View Full Version : Where to try your ZX14 top speed

So since I get myself a new bike, virgin (with 0 km on the clock) ZX14 :wari: , with some minor improvements from factory specs, such as yoshi pipes, :shifty: hehe, ok ok showing off is finished :done: , back on topic, what I am after is a piece of road to really squeeze the throttle on, just a straight and long, say a runway in airport, so I'm not gonna loose the license for 200+ speeds. So once I finished with engine break-in I want to try how it feels on 300

Here is my new baby below

Id say your best bet would be a drag strip, just get your launches sorted and keep her pinned:woohoo:

Nice bike and well wear:niceone:

I got my busa up to 265 on the back straight at pukekohe, dont really want to go any faster, wind kinda puts you off and im chickensh!+. you could wait for the speed trials that pop up every so often.
Is it still speed limited to 299?

There are a few places where you can do it, sadly, none of them endear you to the local fuzz...

Doesn't take that long to get there btw, so don't imagine for a moment that you need a 9 mile salt flat or whatever...

you would need at least a couple of ks,there are some long straight roads over the wairarapa.....the sprints held a few weeks ago would be the place, but even those woulnt let you get to absolute max speed....you would get to mid 200s pretty fast though...

Your airport idea sounds like a good one - other than the obvious risks/problems with doing anything over 140 on a public road, hitting anywhere near 300 would be best done on a fairly smooth surface.

Also - high speeds should only be experience on a naked bike - then you really know you are hauling arse :Punk: (or so I am told....:innocent:) there's nothing better to strengthen your neck muscles.

For screens try www.godiva.co.nz first, phone 0800 245 325 - a NZ company based in Hamilton - excellent quality and well priced plus different colours are available.

A double bubble for the ZX14 is $165.

If you order from them ensure you get a can of Plexus spray - its brilliant stuff for screens and plastics.

Nice, checked the site but they don't have a pic of the screens but they do have an option of double bubble or sport tourer screen for the 14 which is nice.

Ramarama motorway straight....
Brilliant place for meeting plod tho. Rode whole night in country, not a single radar hit, and I had 2 on the ramarama straights when returning home.

Drag races, or pukie back straight are your best bets. The superbikes are going over 300 on the back straight, so if you have the balls, skills etc, you should have no problems getting at least close to 300 (the 600s manage indicated 260-270).

Better than a single lane back country road too, they are extremely bumpy in the higher speeds.

Cliffhanger sprints: http://www.cliffhanger.org.nz/sprints/sprints.htm. 293 km/hr by a ZX14 earlier this year.

Glad to see you are taking it off the streets for your top speed runs. Meremere drags for example have days where ther public can show up and do a run.

One of my mates is back on the road after a very big ticket. He had his 'special place' for high speed work but he gave a local farmer shit over a trivial matter so the old fella dobbed him in to the cops. He had to get a lawyer to get the charge down form dangerous driving but still got a big fine and a long walk.

If you're feeling lucky 90 mile beach could provide the oldschool landspeed record atmosphere - a cocktail of adrenaline, salty spray, sand and fatal danger.

Otherwise, there's an entire South Island available if you are willing to brave the Straight.

theres a pretty decent straight out towards tora in the wairarapa. Got the car to max out along there probally 2km + long, its slightly downhill aswell so you can see everything comming for miles

DING DONG

*Question Alert, Question Alert!*

I saw a guy on a very very very very very nice 14 the other day. He departed but couldn't see, however I heard he accelerated from 0 to somewhere speed of up to Mid rev range, 3rd gear.

The question is, what speed did he reach?

Note: I heard the 14s can do around 160kph on first gear.

Is that all? Someone want to confirm? I would expect it to be more like 190-200ish? The thous will do 180-190...

180-190km/h in first? On factory gearing? Really?

From my block I can see the motorway by the service stop (south), early just after light on some sunday mornings, biker on what I make out to be a GSXR750 does a top speed run. There is little to no traffic at that time.Biker rides south, takes exit, back on MW north. Now I can hear biker ,then for a few seconds see biker, then hear biker slow and exit MW.I assume biker does a ride past to check for the plod first.

What thou does that in 1st? With STD gearing?

160 maybe...

not sure about the busa/zx14, but I know a mates k6 gsxr thou would do about 185 (indicated) in first, so thats why I would imagine the bigger bikes would be a bit higher.

All the big bikes have tall first gears, the aim is to stop you looping it (it can go from impressive wheelie to impressive fuck up very quickly in first)

What thou does that in 1st?

160 maybe...
My 2004 zx10 would see 160+ in first (indicated), it only goes higher for the newer bikes.

There has to be a line between useability and speed. I'd argue they would be that high 'coz they'd be ugly to ride around town at 50.... Or at least to get off the line without slipping the clutch to death.

What we need is a sheep/squid with a Gixxer thou to confirm said 1st gear speed...

As for a tall 1st... That's so the rest of the ratios can be closer spaced for track use. Yes, it may not help wheelies but I'd think it's secondary to function...

Gremlin
29th December 2008, 00:57
oh, the other benefit of a tall first is, without a slipper clutch, banging it into first, unless you're being a real muppet, its pretty hard to lock it up (we're not talking racing, road riding)

AlBundy
29th December 2008, 01:08
Yeah, must say, slipper clutches are a nice to have... They seem to make them slides into corners much smoother and controllable... Lets one concentrate on getting the bike setup for the corner instead concentrating on salvaging the corner, lol... (Though prior to the KTM, I'd not really needed a slipper clutch for road riding...)

Yea I get it :)
My old Gixxer 750 oiler was good for almost 130 indicated in 1st @ 13000rpm
The only thou I've ridden was an '01 R1...150 indicated in 1st.
I guess as rev limits rise and ever improving Engine Management systems create improved torque and civility at low rpm these beasts behave them selves in a tall 1st at urban speeds quite well.
