Ride ON

My turn to suggest a long ride, and get some Aucklander’s seeing more country south of the bombays, as well as getting to meet more people! I am firstly just interested whether anyone is keen to do this and if so will specify a date later. I am aware the distance to be covered on the first day (a Saturday still to be determined) is rather long, but if we leave early enough and keep moving we should be able to do it!

All riders from Auckland (and surrounding areas), Waikato and Taranaki are welcome to join in if you like the sound of it!

Please note: this is not a ride for learners, as the distances covered are considerable so cannot afford time spent waiting at each turn or stop, and all riders will need to have open and country road riding experience.

Proposed ride:

Starting from Papakura BP/autobarn, meeting at 7:45am for briefing and leaving 8am saturday, the ride will head south to Ngaruwahia. Then continue through the back cut (SH 39) to Otorohonga and Te Kuiti.
This is where I suggest any Taranaki riders meet us, my parents will probably be coming up over Mount Messenger and through the gorge to meet us there.

After refueling we will head south-east towards Bennydale but turning onto Kopaki Rd and out to the Taumaranui highway. We can again refuel at Taumaranui. From there, there are no fuel stops for 150 km through the Forgotten Highway, but great scenery of eastern Taranaki hill country. Plan to stop for a drink in the republic at the Whangamomona Pub. Then continue through to Stratford. There are four saddles between Taumaranui and Stratford, with nice valley riding and alongside rivers.

Please be aware that this road does have the ability to surprise, be aware of slips/stock/gravel/train crossings and some corners do tighten up. Do be aware there is one relatively long tunnel.

From Stratford, we will go into New Plymouth, and probably stop for lunch by that stage. Again we will refuel in NP, then head around the mountain (through Oakura, Opunake, Hawera). Then back on the main drag through to Wanganui. With another refuel at Wanganui we will head on through the Paraparas to Raetihi and Ohakune.

Depending on numbers interested, we have a house for accommodation at Ohakune. Otherwise we will have to arrange accommodation.

Then on Sunday we will head north through Taumaranui, Te Kuiti and on to Ngaruwahia. From there we will go through SH 22 to Mercer and then cut across the motorway and continue up the back roads back into Auckland.

A map will follow… just haven’t gotten around to doing it!

Oh yeah by then you can ride it legally eh? Man it's gonna be awesome, it's a shame you missed the last tour we did through there (that you organised)! Hopefully it ain't gonna rain, otherwise you guys will all be waiting hours for me, hahaha.

GSXR Trace
13th January 2009, 08:01
sweet as guys... a little rain and it will still be on, but if forecast is for tornados it wont... obvious keep an eye on it few days before hand, and final decision will be made friday 30th

So far, there are only four of us, all coming from auckland, so definitely no problem with accommodation so far. Im heading over to ohakune the weekend before to take sleeping bags and blankets, and will also go through forgotten highway to check her conditions out.

Reido
1st February 2009, 19:39
what kind of pace are we looking at?

GSXR Trace
1st February 2009, 23:44
Reido, open road speed will be a bit faster than the learner ride pace, as can push the speed a little as riding in a group, but im also not interested in doing speeds where i can loose my licence or get fines. obviously it does depend on how everyone in the group is feeling, but we will be moving along at a decent pace as have a fair distance to cover.
i don't really want to put a speed on it, as it depends on what the day is like, how many bikes, etc

does that answer your question in a very gobble-de-goop way? sorry shouldn't have tried to answer after getting back from a ride, when should be in bed!

2nd February 2009, 01:08

Late as in... never? Haha... I was a bit late, oh well...

what kind of pace are we looking at?

A comfortable pace.

GSXR Trace
2nd February 2009, 08:57
A comfortable pace.

god i was tired and incoherent at 12:30, and then you go and put it that simply at 2am! how did you make it to work on time this morning?

yes, on open road it will be a comfortable pace where you will be able to take in the scenery a little. However we do have a fair distance to travel and so it will not be a total cruize and for anyone just starting out on open road riding this is not a recommended ride for you.

but from who has shown an interest so far, i don't believe we will have any issues

Toto, how do i do a register thing again?

then scroll down to find "add ranged event"

then enter the details, provide a link in it to this thread so its EZ for people to find :)

I believe i have not set up a calendar event for this ride, so you can now register to say you will be attending. I do need to know numbers that are going to attend, as have some sleeping space at our bach, but in event there are more required, I need to book the accommodation i have found, which will only cost $10 each a night. So get in touch with me relating accommodation. Unless you want to get your own accommodation, and thats fine too of course

also, change of meeting place... now meeting at Papakura BP autobarn, just off motorway (as Uni is too busy with roadworks at the moment)
so meeting at 7:45 for briefing and leaving at 8am

hope to see you all there!

This sounds like a really good ride, I've yet to make it to New Plymouth so this sounds like a good reason to go. I'm guessing the first day will be around 450km's give or take some, I've done that before but walked funny the next day so I think I'll need to get on the bike as much as possible to get the John Wayne walk under control.;)

Yeah, I snore, so I hope everyone brings their earplugs...

EDIT: I just looked at the map, that first day seems like a loong day! Last time we did a 250cc 3-day tour with almost the same route, on day 1 we reached New Plymouth as it was getting dark, day 2 we reached Turangi as it was getting dark, and it seems this time we'll be doing nearly the same distance in one day! Google maps says Auckland -> Ohakune through the route we're doing will be 770kms, so it will be a long day - be sure to get enough rest the night before!

ok, so let me explain sleeping arrangement...
in the bach, my folks room is obviously taken, and im sure to be the one on their couch. Depending on how cousy everyone wants to be, my room can sleep 4 to 6 (queen bed, bunks and couch that folds out to a double). The downstairs bedroom has a queen as well, and the nursery would sleep a couple on the floor (in process of changing it back to bunk room, but at moment, cot etc has been removed and its just floor space). And then there is the lounge, that has couch, two lazy boys and floor space... you can fight amongst yourselves for where and what you sleep on!

if that is not enough, i believe the accommodation for $10 each is one room with a bunks... but will check tomorrow

accommodation i found is a place with 12 separate rooms... so wouldn't have to all sleep together!
and won't cost anything....
so, we will fill the beds at my place and then probably go there with everyone else... and in event more arrive... they get floor space!

however, at the moment, only have 6 (including me)... so i think we will fit! haha

Was interested, but I think the superbikes are on at Pukekohe for Round 5... all hands to the marshalling...

This is a good thing for Trace, since Gremlin will probably end up breaking only the bikes there at Puke :thud:

haha... well you can sort out who you get cosy with... but at this stage there is no need to bring tent etc... plenty of beds so far! but in the event there is a sudden mad rush of people getting excited and wanting to come, ill let ya know the tent is required! if its small enough, should be able to set it up on the grass outside the deck!

OK, sorry guys but with numbers increasing, I hope its okay if everyone chips in $10 for accommodation, so that we all share the cost. If it is shared around those staying both at our house and those up at the motel, my dad will pick up the rest of the motel bill!

I like to pay my own way when ever possible, but I'm easy going so just let me know what, where, and when and I'll hand it over. The money that is for all of you who like to take posts and twist them all around.

Hi Guys,, ive sent this in a PM to those who have registered (and will send it to the person who just wants to come around the mountain with us), but here are the planned details.

Due to the fact that the paraparas are winding and unforgiving (with banks on one side and 300 foot drop to the river on the other), for those who haven't been through before it would be a good idea to try to get through in the light. Therefore, I have decided to change the departure time from papakura to 7am. Therefore meeting time for briefing will be 6:45... and will be leaving 7am sharp!

Planned schedule:
7am leave Papakura, and regroup in Ngaruawahia and on to Te Kuiti (arrive 9:15am)
Full up with petrol in Te Kuiti, leaving 9:45am
Arrive Taumaranui and stop for petrol, leaving 11:15am.
Ride through to whangamomona for a drink, and then onto New Plymouth for lunch stop at 2:15 pm.
Leave NP at 3 pm, we will go around mountain and regroup in Hawera and then continue into Wanganui for petrol and dinner (arriving 5:45, leaving 6:30)
and hopefully will arrive in ohakune before 8pm (before dark)

I know the stops aren't too long, but figured if we have regular stops they don't need to be long, so if you wanna grab a drink and quick bite to eat thats fine, but we need to keep moving to make it to kune in a decent time and see the paraparas in day light!

Also, if you haven't registered by wednesday night, i cannot guarantee accommodation, so would be an idea for you to organise your own.

Hope to see you all bright an early saturday morning!

Have a great week!

