In principle, it's possible that the ability to become a good driver is an inheritable characteristic, but generally I'd say "No".
As for that ad - it SUCKS. Once again, they've shown someone driving very well, and crashing for no apparent reason (like the other ad with the Falcadore in it).
Slow down? In the earlier parts of the ad, he was nowhere near the limits of traction (there was no squealing of tyres, no lurching on the suspension, no running wide, no oversteeer, etc etc)
Did he crash because he was driving too fast, or because of inattention (perhaps his partner had her head in his lap?), or being a dumbarse, or just because his lumbering piece of Ozzie iron was crap?

...or because of inability? Have you seen some of the drivers out there who managed to get a license?
I don't think speed kills, lack of education does.

Actually, in that ad, it was because he turned the ABS off, and braked hard in a corner, and ran over the ramp they'd set up to make the car roll (and piss Ford NZ off!)
In other words he (and/or the ad maker) was a dumbarse.
If they're going to make these ads, they need to make them factually correct, and perhaps they'd be better to say, "Don't be a dumbarse! If you're a crap driver but think you're shit-hot, it's better to shoot yourself than use the public roads asa racetrack!"
Trouble is, we're ALL fantastic drivers (or at least "better than average"), eh?

Whats that got to do with the price of rice. Oh backing a trailer is a sore point for me. I can back a trailer fine, accurate and with only using my mirrors. I get abit shity people assuming i cant back a trailer.
My dad made us kids learn how to drive in a paddock basher..in the paddock. And made us back a trailer as well. I learnt how to drive, back a trailer...and rebuid fences.
Driving in the blood? no..its exposure to it for the most part. If you have family into it..chances are you will be to.

I've just completed a survey on a series of driver safety/car safety ads on tv and this was one of them. I said it was a pathetic ad and I hated it! Likewise the tosser who is ticketed for speeding on the way to his kid's sports game and then has to drive THROUGH an accident scene on the way home, complete with fire, police and ambulance still in attendance! When was the last time the cops let any vehicles drive through a crash scene like this?
It's like all the ads for side airbags - sure, they probably help, but it doesn't mean you can drive like a moron and escape injury!

Nah, another "nature vs. nurture" question. I reckon driving habits are picked up from who you learn from. I drive parly like my dad, who taught me to drive, and partly like my father in law, who I've driven with for 10 years more recently (he taught me how to heel-toe properly).
I reckon an adopted kid will drive like his adoptive parents. Like so many other things, you're influenced by what you see, you follow the example you are given from your role models.
Driving fast isn't the problem, driving faster than you can handle, or your vehicle can handle (in both cases taking the conditions into account) is the problem. Then again, so is being a dickhead show-off.
This is FAR too serious for a friday arvo though...

I have no doubt you can back a bloody trailer, what I like about the comment I made is that, it gets a response everytime I post it. Males dont get offended if its pointed out that they cant back a trailer, I would suspect not every male can. Its a genda thing.

Have a look at the skidmarks on the road. For some reason the cage must have suddenly and mysteriously jumped to the left (& then a step to the right?) and inverted onto its roof before stopping instantly.
Fuck speed. That advert proves that aliens have landed and are now throwing cages off of the road with gay abandon and complete disregard for physics. (NOT Honda type "ghey abandon" either...).

Yeah, that ad's a pet peeve of mine as well (actually - they all are!)
I object particularly to the fact his speedo indicated a shade under 110km/h. Assuming the normal ~5% optimism of speedos, that meant he was actually traveling at no more than about 105km/h. So, he would be unlikely to be ticketed for that. Furthermore, the cop's comment "That's where a lot of the accidents are happening" is pretty crappy. A car crash at 110 on a STRAIGHT piece of road? Obvioulsy, speed was a minor factor - something like inattention, a sudden attack of stupidity, or having to avoid a pillock over the centreline is more likely.
What bugs me about ALL these ads is they're an insult to our intelligence. And those of us that don't have any, won't pay attention to them anyway.
These are obvioulsy funded from the "Education" part of the the 3Es expenditure (Engineering, Enforcement, Education). Why not have some REAL education, instead of fookin blatant propaganda and misinformation?
Like, what flush medians are for (seeing most people don't seem to know)?
Or re-iterating some basics like indicating lane changes, stopping at stop signs and orange or red lights, giving way at intersections, safe following distances, etc etc. seeing as most motorists seem to be blithely unaware of those basics too.

OMG YES!!!!
And here's another one - When driving onto the motorway via an on ramp - make every effort to increase your speed to match that with which the traffic you are looking to join is travelling.

My riding is in my Balls.
And what Vifferman said, these ad's are retarded. If most of the crashes are happening around that speed, it's because most people drive at around that speed. Crap drivers can crash at any speed.
Check this crash, happened at automatic idle speed. Now thats talent.

I think there aren't enough of these ads on tv. I am wondering if anyone else has seen that ad encouraging people to watch their following distance?? I can't remember who has made it but its not public service ad, I think its made by "supercheap autos" or something like that. Theres 2, one ad describes the 2 second rule and another ad shows the 4 second rule in wet conditions. I was SO Stoked when I saw those ads ! people following me too close happens to be one of my biggest pet hates...... unfortunately I only saw those ads a couple of times and haven't seen them since.
mattian
9th January 2009, 16:54
I have just read some of the previous posts about those "speed" ads and I do agree that people who speed do so, because they want to and for some people no amount of advertising is going to make them change their behaviour however, I do think that when it comes to something like following distance. Alot of people are just ignorant about what is a safe distance to be following someone. They just don't have a clue!! I think if those ads force some people to consider it thats got to be a good thing.

Heaven help me, I am going to attempt to answer the OP on topic  :sunny:
Though, the OP question does not mention good/bad driving so..
This is double/double edged sword
I dont think driving is in your blood. It is a skill that you develop over time. Any fool can learn to drive/ride, that is proven every single day I get on the road. However, blood does play a part in this I am certain
Good drivers have to have sharp eyes, fast reflexes, an ability to think ahead and anticipate problems, or stating the obvious here a reasonable intelligence level. These qualities come from genetics, ergo they are in your blood.
However, if you want to take it further, if you show any talent in your ability to drive/ride in a race sense, you better hope it is in your bloodline, or you will live on scraps, until you can convince a stranger to support you :done:

Driving may not be in the blood, but it certainly helps to have parents who are good drivers. Many car and motorcycle racers have successful offspring in the same sport....Valentino Rossi for example. But that is more the result of opportunity than inheriting talent.
And it is also not a result of instruction or training, although it is a great help to anyone. Some people just happen to be ''naturals'' - they can jump on a bike, into a car,truck,digger...whatever,and just have it sorted right away.Comes from nothing but how their brains are wired.
You can see it happen right before your eyes in your own family. Both my daughters are good drivers of course. One was a professional driver, with a good record...but she reacts to situations rather than anticipates them.My other daughter is the opposite, although she made a big fuss about learning to drive, she is a natural. She is alert to what is going on around her,and anticipates the actions of others. It's not in their blood, and it's not how they were taught - they have different personalities, and their brains are wired in different ways.

9th January 2009, 21:24
A grotesquely bad ad as is the even worse radio ad rendition. It sounds like bad dads deserve hellfire and brimstone.
Nothing bout skill or appropriate speed. Re Motus daughters differing styles I knew a top road safety guy who strongly advocated talk driving which is good for those with less environment attunement. It involves learners verbalising what they see of their surroundings as theyscan while they drive. It gets the frontal lobe which is deficient in under 25s running better as I understand it.
The main thing I take from that ad is that men are stupid, women know best but are truly wimpy and won't take the wheel or stand up to dicks. There is no positive example set - because they just want to curry more support for tickets by villifying those over the limit. Oh yes - and now we know aliens kill speeders, a big help.
Also in real life if your relly drives bad you usually learn from that not emulate it. My Aunt sat license 3 x then my grandad bribed cop to give it back in the day. She was a scary driver but her kids are all good. Again they invent theories about attitude transmission with no specific evidence. These ads kill by wasting money that could be more sanely spent

Is the "Asian" reputation for driving deserved?
Every community seems to have the need to bag some sub set of the communty (look at KB!). Why should the driving community be any different? In the UK it is Asian drivers (Indian, Pakistani, Bengali, Sri Lankan etc.) rather than Oriental drivers (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indonesian, Korean etc.) that are deemed the ones to watch out for.
Me? I never had an accident in the UK. I have been T boned twice in Auckland in as many years while going through a green light - once by a Maori and once by a Tongan. Go figure. Never had a problem with the Orientals at all.
Asian rep is not deserved in my opinion. White people driving Holdens however are a menace to society.
