Lone Kauri Road. Anybody else know about this absolute gem of a road?
I accidentally discovered it out by Karekare Beach off Piha Road while out for a ride this morning and had the absolute time of my life on it.
Some really tight second gear corners and twisty as hell. Nice opening corners as well so you know what's ahead. I was tempted to turn around and head back down it for another go if I wasn't short on gas.
If you haven't already, I suggest next time you're out that way you ride it!

It's pretty well known in the "engine-less" bike community, so some care would be appreciated, it's a fair old climb and I don't travel quickly up it.
Thanking you in advance etc.

Yeah, I cycle the Kare Kare / Lone Kauri loop and also do it on my motorbike when the mood takes me out that way.
Either way its a great road - but remember its not a race track and around a tight corner you might find a cyclist, stopped car or a road slip - I've (almost) run into all three ... (even as a cyclist ...)

I would say it was built for something like your NSR?

Not enough torque, and oncoming traffic.

I used to really enjoy whipping up the RG150 round that road - no torque at all - but great workout for the gears, revs and flicking the bike about.
Have to say its not much fun on the gutsy but lardy GSXF - I do the slow cruise up it now on that and just enjoy pottling for the scenery (probably doing the same speed as on the RG but just feels as though its slow ...)

It's a little bit tight in spots.
The best bit is the first entry on the piha road on the way out. There is no driveways for about 2.5kms then theres some letter boxes on the right after that there is driveways etc. Good at night coz you can see the headlights before you get a surprise.
Used to do a bit of drifting (cars) out there on the weeknights if it was raining and windy. Nobody would come down that road. From the main road to the letter boxes and back. As we found the runoff was not the best in a car so I would imagine an off on a bike would hurt.
Best thing is much less possums than the coromandel roads.
