars

Hiflyer

that'll leave a few cagers looking for the truck!!!

where re you gunna attatch the plates? or are you just going to figure that out when you get to it?

If i undo the main faring i can slip a plate in there somewhere on one of the bolts.
That seems to be the most logical place, plus it will face the horns down and forward instead of down and back which in turn seems to end up in my ears or it could be the fact its right there between my leegs

Anyway cant wait to give some unsuspecting cager a go:2guns:

haha yea,

so the horns themselves arent that heavy? just the compressor right??

Gummie
28th December 2008, 21:11
Same weight as a can/stubbie of beer  roughly, horns are plastic light as my wallet LOL
Thats why i am not to worried while they are only duck taped in.

Im hopeing work is not so busy tomorrow then i can work on it there, otherwise i will have to wait till my holidays.:oi-grr:

and i assume its loud? you know how many decibels (sp) it is?

Quack quack,,,,,,Duct tape....?

cable ties are your friend....even if you got to drill through your fairing

I had twin air horns for years on my Yamaha. The compressor draws a lot of current and I used it once at high speed because a car I was passing pulled out to pass another car(hate that) and the current draw through the original horn button heated up the wire spring, melting the plastic and jammed the horn on!!!

I couldn't figure out what the buzzing noise was and why my pillion was tapping my shoulder.

The original horn wires should just connect to the "switch" part of the relay and one other terminal goes straight to the battery or other power source and the last terminal goes to earth.

It is fairly straight forward after a bit of experimenting so have some spare fuses in case you get it wrong.....or see an auto sparky!

Yes LOUD one of my work mates has a decibel meter, but he is on holiday.

Today i managed to make some brackets(see pics), they are now mounted from the fairing bolt that is by the knee and faceing downward toward the hole at the bottom of the farring. I needed to get extra hoseing though as the tube is not long enough to reach that far.

Awayatc: you will be glad there is no more duck(quack,Quack) tape lol, i cable tied every thing now it is in place.

Macontour: Yes i need to relay it too. Learnt that lesson when i tried (in my younger years? Not so long ago) to add spot lights to my car. Ran hot wire into car to switch then back out straight to lights. Melting/burning plastic is not a good smell in your car.
I plan to do that while on holiday next week.

Nice one mate!

I just installed the Nautlius magnum on my CBR as it was sitting in my tool box for months. t was easy enough to install as I just took my old one and bolted it straight on, though it could do with an extra mounting plate.

It's nowhere near as loud or as effective as an air horn as the Magnum is an electromagnetic horn, but hey, it was a simple 15 min job.

I would love to hear how it sound mate, seeing it's from supercheap for 30 bux, that's a pretty remarkable deal!

:eek:Installed relay at work today as its been quiet.:eek:

Fitted in perfectly. I had only one problem i gave myself an ear full on first test as it is *&^%ing louder now.

Sweet my first mod has gone with out a hitch.

Mate came in with his decibel meter it went off scale at 114db. It doesnt go any higher than that and it is instant sound(hmmmm TRUCK):devil2:
