Heading south with the great pootler (GiJoe) on New Years day...

Just wanted to check that the BP Timberlands in Tokoroa is open that day (only 1 of about 3 stations I can see), or at least one is open in the area.

Likewise, I can only see BP Connect Taihape in Taihape... anyone know if it is open or not?

Off topic, but I presume the Caltex in Haast (Caltex Johnston Motors) hasn't shut or anything? Bit of a long haul from Franz Josef to Queenstown without gas (aka walking) :innocent: Thats only on the 5th of Jan, but the SI seems notorious for not having gas, or non-existent.

Cool, thanks for that... Reserve will be carried anyway, but only 70-80km worth... Supermotos aren't the best of friends with gas, wanting to get rid of it as soon as poss

Yes, Caltex in Haast is still open, as are both stations at Makorora.

However I'd would suggest you fill up at Fox Glacier, and again at Hawea (240 km). Haast and Makorora are among the dearest petrol in the country.

I get 160 km a tank and have regularly travelled the coast, haast etc without using reserve. Take your time and enjoy, it is one of the best bits of nz. Some pic's in my albums of down there.

Point taken... route adjusted in Mapsource. It might introduce another stop around Winton, but should be able to get to Invercargill with reserve (no point carrying extra fuel if you never use it aye?)

First time for both of us down that section on bikes. Extra stop time has been built in on the 4th, only going from Hokitika to Franz Josef, rest of the day spent admiring the scenery...

And here Gremlin thought I was joking when I mentioned I was going to bring along spare fuel containers and bugger all else!

Ah well, guess I will just bring the one spare container then in light of all this!

ta... and it will probably be pissing down like nobodies business...

Any cops that do feel so inclined (or any motorist) had better do a good job... otherwise they will wish they had.

BP Tokoroa is open 24/7 as is BP Putaruru just up the road.
