Kiwi fails in truck backflip attempt
NZPA | Thursday, 01 January 2009
A New Zealander making a world-first truck backflip attempt was part of the main attraction at a Las Vegas New Year's Eve event.
Rhys Millen executed the backflip of his 1,300kg off-road truck perfectly – until he rolled upon landing on the Las Vegas Strip.
The 36-year-old rally driver broke his back a year ago attempting to perform the stunt, but walked away last night unscathed.
"Last year we attempted what was before then thought impossible. . . My body can be broken but my mind cannot," Millen said before the event.
He was part of a team entertaining revellers on the Strip, alongside Aussie motorcyclist and fellow Red Bull stunt team member Robbie Maddison who performed a 37 metre jump, landing on a replica of France's Arc de Triomphe.
The stunt was the considered equivalent to jumping on to a 10 storey apartment building.
Millen won the Red Bull Drifting World Championship this year, and has performed as a stunt driver in numerous commercials and movies.

Bloody shame Millen didn’t land it
I didn't realise how well he's doing over there, winning the world Drifting championship etc. (Probably like the World Series in Baseball, only U.S teams enter).
Nice to see the main events at Vegas were a Kiwi & an Aussie.

It's that sort of irresponsible behavior that is giving motorcyclists a bad name.
What will the public think. What about the risk. Did he drink enough. What bout the effect on third part premiums. He didn't countersteer and the bike didn't have USD forks.
I'm outa here.

The step up was pretty easy compared to riding off the edge for the step down and then very nearly over jumping it, huge respect for the guy and I hope he goes on to break more records:niceone:

So, Millen's backflip was deemed a failure?
His truck went up, backflipped, came down again, then executed a nice (if somewhat ungainly) roll as part of the dismount.
What's wrong with that?

Is there anything you cant do on a motorcycle?. That guy is a Bloody Legend and I am so glad he managed to pull it off in front of his fiancee and all his fans. That would have to go down in the record books.

Wow. I was speechless after the jump. I started to wonder how they were going to get the bike down again. I figured they got the crew up there so they'd get him and the bike down the same way. Maybe a cherry picker or something. Then he just rode right off the edge. I am stunned.

Takes some nuts alright! Red Bull gives you wings. Very tidy descent in not overly lit conditions with flashes everywhere. Good on him. He deserves to be called an extraordinary human being.

He actually never intended to do the descent, spur of the moment thing. He over jumped slightly on the way back to earth landing well down the ramp and tore the webbing between his thumb and forefinger in half. That info was from his interveiw in dirt action or ADB mag.