I’m sorry, but I voiced my concern, and still do not think it is appropriate for someone who has just gained their restricted licence and only done a few country rides to come on this ride, because it is a very long ride and lots of winding country roads and the rest of the group probably won’t be travelling at his pace, particularly towards the end of the day as he hasn’t had any long distance experience and that will be when we head through the paraparas. I know that many of you think I may not be experienced enough to comment, but I have been riding for many years and since joining KB have seen too many crashes of people pushing themselves past their abilities, you may well think otherwise, but it is still not something I condone.

My main concern is the safety of everyone coming on the ride, and their enjoyment.

trace I back you up on the call.

Eco If you want to come with me on my weekend rides (mostly main roads) it can help get your endurance up.

Already on a sickey today because i don't feel like getting off the truck after 12 hours driving to go straight to the meet up then do a days riding.

I dont even want to think abotu how much this is going to cost in lost earnings. and fuel.

Question what distances are we talking about so i know how much fuel money to set aside. Any recommended amount of cash to bring along?

That's the ticket! I just got home from my last night shift for the week, so i should be good to go tomorrow morning :woohoo:

Map sez about 1100km, so probly do a good 1200 by the time we're back. Sound about right peeps?

should be great - not super sunny so no tar bleeds.

Mild and cloudy suits me down to the ground :niceone:

Yup, possibility of a drizzle or two, but should be a nice cool ride :D

Anyone else excited yet? :woohoo:

I'm excited but I've also got my fingers and toes crossed that the weather will improve somewhat. I don't enjoy riding in the rain that much but sunday looks very promising so I'm hoping the not so good looking weather for Saturday will pass us by very quickly.

yes well the weather is suppose to be clearing and doesn't look too bad at this point, so it will be going ahead at this point... but not sure that everyone should be talking about it, as you may jinks it!

Yep set aside money for petrol (about 1200 km) food and $10 for accommodation.

Im glad you are excited... so be to the meet point on time and fueled up.. so we can brief at 6:45 and take off at 7! We have people to meet along the way, so cant afford to be late from the start! Especially if its a little wet need to take that into consideration of travel speed etc!

See you tomorrow morning (unless the forecast changes drastically... check here for update around 7:30pm)

Tried riding in my leather jacket with a hi-vis raincoat over the top... Fail...
The neck roll was too bulky when i tucked the hood in, couldnt look up properly. Guess i'm in the cordura for the ride, so will be takin it easy

Everyone be on time! I'll be there early itching to go no doubt, heheh :Punk:

hey RM really wants me to come what a dick i think he just hates me and will push me to go beyond my limits some one save me, i don't even have any gear yet.

But seriously he said he will ride with me and turn back if i am not keeping up with the group so we don't bug the rest of you but i think i should be all good, i think i may have made myself sound a bit too newb with my first post. I am sweet with open road stuff (the kaiaua road is my back yard)

will see ya in the morning

Dude... seriously... You have no gear?

It is a long trek on some pretty straight roads and gentle sweepers before we get to any roads that may cause you any problems, but those roads get real unforgiving real quick. Is a LONG way to turn back once we get to them.
I'm not meaning to come across as a dick, and i have nothing against you, but i really dont think this ride is such a good idea for you. And if RM is pushing you to come along, kick him in the balls. If "keeping up with the group" is a concern, or even part of anyones mindset, i would really question if they should be on this ride (not just aimed at yourself here)
We have all seen far too many crashes and close calls recently due to people pushing their endurance limits, or riding beyond their abilities. We really dont want to see any more.

I hope to meet you and ride with you, but somewhere closer to home, and you in riding gear would be much preferred.

he was joking about the gear mate.

I've ridden with him and i know he will be able to complete this ride safely. you will find out tomorrow.

I would not of asked him to come on this ride if i knew he couldn't do it, or compromise others safety.

if you have concerns with his riding tomorrow (after actually seeing him ride and knowing what you are talking about), you can take it up with me. and if we agree we will leave.

i have spoken with trace about this matter and it is sorted.

I may be bit of a dick with my jokes and road speeds, but i know when someone can and cant ride. Ive been on MANY rides with people on there full licenses riding bikes far too powerful for there skill level who i would rate below eco in terms of being able to complete a ride safely.

eco and I will hang out at the back anyways.

It is the unknown that concerns us all i think. And hard to tell when joking in text form sometimes. It may well turn out to be fine, but the last thing we want is to see anyone putting themselves or others in jeopardy for whatever reason

EDIT: If you've sorted with Trace it's all good, i shall hush now :)
