View Full Version : Motorcycles are dangerous

Bollocks!
All this talk about motorcycles being inherently dangerous just reflects our wimpy modern attitude to life.
Yes, riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than driving a car, which is more dangerous than walking, which is more dangerous than sitting on the couch, which is more dangerous than .... and so on ...
But, on the flip side, riding a motorcycle is safer than climbing Everest, which is safer than Russian roulette, which is safer than skydiving without a parachute which is safer than ... and so on ...
It's all a matter of perspective. Life in NZ today is a LOT safer than it has been at times in the past. On the danger scale of history motorcycling doesn't even rate.

very true
Motorcycles are no more dangerous than a loaded gun, It aint dangerous at all.
Now a person with a loaded gun is a different matter, as is SOME people on a motorcycle.
It is all in the way you use the tool.

You neglected to mention that life has a 100% mortality rate.

with 4m people in NZ and say an avg max age of 80, about 50,000 must be popping off annually (for all reasons but mostly heart disease or cancer apparently) - the road toll has to be a small % of that and bikes are a fraction of that again
but like all statistics it depends what answer was wanted when asking the question, for instance:
aircraft safety statistics are based on per passenger mile, so as planes get bigger and journeys longer they get safer as a matter of course ...

Hmm by that logic doesn't anything we do have a 100% mortality rate, anyway I intend to live forever :Punk:

Of course Motorcycles are dangerous.
If it wasn't dangerous I wouldn't do it.
There's nothing like living dangerously to make one appreciate living...

I beg to differ.
Motorcycles are NOT dangerous.
I have never heard of anyone being attacked by a motorcycle...

Tell that to the children !!!
The child mortality rate is virtually nil. Small families are the norm because we know our offspring are more than likely to survive to become adults.
A few notable cases of child murder have been made into a media circus. Tragic though they are they are isolated cases and not indicative of the population as a whole.

Everything is relative - I believe motorcycles are dangerous.
The laws of Physics and Gravity are immutable so is the biology of human tissue. And so is the potential for stupidity in any large number of people/drivers.
I stop to consider just how dangerous it is regularly and adjust attitudes accordingly.
The benefits outweigh the dangers. Heat - kitchen.

In which case pussycats are more dangerous than motorcycles - I was attacked by a cat once...thought it was "tame"...yeah. right.

I agree with everything you say.
However, there seems to be a perception, even among bikers, that merely hopping on a bike is an act of bravery (or stupidity to some). I think a bike is like any other potentially lethal device - it can be as safe or as dangerous as you make it. A bike is only more dangerous than, say, a car because a higher skill level is required to operate it properly.

I agree with BigDave.
Of course they are dangerous.
They are machines designed to propel the human body at unnatural speeds.
Speeds at which an impact with another static or mobile object is likely to cause serious harm or death.
You can ride as "safely" as you like. You are still riding a dangerous machine in a dangerous environment.
You can be the best rider in the world but it doesn't stop one of the aforementioned "dickheads" killing you accidentally, while on the daily commute.

And the ramifications tend to be greater when they are operated poorly.

This is like saying a carving knife is dangerous because it's designed to cut muscle. Properly used even falling over with one in your hand won't be a problem.
You can be the best rider in the world but it doesn't stop one of the aforementioned "dickheads" killing you accidentally, while on the daily commute.
But what is the probability of this actually happening to any given individual an any given day?

yes. Sorry 'bout that. My outburst was directed at Katman. Which i would think would be fairly obvious if you read through the thread.

Just living in todays society is dangerous enough in itself. If we all worried about motorcycles being dangerous then I guess no of us would own them nor ride them for that matter. Anything with a motor in it is dangerous but if you treat it for what it is and with respect then it only becomes more dangerous thru your lack of respect for it.
Like others have said on here walking across the road can be dangerous, just like rock climbing, skiing, fishing off rocks and so on.
If we all worried about the dangers around us we wouldn't leave our homes and then all live boring and unhappy lives. Who wants that, Not me.:niceone:

as mentioned - 50,000 check out annually from NZ and we're talking about how many who get it on a bike ? Ooo perhaps 50 top whack (no idea what was the worst total ever was but guess no more than 100 or so)
and if you go back 2 generations they were losing tens of millions (admittedly worldwide, but then it was a smaller place too) via war, influenza, pogroms etc etc etc
maybe we should look on the bright side ?

Yep everything is Dangerious, life is terminal. a loaded gun is safe until you pick it up and pull the trigger, traveling at 300kmph is safe until you hit something solid, or break one of the other laws of physics.
It is the constant risk analysis that gets us from, getting up from bed to getting into bed, at the end of our day that we mostly do on auto pilot, through our day, using the knoledge we have about the knowen risks for personal harm to ourselves, that are constantly around us.

You do your bike a serious injustice . It is the bugs that are dangerous. They are evil emissaries of the forces of darkness, they are trying to attack you. If they can they will crawl up your nostrils into your brain and take over your soul. You will become a zombie, devoid of all self worth, reasoning capability or vestiges of humanity. You will in fact become a typical beige Corolla driver.
Your noble Scoot , more intelligent and perceptive than its rider, realises this , and in an act of sublime self sacrifice places itself between you and the evil swarm.

Mmmmm you don't "break" any laws of physics - their application is just a bit more dramatic.

Scoot is all wise, and all knowing. I bow to your wise epiphany, and I will do my best to avoid the biege corolla syndrome... Does it still apply, if heartbroken and bitter, I have no soul? This morning while I fed and watered her, I took a moment to scrape as much bug gut off her snout; once done, I then prayed to the motorcycling Gods for continued velocity without end.
