View Full Version : Lower triple lock-stop repair?

One of the lock-stops on my lower triple tree has sheared off following an, um....incident.
I can either buy a new lower triple, or try to get the old one repaired.
Does anyone know anyone around Auckland (or anywhere reasonably close North/South) who can do this sort of repar - either welding on a new lug, or building up weld material to replace the stuff that sheared off?

What material is it? The lcok stop doesn't do much. Just, duh, stops the forks swinging. If it's steel any competent welder can weld a wee blob on and shape it up . Alloy, not quite so easy but no big deal. Assuming that there aren't fairing and such in the way.

No fairings - 'tis a speed triple.
I don't actually know what material it is, but I'd guess it's steel with powdercoat over the top.
Point me in the direction of a competent welder?

There's a couple of places in Barry's Point Rd. Or give Death_Inc a PM he knwos welding inside out, I'm sure he'll have a name.

I've got non-standard bars that foul the tank. So I got some JB Weld (just a fancy epoxy glue) and a little nut and made my own lock-stop.
You may want to go a little higher-tech for such a shiny bike, though.

I know guys who have swapped triples and forks from another bike onto their VFRs, and the tabs were then in the wrong place to stop the bars hitting the tank. Easiest fix was to drill and tap some bolts into the lower triple.

Yeah, Honda owner's drool tends to cut right through the clear-coat.

drilling CAN weaken the tripple clamp somthing ferice, esp if its not an old solid one, and one with the the hollow points.
ANY welder can weld a little stop back on - its not a big deal.
the epoxy / jb weld route is a good idea too - DYI, i cant imagine anyone would pick up on it from looking at the bike unless they were looking for it!

Really?
It's great to know there's someone with such a wealth of engineering knowledge on KB. :niceone:
I'd better PM those guys on the other forums I'm on to tell them to replace their triples before they break and they crash and die.

not sure if that's sarcasm or not, but it really depends on the triple clamp.
ones like

with all the hollows on the underside - designed with minimum weight etc if you drill through it - esp one of the cross members you can weaken it a lot.
but its not going to break from normal riding, it'll brake when you hit a big pot hole or drop the front of the bike off a trailer etc.

ED--if ya get stuck Ill sort it for ya
RM--Um dude the stops are usullally on the bottom clamp.
Thank you for the warning -I guess the 4 seasons racing my SV has endured with the same drilled n tapped steering stopps means the clamps gonna fracture at any moment :devil2:
