Just took my mates NSR for a blast around surburbia.... half way up the road and realised that his speedo wasnt working, when i got back i asked him about it, he said he took out the cable so that way he dosnt clock up k's on the odometer, how many other people out there do this?

NOt many I would hope - apart from anything else it is not a nice thing to do the the next buyer. I bet your mate would be pissed if he found his speedo either wound back or disconnected when he brought a bike or car.
Also a cop pulling his for speeding wont accept no cable as an excuse ans he will not be able to argue he was not doing the speed alleged
With no speedo cable the bike is not warrent of fitness compliant and can be put off the road, prob not the first time but caught by the same cop twice.........

oh yeah forgot - pretty hard to work out when the next 5000k service is due - so it is likely to come back and bite him in the bum.

Many Diesels do this in NZ to avoid RUC.

big fines if you get caught doing that.
When Diesel car and van drivers get a new WOF there is a section on the bottom sheet of the wof sheet that the tester ticks that says is vehicle a diesel. (it is not on top sheet)
if ticked yes they check to see is there current RUC paid up - if it is not they check back to when last paid, Can be owners before you, as diesel owners are liable when buying diesel vehicle to see that RUC is current. THey can can them come and knock on door and present you with bill for many dollars.

$400 fine fine driving a vehicle without up to date RUC - plus you also have to pay the bill on all outstanding RUC - big fines if you have been slack....

The fine for the RUC is the overdue amount times three, up to a maximum of $2500.
I know because we've been hit with it before.
F#@kin expensive.
