View Full Version : Taken out... I think

So, Wangas turned to shit just after midday for me.
After getting to grips with track again in the morning and running in the low 54's in the second supersport race, things were looking good and I was ready to go for it in the afternoon.
Unfortunately something happened on the warm-up lap for the second F1 Superbike race. Entering turn 2 lightly on the brakes and the next thing I know I've highsided about 5 metres or more before the corner (based on the scrape marks). How the fuk I managed to highside pretty much in a straight line all by myself, without using the rear brake and without changing down gears...I just can't exaplin despite a lot of thinking about it.
I assume I was shunted from behind, the bike got out of line, rear tyre gripped and thus the high side. Tyre marks on my tail piece indicate that someone was pretty close to me at some stage.
I'm not out to smash someone, but I'd just really like to know for sure what the hell happened. And if I was taken out, I'd like to know why a knowing other party said nothing. So if anyone has photos, video or saw the incident, I'd like to see/know what you saw.
Cheers

Hi Toast,
yea you highsided right in front of me at turn 2. No one touched you I would say you hit the white line. Looked a bit strange as it came round really quick and dumped ya on your head. (may have been some thing on the track)
sorry

He probably learnt from you Shaun, that's how you got fast riding in JSB? He probably had high expectations coming down here, and has really had to ride out of his comfort zone on circuits he was unfamiliar with just to look half respectable, he was about a second quicker than me on taupo, but yeah crashed aswell.
Yeah and Toast bummed about you smashing up your bike, be interested to see footage if anyone has some. Would have been good to wrestle with you at the TRRS.
Excellent footage of that crash Gremlin, that camera is in just the right spot.

Funny man, I only ever crashed 3 times in Japan Superbikes years ago after 61 days at tracks all over Japan!
BUT, my post was a bit harsh on him! But to finish first, first you MUST finish.

Yah! You were a weee bit harsh there Shaun. Can't be easy coming over to mad old NZ and being touted every where as THE rider from Japan, Japanese flag waving from the flagpoles at Wanganui because of only you... he couldn't really then just wobble his way around slowly then could he? Every one would laugh at him for being slow. Anyway I had a chat with him in Taupo. Seems like a nice fella. Wish we had more overseas racers coming over and giving it a go here. Good on him for doing it.

Riders from overseas were frequent visitors during 'the good old days' of the '70's and '80's, remember Yatsushiro and Goodfellow? Mamola and Avant?
Glory days indeed!

Talked to him a lot myself Cleve, in fact I drove in Taupo at lunch time, and went to a great Japanese restaurant and purchased lunch for a whole team, as a way of saying welcome to Nz from me/us!
Still, he was a crash weighting to happen, ( Proven) and as a rider of many many years, and I can say that, fare or not, I do know what I see on and of the track as far as riders go, but any way, good luck to him and his team for all there hard work.
It would have been a lot smarter to not risk his neck or sponsors money, and learnt how the job goes here for next time, but what do I know eh, I am a crasher myself.

Though Avant was a Kiwi boy from Chch and Goodfellow was a Canadian resident Kiwi . Others that rode included, Mortimer, Padgett, Hennen, Cooley, Lucchinelli(!), Willing, Hansford, Quincey, Sayle in then 70's and I remember seeing Rob Phillis at Wanga's in about 82 or 83. But yes, be good to see more guys

Cheers for that dude. Strange as it may seem I am actually glad to hear it, and have a little more understanding of the incident.
Really was a weird feeling, one minute stable, the next bars slapping and high side. Time to check over the bike very carefully I think.

This sounds like the same spot where I nearly came off. But I think I lost the front, the bike started slapping and in general out of control. It was only luck I didn't crash. It was weird, I wasn't hard on the breaks or anything.
Oil?

Interesting to hear that, mate. Maybe it was oil...were you slightly inside of the racing line that most adhere to approaching there?
I don't think it could have been white line for me, because by that stage of the day it was pretty warm and they weren't so much of a factor anymore I didn't feel...and like you, I wasn't that hard on the brakes
