Oil filter @ 6,000km?

Just a quick question here.

If you took your bike in for its 6000km service, would you have expected the oil filter to be changed, and not just the oil?

For a 6000 km service? Definitely. The engine is still just getting through its running in period. The 12000 km service could probably get by with just an oil change.

What ever the service schedule says - most likely not as standard, would have been changed at 1,000km and then not again until 12,000

The schedule for my R1 says change Oil Filter Cartridge at 1,000kms then not again until 20,000kms and only recommends Oil Changes every 10,000kms

Of course I'll be ignoring that and asking the mechanic to change Oil every 5,000 and filter every 10,000km

If it is for the SV the manual might say

OIL - 1000 / 6000 / 12000 / 24000 kms

FILTER - 1000 / 12000 / 24000 kms

I changed the oil and filter every 4000 kms in the TL1000.
In the DR650 here because of the heat and being air cooled i change it every 2000 kms,filter every other oil change.
Oil and filters are cheap,a shop will follow the service manual unless told otherwise (probably)

Oils is cheap and a filter cheaper so I would not be too worried about having it changed at every oil change of 5000K.

I will definately be making sure a new filter goes in each oil change from now on. Thought they would change it, but wasn't sure of the filter schedule.

5k always a good time to do oil and filter. Doesn't do any harm, less wear on engine with the some fresh liquid love in the engine.

on my old xj use to change oil every 5000 with new filter (was recommended in manual 10 000) but at the time I was doing real high k's on it..

Any Triumph has ten thousand kay service intervals. Oil and filter.

If you check the owners manual, most of the late model Jap bikes will have oil/filter change intervals at 10-12,000 kms.

However the shop will tell you to service it every 6,000 (as they did with my Hornet, and the book says 12k). Out of interest, I questioned this and I was told to meet the warranty requirements the bike requires regular servicing as per the manual.

Personally I keep having it done at 6,000 anyway (do my own when out of warranty) and they can do the valves at 24,000.

On a new bike if the oil is being done at 5-6k then the filter at every second oil change will be fine. No problems on your SV here.
I've been getting my filter's back and chopping them open for inspection (anal, but just interesting). It appears that so far I have been wasting money on new filters as they are spotless!!!!!!!

Yeah but being a Suzuki in 18,000 you probably topped it up with 8 liters of oil over that period, so it was really getting a drip-feed of fresh oil.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Close, but I never actually expected it to last 18000. Just thought I'd keep going till I wrecked it. Never did....:(

weekend thrasher (tl1000r) every 6,500 kms which is a longer interval then most but I use a good oil and fram filters so confident.

Daily (hayabusa) every 4000kms to get rid of the gunk. never hurts to do it too often. use a lighter oil (more cold starts) thus it deteriorates quicker.

My 92 CBR900 which Ive owned from new has had oil change every 2000k and filter every 4000k, shes clocked up 170,000k and still going strong.
