G'Day All,
I'm looking at buying an '84 SRX 250. Its priced around about AUD$350. Its running and seems to be roadworthy, just needs rego. Just after other peoples experience with them - mostly the engine side of things (reliable? fuel economy?). Also just general rideability (Handling, 110kmph Cruising OK?).
Also After a Workshop Manual for one as well.
Cheers
Jono

I don't know how much bikes are worth across the ditch, but that sounds ridiculously cheap, especially if it's road legal and just needs rego.

Yeah,
I also forgot to add that the bike has 76,000km on the clock. Should I be worried about this??

That depends. I've seen bikes with less than half those k's that rattle like crazy.
If you're not very mechanically inclined, get a mate to look it over for you or something. Those are pretty high k's, but it's a very simple engine and if it's been maintained it should be sweet. Ive seen a GN that was running sweet at 90,000K, and a SRX that was fucked at 30,000.
Edit: At $350 I don't think you can go wrong either. Even if it fucks out completely you could sell it to the wreckers to get a fair chunk of that back.

I think im fairly mechanically minded, I've redone heads on Falcons and things like that, so a single cylinder shouldnt be too hard.. The other thing is it could have already been rebuilt at some stage back in the day.

I'm not excatly sure what sort of things could go wrong, but the last one I checked out had a horrible rattle in it even after it was warmed up. The guy wanted $2500 for it
Just give it a good test ride, listen for any wierd knocks or rattles, I guess there's not much you can do beyond that.

Splendid little bikes. Enormous fun . I really miss mine.
Very economical, I got over 80mpg. Top speed is a bit variable, they are heavily overgeared so normally top speed will be reached in 5th , not 6th. Around 140, 150 depending on your weight, wind etc. I did see 170kph downhill (still not to the red line in 6th). Cruising at 110kph is fine, normal maximum cruising is around 120 - 130.
Very reliable, nothing much goes wrong . Rattle is most likely cam chain, expect to have to replace it sometime around 70-90000 k, but its an easy fix, don't need to remove motor or head. Electrics on old Yamaha generally can be a bit flakey. Exhausts seem to rot a bit. Other than that, solid as.

Thanks for that Ixion.
I read in another thread that you had a workshop manual for one of them?
Is this still the case??

So does anyone have a service manual?
