View Full Version : How fast on 1st gear?

EJK
3rd January 2009, 20:58
Read through the gearing thread and came an idea. Well we all know that 14Rs and 1300Rs can do around 160-70kph on first gear right? How about other bikes??

Alright I'll start. My FXR can do around 28kph (Indicated) on the first gear before blowing up.

Hmmm. This is stuff close my heart.

What's the best you can wring out of your Yami in top?

Like yours, mine gets to about 108 at about 11k.

Do you know anyone who might have a 49/50 tooth rear for a YZF?

Does anyone know nyone who has one?

Does anyone know if a 750 rear will fit straight onto a 600?

If yes, (they are compatible) does anyone know anyone who might, or has, said 49/50 tooth sprocket?

Can't say I've ever done it, but I know it pulls 5000rpm at 50kph, so I'd say 100kph flat out!

my mates 2008 yamaha r1 does 162kph in 1st gear and speed cuts at 299kph, pretty stink you cant hit 300kph must be so it meets some law or something, i dont understand why they would not let it get 2 300kph???

Seems most bikes can go 100kph on first gear... So I guess it ain't amazing that a new Chev Corvette can do 106kph in first...

That's the marketing peoples' way of saying the gear box is buggered and you can't change into 2nd...

"... and it does 65mph in first!"

wow i been doing it wrong:argh:originally my custom moped had gearing that when I got a flat i would put the bike in first gear and let it idle and jog beside it save wrecking the tyre. I lowered the gearing to get off the mark a little quicker and the next time I got a flat i could walk while it idled in firs and it was down the bottom of a big hill:2thumbsupfirst gear does about 25kmh from a 48cclifan thats about half flogged to death:whistle:

i know my k4 600 did 125km/h in first hitting rev limiter, with stock gearing, no idea now since i have changed the gearing and what so have you.

I know when they 04 zx10r came out there was raving about being able to do 160km/h in first gear

Most moden sporst bike have race gear boxs, which have very TALL first gears then rest are close ratio

MY NC21 VFR400 does about 75-80 in first.
WAAY different gearing to an NC30, they have a more race type box with a high first and closer ratios after that.
Plus it redlines at 13000 compared to the NC30 14500

But I think around 80k in first.

But it doesn't like sitting 50 and up in first!

When I test rode the ZX14 after they first came out, I bounced it off the limiter at 185kmh in 1st and after that you may as just well snick her into

Generally its done by the manufacturer to allow the bike to take off with more grace than if it was geared for say, 50kph in 1st, which would mean even a tremor on the throttle would make for a messed up take-off (splat)

Ahh because most of the time the big thous etc you are pootling at about 2-3,000 rpm. and have the balls there when you need it.

The VifFerraRi used to do around 238km/h in first, but I can't confirm this figure as it's well over the speed limit, y'know.
I've geared it down heaps for communtering, with a 5-tooth front sprocket and a 52-tooth rear, so I can win the traffic light grand prix and do massive wheelies. Another benefit is the speedo now reads over 350 km/h around town! Woohoo! :scooter:

My workday seems geared WAAAY down too: every second feels like a minute, every minute like an hour, and every hour like sitting in a jumbo from SF to AK.
I hope I can recover enough to not kill myself from residual boredom on the ride home...

Kiwifruit did a top speed flying quater at the Carterton Sprints. The Hayabusa was reading well in excess of 300kmh (i think 320 something) and was trapped at a speed of 295kmh.

7th January 2009, 15:29
Well seeing as zx10's are limited to 299 on the speedo, and I've seen videos of them clearly accelerating after it stops on 299 for quite a while I'm assuming they can get 300 consistently which makes me wonder the point of getting something with almost half a liter more engine size which only tops out at around the same speed when that's the talking point about so many 'busa's and zx14's...

martybabe
7th January 2009, 15:31
I've never even looked, it's hard enough job to keep the front wheel on the ground as it is without looking to see how fast it will go in first.

I do recall an acquaintance of mine that was adamant his car would do 110k in first, I said no way, he said way and proceeded to prove it. I think we made about 80 before his beloved piece of crap car disintegrated spectacularly, smoke oil and little metal bits every where.

Torque, and lots of it. Particularly at lower revs compared to 1000cc sports.

When i dynoed my bike i was told that my speedo is fairly accurate, much more so then they had on a previously tested GSXR1k6.

Busa may have simmular speedo design and therefore it may carry on its large uncertenties.
